I too have lost my compassion. I started working at a new hospital because my crew at my other job left. This new place states that it is cutting edge ,but not from a nursing standpoint. I don't feel like I am able to practice to my full capabilities and I work in critical care. It is too the point I feel unsafe practicing there. Orientation was a joke and I think as for the posting of the job, it should have just stated warm body needed. I am waxing and waning on quitting, but I have nothing else lined up. I am applying to other jobs that are non bedside nursing because I have an advanced degree, that is non nursing.

I feel like I am putting my nursing license that I worked hard to earn working in critical care and having to have a 3 patient assignment in an ICU. How is this safe? Family members and patients are so needy and heaven forbid you don't get to their call bell right away. There are family members who will follow a nurse into another patient's room to get their attention. You put your foot down and set limits and they complain. It is to the point you lose the compassion of of wanting to help and care for the sick.

It seems like the more one tries to stay away from negative co-workers the more they flock to you. I hate a majority of my co-workers. Some of them feel entitled because they have been there so long. The unit I work on is very clicky. I thought I was hired to work, not be around caddy,backstabbers, throw under the bus, run to the manager, think they know it all, and lazy people.

Bedside nursing seems to be getting worse by each second. I transferred to a critical care unit thinking I will be able to gain more skills and learn more things only to realize the crap that nurses have to deal with are taken to the nth power in the critical care unit. The egos of the doctors, PAs, and even the other nursing staff is ridiculous. We are suppose to be a team, that word is a JOKE in healthcare. I feel like an army of one.The lack of respect from other staff members I really can't take it. I have just had it. Yet I am suppose do my job with a smile on my face for good show. Well to hell with that mess. Yet the floor wonders why so many people are leaving and going else where. I am just biding my time and when the opportunity peaks it head out , i will take it and run!!!!

LocaW8ta, how did you get into research nursing, and do you have an advance nursing degree to do it?

I am so glad this a thread on this website because I know exactly how RN1023 feels. I have had enough of all it . I am just biding my time until I can leave bedside nursing. Patients think we are their servants and doctors are bad at communicating with anyone that is not a doctor. most of the time they are wrapped up in their own egos to recognize that they work with other staff members. I have had doctors think I am the CNA, echo tech, physical therapist, and everything else, but my real job position , A RN. I am sick and tired of having to tell doctors about labs and vital signs that they should be monitoring. one doctor i encountered was so wrapped up in his world that he gave a verbal order to a student nurse, and when I told him, his response was , "I assumed she was the nurse because she was in the room and wearing scrubs." Other health care workers call doctors " Dr. ( insert last name), but yet they call us by our first name . We as nurses worked hard for our license as well, but yet no one calls us Nurse ( insert last name). I will not drop what I am doing to help you find a chart that was no put back in the right place by one of your fellow doctors, I don't care how long you are on hold when you call and ask to speak to me about a patient when I am busy in another patient's room. My time is just as valuable and precious as you doctors think yours is. I HAVE HAD ENOUGH !!!!

I so agree with you blondebabe0625. It is a slap in the face because the mission statement talks a good talk ,but is not being carried out. Doesn't the mission stations look nice on facility letter head and plaques throughout the facility and if one works where I work, on one's badge. It just makes me want to scream!!!!

Thank you for posting this post. This sort of thing happens on a regular basis and I have had it. When I have had a doctor yell at me for something beyond my control, I have pulled them to the side and confronted them. It sad that nurses can be treated any old way by doctors, other nurses, and other hospital, and even patients and their family members to the point it has become part of our job description that is like an unwritten rule. I don't know about anyone else, but I stand up for myself. We all have bad days at work ,but that doesn't give anyone the right to talk to us as they please. What is even sadder is that we truly have no one we can truly talk to about it who has our backs. That is why I don't feel bad confronting any doctor or other person who is disrespectful to me. You want to report me to my manager go ahead, my manager doesn't support me or give me lame excuses as such listed in the post, I will be making a call to HR and make sure I document !!!!!!! Having doctors and others in the hospital treat us like crap is not part of a NURSES JOB!!!! and I am so tired of having people make it seem like it is.

People are always talking about evidence in the health care field, well there is the evidence. I guess many health facilities have yet to learn about this article or are just playing blind to it. Thanks again for posting this.

I would just be happy to see doctor's and other hospital staff WASH THEIR HANDS with SOAP & WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is amazing how many infectious diseases can be prevented with proper hand hygiene. I'm just saying.

I am fed up with a lot of things and yes poor management is one of them. I work on a unit where the nurse manager likes to micormanange and many are tired of it. I am fed up with staff who are still working on the unit and clearly the unit is too fast paced for them to handle and many worker have complained about it to the nurse manager. I'm tired of getting pulled aside by management for something the doctor should have done and I missed it, so it counts aganist the unit when audits are done. I'm tired of management standing up for the doctors who because of what they didn't do, the unit gets dinged for a miss on something. The crap that comes out of managment's mouth about particular doctors being good at certain things, but yet the doctor is not being pulled into an office to discuss what they should have done or better yet even being notified at all. I am a human being who is a RN. SORRY I CAN'T ALWAYS REMEMBER FOR THE MD HOW TO DO THEIR JOB FOR THEM WHEN THEY CAN'T REMEMBER. I'M BUSY TOO DOING MY JOB ALONG WITH THE OTHER PEOPLES JOBS: cna, casemanagement, physical therapy, secratary, monitor tech, occupational therapist, security, house keeping, etc, the list is endless. SORRY THAT I CAN'T MANAGE TO REMEMBER HOW TO DO ANOTHER HEALTH PROFESSIONALS JOB ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!

I so agree with your post about managers. Just because someone has a MSN doesn't make them management material. I am currently suffering through this situation now. The current manager is driving the staff crazy with all the foolishness. I'm sorry, you just can't wing it in healthcare in any position. We are dealing with people's lives.All my manager seems to care about is how good the unit looks on paper to the uppermanagement mangers to report to. clearly anything or anyone can look good on paper, but once one digs further can see the truth about what is going on. I just avoid my mananger as much as possible, i only speak to the manager on a need to basis.

It all depends on how you look at it. If you think you are trapped, then you are. I have a bachelor's in a science and now going for my BSN, because of what I thought I wanted to do required it. Well I'm working as a nurse and am looking to leave the bedside nursing. At times I think what a waste of time and money, but then I dig deep and look to where I want to be. I know the path isn't easy breezy, but I view the education that i have obtained and will continue to obtain as steeping stones.
