  1. Well, I've been here all my life, as well as my parents and grandparents..and I have NEVER seen, either recently..or in the past, 'footage' of Klansmen on TV. AND I am from Polk county, I have heard of the ADL, and the other groups you mention, but not the JDL..perhaps that is what you were referring to. Auburndale is in Polk county, and the people that I have known there for decades are really nice, loving Christian, decent people..You make it sound like we are ALL walking around with swastika tattoos and hearts filled with hate, when NOTHING but the opposite is true. It is more than offensive, it is hurtful to me. I have many friends who are jewish..I am sorry you feel the way you do. It just seems rather odd to me that a multi-generational Floridian posts such things in the "Hate Florida" thread, when the multi-generational Floridian's I know have nothing but love and admiration for their home. And you know what, rather than hang around and wait for you or someone else to take another shot at this state, I am going to unsubscribe myself from this thread...and contact the admins and request my account be deleted. Before I do that, maybe you would find the following information helpful. The first jewish U.S. Senator was David Levy Yulee of Florida, and the second was Judah Benjamin, the latter was also the Secretary of State of the Confederacy. I know this, because I am a member of the SCV, the Jubal Early camp, which has many black members (before you go off about that) in good standing, who are also friends of mine. You certainly do not want to engage me in a historical conversation about slavery, and the Morrill tarriffs, and the burning and looting of the South, because it would be too much for you. I will leave you to your slanted and obscured belief system. I have enjoyed reading and sharing on this board, but if what I post, or post in, is going to be subject to such rhetoric, defaming a person's homeland..and characterizing the citizens of that homeland as hate mongers and such..I have better things to waste my time with. Regards
  2. You know..This post is just sickening. I can see folks bashing Florida, because people from other 'places' have been flocking here for decades, bring their filth and corruption with them, then blaming it on the people who have been here ALL their lives, living peacefully alongside people of all types of ethnic groups. So, it boils down to some 'claim' about the defunct KKK, and compounds of hateful people. Please leave Florida as fast as you can, if this is how you view the world..If what you do is spread this kind of belief system to others, you really should review your own motives. I makes me sad to think this is who is providing health care services to people here in this state. Take a real long close look at this picture, and point out the Floridians, if you can.
  3. I worked as an OPS (seasonal) ranger for the Florida Dept. of Natural Resources for a few years..mainly, so I knew where the good fishing holes were.. and most of our 'perp' types were poachers and such..but the interaction is very similar.. Most of my male nurse friends are ex-military, ex-cops, and so on. We make great nurses. I had one friend who was a SF Marine, and got his cave-diving/rescue certification, and his BSN..Quite a character. He did have a little too much ladies man thing going on, though..if you know what I mean.
  4. I guess he'd make a good scrub wench, too..
  5. Plus, WE have this guy...

  7. My grandfather had one of the first furniture stores in Brooksville. Spring Hill is a beautiful area, even to this day.. A few years ago, the ADA had a 10K Bike Rally, all through those hills up by St. Leo's..(do I have it right..?) THAT area is one of the prettiest areas of Florida. Fla. Ranked No. 10 in Education
  8. Did you use Pearson Vue ?? If so, you can pay 8-10 bucks to find out now..If you are waiting on the CA Nursing boards WS for the answer, mine did not show up on the FL Nursing board WS for over a week. Congrats, and I just said a little prayer for you.
  9. I really wish about 15 million would agree with you...:heartbeat:redbeathe:nuke:
  10. Are you trying to pass the RN boards. and for what state ?? The NCLEX exam is based on Nat'l Council of State Boards of Nursing..as I guess you know...I was under the impression they forced you to take a certified refresher course, in your situation.. I passed my PN boards..which I am sure are way easier than RN boards. I had not practiced in several years, so I used Lippincott's study guide, and the Chicago Pharmacology Review. The CD rom included with both allowed me to be more portable, and also mimics the rate adaptive testing. I just did my best to memorize everything I could..and also got a nursing PDR to review. Also..your state board should provide you with a written results, so you can review your strong and weak areas ?? Regards..
