This is definitely a hard situation, and as you point out, its becoming the norm more and more. Every facility handles it differently, from my experience.

NICU all the way. I am in favor for doing what you love. I chose to complete my practicum in a level III NICU and the closest one to my school is 1.5 hours away, and I love it!!! It's a pain to have to wake up at 4:30am to be at my site by 7am, however it is well worth it in my opinion.

I chose NICU because of a shadowing experience I did in a level IV NICU. A baby actually passed the day I was there, but it was amazing to see the level of care from the nurse I was shadowing and the other nurses on the unit. They all rallied around the parents and this child until the very end. She had a long, hard struggle and finally went to rest, but it was just an amazing experience in more ways than one.

I am in the same boat as you, I think it just depends on the hospital, you already have peds experience though, so I think that is a big plus!! Good luck!

I would love to get more information about the place that you work for, it sounds amazing and very rare in today's present climate. I am completing my practicum at a level III NICU with 168 hours and I hope that this gives me an edge in obtaining a job. I also want to get NRP before I graduate but there is a lack of offered classes here, so I am not sure if I will be able to get it. Thanks so much in advance, this site is extremely helpful and I am going to upgrade my membership right now so I can PM people in the future!!

Steve, I've seen you've posted many times here on allnurses and I would like some advice on how, as a new grad in August, to land a position in a level III NICU. I went to school in Georgia, but I am willing to relocate anywhere and when I say anywhere, I mean it! Thanks so much.
