I'm sure a lot more people would leave nursing if they weren't buried in debt. See it all to often. New nurse, excited to be in their new position, goes out and buys a new car, new house, and other big ticket items. Great! If that makes you happy. But how many hours are they going to have to work to pay it off? Moral of this story, don't go in debt. VT247

If you're to lazy to clean up after yourself, don't get mad when I do it for you. Case in point. Every day I'd come into work, the break room was a mess from the last shift. Food, drinks, perfume, nail polish, phone cords, you name it, it was thrown everywhere. Tell them to clean it up. They never did and would leave what they didn't take in a stinking cluttered disaster. So finally I'd had enough. "I'm going to clean as soon as I get here, so it'd better be clean or else it's all getting thrown away" No one listened, it was the same. So, EVERYTHING got tossed in the trash. No name, no date, TRASH! Oh they HATED me for that! But on a positive note things did improve. My favorite piece of clutter is the cell phone. Everyone knows they are NOT supposed to have their cell phone out during working hours. Find one, put a note on it saying "found at nurses station", then slide it under the Nursing Supervisors door. Someone who calls off work after already being 20 minutes late. A coworker that sits behind the desk on their tablet but doesn't answer the phone. A person who isn't afraid to take the last copy or supply without making copies or resupplying. A brave soul who has no brain to mouth filter. Ideally that person will be late from their lunch break by 20-30 minutes routinely. This person should also never clean up after themselves or anyone else, ever. Insanely irate behaviour with profound cussing. Foul odor is a must. Should always borrow things and not return them. Treats everyone equally bad. A horribly wretched vile human being capable of destroying anyone in their path.

DON'T DO IT! Wish someone had told me this before I went through with it. You will hate it. Become a CNA, HHA or tech first and do that for 6-8 months @40hrs a week. Observe the nurses you work with. They look happy? After the 6-8 month trial run are you happy? Hope this message doesn't fall on deaf ears. VT247

Where I am now, it's management for sure. Get out on time and get all your work done is the rhetoric from management. To many people to take care of (like 20+) and not enough people scheduled to work. Management decides we don't need that much help scheduled. Works out great when someone calls off too (like everyday on every shift) which equates to even less help. Oh, and by the way, here's more work we need you to get done. Sorry ya lazy sonsabiotches, I'm gonna get all my work done THEN clock out. Don't like it, then come and help us on the floor. What's that? You're not gonna help? Then shut up and get out my face! If I have admits, /\ in condition, orders coming out my orifice, or any of a 1k other incidents that seems to happen, I'm finishing up my work before I go home. No dumping allowed. But before I sit down to do that mountain of paperwork, the people are going to be taken care of. Swear I'm not a bitter person, but dayum. It's dayumed it ya do and dayumed if ya don't! Honestly, I never had any real desire to become a nurse. Shame on me, yes I know. Just wanted another way to earn a living. That make me a bad person? I don't believe so. Made a logical decision at the time to go through the program. Took 9 months after graduation to take the NCLEX, last in the class. However, everyday the people I'm assigned to are cared for to the best of my ability. Not having the "calling" does not make a person a less compasionate nurse. It sure changed my life. Recently /\ 'd jobs. Previous place was a mess. Fentanyl patches coming up missing, short staffed, smelled awful, state in the building 3 times since November, APS called in, poor general health of the entire population, orders not being written, no signatures in nearly 1/2 of the tx book and a lot on the Mar, Oxycontin taken out of cards and B/P medication replaced with (looked similar), Vicodin and Percocet missing from the EDK, meds signed out when the person is LOA....... So, I quit after 3 months. Tried to tell me, 'We'll correct the problem, come back we need you.' Nope, to little to late. VT247 (Run Forest! RUN!)

I'll probably go back and get my RN. Been a LPN for 4+ years now. Definitely will need a break before school though. Go back and drive a Semi tractor trailer for a few months to clear my mind on the open road. Working in LTC can make a sane person insane. VT247

You're right. I gotta get outta there! Oh, and about the paperwork.... Of course the nurses station has charts, unfinished orders, labs, assessments, etc all over the desk. It's Christmas everyday 'cause I 'unwrap' the desk every evening. Frustration is.... Going to work and your short 2 nurses (usually 4) and 3 CNAs (Minumum 5 / typically 6). Best part is day shift has known about it for HOURS and have called no one. Of course no ones gonna stay .... Having to count narcs after the narc thief has been on that cart. Everyone knows who but management won't terminate them, being friends and all. The other evening nurse and I re-count even after the first count. Check patches upon coming in and immediately after days leave. Better hope I don't catch them ridin' dirty because I won't stop tell they're in PRISON. Just looking at the desk, knowing there is 2 hours + of left overs from the previous shift needing finished. Oh, and by the way, can you do this TX, call this family about....., set up this appt. and make transport. 'Been real busy'.....right, yea.... Busy smoking outside, talking with friends on staff all shift, hiding out in rooms watching TV. Uh-huh, I've worked with them before when they've been 'busy'.:argue: Walking into a room and a resident is seriously ill and should be in the hospital. They're on the floor, 72 hr IR to start the shift. Looks and smells like that person hasn't been changed since they were got up on nights. Why do I do a walk through..? *Sigh* VT247

Oh the joy of going to work everyday. Been at my new facility long enough to understand how things operate. Every other day it's plagued with inadequate staffing. Narcotics missing and patches gone. Part (or all) of management's is either in on it or knows who and won't do anything. All places have their problems, but I'm not sticking around to find out what happens next. What to do.... VT247
