At the nursing home i worked at as a cna if you called in on the weekend then you had to work an extra shift the next weekend. But we were always short staffed anyway and call ins made it worse. I got yelled at for having so much overtime because they didnt want to pay it, then just not even an hour later was asked to work two doubles on my weekend off. That's 32 hours of overtime that they would have to pay. I was never offered a day off because i came in on mine or stayed an extra shift. Every place has different policies and honestly most of them suck.
  2. My mom used to faint at the sight of blood. She went on to be a successful nurse. I think that if you want it enough you will be able to get over it and do well.
  3. I started on the 5th. I am starting to feel overwhelmed already, I just keep trying to keep the end goal in mind. It doesnt help that the bookstore didnt have like half of our books in and still doesnt.
  4. That is ridiculous. In our facility the dining staff brings out a cart. The cna serves the food, puts the trays back on the cart, and cleans up. Dining comes and takes the tray back.
  5. I'm a cna in ltc. We used to have a family that would come in everyday and write down every move that we made and thing that we said. They would complain about everything. I would always make sure that someone else- lpn or cna- was in the room with me in case the family made a complaint. That way i had a witness that i did nothing wrong. Family members can make our job very difficult, just be sure to treat the resident like any other regardless of the family.
  6. If I remember correctly, I needed scrubs, plain white shoes, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and a gait belt.
  7. I recieved my certificate about 2 months after i passed the test. The night I passed I was given paperwork to show that i was certified and used that to immediately get a job.
  8. It happens. A few in my class did so poorly on the written test that they didn't even make it to the clinical portion. The skills that i had to do were feeding, showering, dressing. If you have ever showered a combative resident with alzheimers you know how difficult it was. Just go slow and think before you do. You will do great.
  9. I, too, have learned to be a better aid from reading some of these posts. Most of it is common sense that you should take care of your residents and help your nurses but some aids are just there for the paycheck and don't care. When i see something needs done i do it. I'm another one who is sickeningly cheerful and so upbeat that it drives some of my coworkers crazy when i come in and work the night shift. At my facility I don't get to choose which residents to get. But i can get the grumpy, uncooperative, and very combative ones with little to no problems. I treat my residents like people, not a task, and they appreciate that because many of the other aids do not. I have come in for the night shift and found so many residents soaking through even their linens because the aid didnt want to deal with the grumpiness or combativeness- There is NO excuse for that. Keep up the good work, you sound like an Amazing aid and someone that i would love to have as a coworker.
  10. Everything shows up on black. At the nursing home my residents would spit/throw food on me and when i transfered them I would get old people flakes all over me. After 16 hours everything was on them.
  11. I love the Gold Bond with shea butter. It makes my hands feel great!
  12. I too have heard the rumors about HCA. I have a friend who was hired on at an HCA hospital and she loves it.
  13. My goal is also to become an RN. I think starting as a CNA is a very wise thing. At my job in LTC you can tell the nurses who started as CNA's from the one's that weren't. They are much more willing to help. It's a tough career but also very rewarding. I love going to work and spending time with my residents.
  14. I live in Mo and make $9.50 for nights.