  11. Wow.. It's been a while since I've heard someone other than close friends and relatives refer to cow killers.. That and stinger nettles. Great post. When the refugees started their influx into Florida from Vietnam, my Dad was amazed at them begging him for the green ones, but being a typical southerner, he was glad to help them out..as long as they were not haughty..(very important to learn Southron to fit in..) They love to pickle them.
  12. Cool thread.. great topic. Sheesh.. I'm ex-military, and a whole bunch of other 'manly' stuff, and nursing is not only the toughest sport I have been involved with, some of the 'toughest' characters I have run into were nurses.. Oddly enough, I used to partner with another guy who was also ex-military..etc. etc.. and when we would 'fill in' for teams, he and I would really give great service to our patients..I guess I am saying that on the surface, it appeared he was quite the 'lady's man' (whereas I am Mr. Married..very happily, I might add) yet, I was quite pleased at his eagerness to really give that extra 'sweet touch' to our patients. It was kind of funny going cave diving and to our regular poker game, then tackling that pesky diaper.
  13. In '93 I left a $15.05 + $2.00 diff Med-Surg LPN job (that I got as a GN ) for a $10.00 an hour job (with ALL the OT I wanted) for an EP doctor, and as a Cath lab float scrub. Sure, it was crazy, but I acquired very difficult to acquire experience, which enabled me to get my IV cert. and qualify to work in the units PRN (as much as I wanted), and also get some cath lab experience. My point is that sometimes the way to where you want to go is not exactly from A to B.
  14. It doesn't matter if the DON is the mother-in-law of a nurse that is using on the job, in particular stealing the meds from the facility/patient. To protect yourself, don't be positive on a drug test. To protect your patients, report a suspicion of drug use anonymously. It could be MS that is missing next time, and the guilty party might flush a heplock with potassium, like a nurse I know did. Sorry to be so brash about it, but no one is being done any service by covering up for anyone under the influence giving patient care. That lady died, and she was being discharged that day.
  15. I was standing in 3" of water when that one hit. Go to Indian Rocks..or any of the Gulf Beaches between the Skyway and New Port Richey this spring.. When it is hot enough and the wind is flat.. (look at how calm it is) and use greenbacks.. The guy that I started hanging out with from Indiana, and I , caught eight or ten just standing there.. HA. !! I guess I should put some sort of moniker under my handle that signifies the rooster characteristics. I'm not sure where you are, but lately, it seems that road construction is ALL that is being built around here.. in Polk, we were the 6th or 7th fastest growing area in the country..(U.S.) when the boom was on, so now we have literally dozens of unfinished developments. Road construction seems to be at a fair pace, even still.. glad to see some of our property tax money doing something..
  16. My wife doesn't know what to make of the "sister" comment.. and I cannot edit, or I would change 'their' to there...oops.. Me, I LOVE :heartbeat hurricanes.. yes I know, it's stupid. Several years ago, I installed a generator that I can kick in for the whole house..(after one or two three week periods of spam...and MRE's) and it serves as a reminder that the weather can be testy here in the sandpile. Actually, I think Florida suffers fromt he same fate as any fast growing state, inadequate planning for traffic, utilities, etc.. I have seen an upsurge in 'planned' communities, like Harmony near St. Cloud, Celebration, near Disney..and one we drove through this morning on our way home from Jax., Nocatee. But if you have tried to be a resident of Miami..Tampa..or Orlando, over the last ten years..it is worse than Atlanta as far as construction goes..It took them forever to reconfig Malfunction Junction..and it is time to do it again, and they all but just finished. To be perfectly honest, some days.. I hate my home state..but I guess I am dysfunctional in some weird sort of way.. Here is one of the reasons I stay.. (btw the feller standing next to me is from Indiana..great guy)
  17. We never locked our doors till all the people from other states started moving here. My girls attended a private school until this past year, and we just could not afford it any longer..fortunately, they now attend a brand new (first year) school that is on 143 acres..That's right, the school is almost as big as a military installation. My daughter made All State chorus first year. Their are problems as with any school, but I have noticed that some areas of the country tout famously how advanced they are, but when you visit, it is evident that not many people move there..or have left there, for hundreds of years... That brings us back to the original concept I am quite familiar with..being that since I sat at my Grandpa's knee and listened to his horror stories of 'new' people coming here, then again, listening to my Dad say the same thing..and now my children listen to me say the same thing.. So, actually..I am glad people find Florida disdainful. Maybe they will go back to the tundra land and stop trying to tell us how we are supposed to be living. Then we can have our beaches back..and the aquifer will heal itself.. Florida was a magic land once upon a time..now it looks more and more like Detroit as the days go by...yuk
  18. Some might think you a crackpot for making such a statement, but in all my life in the service, and for many years after.. I had not run across a situation where any life saving measures were needed. When I was first practicing as a nurse, I worked as a scrub 'wench' in the cath lab, and we were of course, required to get our ACLS. Within three months of getting mine, I ran across three separate incidents out in the general public that required me using those skills I had learned.. AT first, I thought it was either coincidence, or maybe I was just 'looking' at things a bit differently, but after the third one..I kind of realized that these things weren't just 'happening' at all..
