  1. was asking the same thing. i think we can ask our CNAs to remove foley but not insert and NO to IV starts!
  2. doc was an idiot. glad ur ok
  3. haven't had that kind of experience .. but we had our secretary admitted to our floor, so he is kind of family .. he has cardiac issues so he has to go to our floor .. he needed a foley and he asked who were on the floor and chose who he would want to do it ... almost all of us would not want to do the foley to the guy we see everyday taking care of doctor's orders and answering the phone .... i don't know about the husband of one of our nurses ... but i guess, we are all professional ... its part of the job.

What was your experience(s) with your preceptor(s) like? Excellent 9. In your opinion was your training period long enough? Yes 10. Did you experience “Reality Shock”as a new nurse? Yes 11. Please describe in a few sentences what your first few weeks/months were like: called a code (blue) on the first night of orientation 12. What would you recommend, or what advice would you give to new nurses? listen to seasoned nurses; you will find the good and bad of ur first job, take both of them and learn from them; the one's who want to eat new grads u can ignore them and make sure u won't be like them; there are many dumb doctors, scary!; learn to listen to patients and their families, patients first; u won't know everything, learn as you go, u learn new things everyday of work; nursing can be fun and very rewarding.
  5. I got few on my floor who works as NPs full time (other place) and then per diem RN on weekends! I don't know why they need that much money but they are doing it! One just graduated and passed the exam but she is waiting for the right NP job she said =)
  6. I work at a step-down unit. 1:3 is our ratio, if we get a 4th patient, that patient is totally ignored!
  7. nservice, I would like to receive a copy of your lecture as well.
  8. I was wondering about this. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and an opportunity for an 8-5 job is something to think about with higher pay and a different resume after a year or 2. Would you choose to sacrifice 2 years to do an 8-5 job (it can also be 7-4 if i want to) or keep the bedside 3x a week? Or should I wait for how many more years before I try an office job? I don't plan on having more children. My husband works at home and when he is needed in his office he goes for only about a maximum of half day. That might not be the case in the coming years. What do you think? You can also direct me to another thread that can answer my question. Appreciate it a lot.
  9. difficult .. had a patient waiting for lung transplant, dnr/dni ... watched her go flatline in few minutes ... we were just around her bed waiting for that last beat ... one family member present.
  10. been on tele/stepdown for 6 years ... my first year was overwhelming but it gets better ... but like the others said if you really are not happy look for something else ... what is great about nursing is that you don't need to be stuck in one place .. you can explore and you can find where you can be happy.
  11. I like my pt's environment clean .. I don't mind wiping their bedside tables or their sinks. we have private rooms so I think they are easier to maintain. we do have housekeeping .. but if the trash is really full and I am annoyed that I cannot trash more things in it and IF I can do it .. I just take the bag out, tie it and put a new bag in and then wash my hands!!! and then remind housekeeping that they need to do these things. and sometimes you just can't wait for them to do their rounds and the trash in medrooms are not really that dirty ... I won't dare to do the bathroom!
  12. I have a toddler with type 1 diabetes. we surely reuse lancets because we forget its time to change them (we use aviva multiclix)
  13. My wedding was Feb and my graduation was May ... I had a very good planner and did not have more than 75 guests ... it can be done. Best wishes!
