In-service for PACU nurses?
Hello everyone, Good afternoon. I want to know from PACU nurses the type of in-services classes you have in your facility? What are the topics that you think need to be included in an inservice series for PACU nurses? If you are a PACU educator, what are the topics/contents you have in your classes? Any information is highly appreciated. Thanks, Xigris

New to teaching pharmacology
I'm glad you mentioned this. I see nursing students doing clinicals in my hospital and I am very surprise at the levels pharmacology is taught in school. I agree that most are below average in terms of pharmacokinetics. I have listened to some of the lectures and noticed that it is mostly "basic" and dosages and generic names etc. Would it be great if one talks about cellular effects, mechanism on how Digixon cause its positive inotropic effects not " oh dont give it if heart rate is 60 ". I think students will be able to think critically if pharm is taught in that level. I asked an RN last night on why we use Cytotec and the answer was 'we want to induce labor'... well yeah but why, how? Anyway just venting....

seeking online teaching job
I have the same dilemma as you have. I want to teach online BSN courses. I would say I have expertise in Pharmacology and Physiology as well as Critical Care however, I am having hard time finding one. I have looked into the U of P but now nursing faculty open. I also looked at Chamberlain Nursing. I guess I am asking help/preceptors from on line professors/teachers to show me the way. I have extensive training a total of 20 years. I have Masters of Science in Nurse Anesthesia ( MSNA ) and currently finishing my Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice. I want to teach on line courses for nursing part-time. Thank you for any inputs.

The best male field
2025 as mentioned by previous poster. There are 2 DNAP programs (VCU and Wesleyan) and one DMPNA (West Virginia). A few DNPs (TCU,U of Pitsburg). visit http://www.aana.com and look for accredited programs so far there are 108 and growing... Each school has different admission criteria... and yes, it is very competitive.

Clinical Math IV question- HELP!!
im just curious.... why do we ask questions like this in exams? most of the hospitals in us have infusion pumps. and most drugs are mixed by pharmacy which includes how fast you run the drug. i understand calculating for dose yes.. i rechecked my dose even if i use pump when i infused vasoactive agents but asking how much flow rate??? for antibiotics??? just curious.... when you start working you are going to use an iv tubing specific for an infusion pump, you are not gonna have a micro or macro drip factor that you have to know and calculate... the pump will run your antibiotic safely. do they ask this in the nclex exam? instead of asking this type of question.... why not focus on teaching the mechanisms of the drug. if one knows the mechanism of a certain drug then we may know the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.

Where are the DNP Programs?
I know TCU and U of Pittsburg offer DNP for CRNAs. Texas Wesleyan University and Virginia Commonwealth University offer DNAP.

Cardiac Vascular Nurse Certification by ANCC
Learning is a continous process my friend. I love to learn new things. Nope, actually these were credentials I wanted for so long but could not afford to take ( they are expensive you know ) but now, I can afford them. Also, Im still active in critical care education so I want to make sure I'm prepared.

Heart Failure + Synthroid
Maybe it just so happen that your current patients are all hypothyroid. One of the essential components of HF is cardiac remodelling. Increasing thyroid hormone thru an exogenous mean may increase ventricular wall thickness which will worsen HF.

IV Methylene blue post OHS vasoplegia
Yes, it is a common intervention for a vasopressor refractory hyotension mostly seen in induction during coronary artery bypass. Many studies in the past decades concluded the effectiveness of the agent and the post operative course has been significant. Although a variety of mechanisms have been proposed to explain how methylene blue achieves vasopressor effects, it is now widely accepted that the major pathway in the adrenergic response is due to the blockade of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is released in the endothelium and activates guanylyl cyclase which increases cGMP intracellularly causing relaxtion and vosodilation.

Paid during the clinicals?
Two of my classmates who went to VA for clinicals were not employee of VA. They got stipend from the hospital. If you are talking about schorlarship, I don't think VA offered one. Baylor used to offer 2 anesthesiology scholarship per year but stopped a few years back.

Can anyone recommend a few good DNP or PhD programs?
Thank you so much for these info. You have a great day. T.

Csc/cmc
Yes, I am. I am still directly involved in critical care education. I spend some of my free time doing lectures and hemodynamics training. That if I have enough free time left. DNAP is harder than I thought with a full time job. CV anesthesia is challenging and I am enjoying it. Good luck. Where you going for anesthesia school? T

Can anyone recommend a few good DNP or PhD programs?
I just read your post. Very interesting. Now, I have a question... do you know where i can get funding for DNAP? I work full time but it would be nice to find scholarship for DNAP. I know it was hard to find scholarship for my MSNA, would DNAP be the same?

Paid during the clinicals?
Three clinical sites from TWU offers clinical stipend not much but good enough. Colton, VA in Dallas and Dener Health.

iphone as PDA
May I suggest the ACTc by gasshead.com. I wish I had this application when I was in school. Also, skyscape has tons of anesthesia softwares you can use. Enjoy your clinical rotation....

US citizen thinking of take RN in the Philippines
Just an advice... Stay in Washington and get you to nursing school here. Our program in RP is 4 years BSN unless it was changed. No offense to my alma mater, I am proud to be a product but that was 18 years ago and reading all the changes here will be an easy decision to get your RN in Washington State. Just my honest advice.