  19. Awesome... Yeah, once you start pressure..or compressions, you own it. Bless your heart..
  20. Clarissa Harlowe Barton was born on Christmas day, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts, to Stephen and Sarah Barton. She was the youngest of five children. Barton's father and mother were abolitionists. Clara's father was a farmer and horse breeder, while her mother Sarah managed the household. The two later helped found the first Universalist Church in Oxford. Clara had two brothers, Stephen and David. Young Clara was educated at home and extremely bright. It is said that her siblings were kept busy answering her many questions, and each taught her complementary skills. Her brothers were happy to teach her how to ride horses and do other things that, at the time, were thought appropriate only for men. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clara_Barton
  21. Merry Christmas to all !!
  22. Gee.. I wonder why Florida has been one of the fastest growing states for several years running, if it's so bad..?? This year, we did not make the top ten list, but regardless..the question still stands.. I love my state, and as for it's decline, it certainly isn't the fault of the very fine and hospitable people who have resided here for years.. My grandfather was very close personal friends with "Mr. Edison", and it sure was Mr. Disney's place to grow.. If anything, I attribute the de-generation of Florida to the hordes of non-natives who have come here expecting to live an island life, or something..This state has ALWAYS been for the tough and mentally prepared, vis a vis the bugs, heat and hurricanes. I guess I have posted a lot on this thread, because I take exception to all those who think they know Florida, but yet really are just passers through.. As for the schools..My daughters have attended private school, up until this year..They really wanted to go to a new public school that was just built..and it is just awesome. It sits on 143 acres, and has state of the art EVERYTHING.. just unbelievable.. Of course, like every public school, it has it's share of kids whose parents have turned their children over to the state to raise.
  23. Sheesh.. I thought that this forum was one place I could escape 'Hate for Southerners'. Guess I was wrong. http://fcit.usf.edu/florida/lessons/famous.htm btw.. Next time you turn on your air conditioner..Thank another Floridian.
  24. I am a fourth generation Floridian.. Sounds to me like you have been listening to some pretty culturally biased people. And for the record, I have nothing against cultural bias, as I am just as biased about the wonderful cesspits I have lived in up north. Of course, this is the point in the conversation where the discussion tends to disintegrate to name calling.. oops, So, I'll just say, I would love it if all the people who don't like Florida would just leave. BTW, Someone should tell my deceased grandfather who wrote a book on veterinary medicine that is still in use, that Floridians have low IQs..
  25. I took report on a homeless client (who somehow had managed to have girlfriend who was visiting) who had come back from a three day battery of testing, which just happened to include various and sundry IV analgesics..i.e MS the first day for angina, then the cath meds, bla bla.. Anyway, he was for discharge after the results of his heart scan came back (ordered because he threatened to sue the doc that was so blessed to be assigned to him) IF they were negative..And they were, so I had the distinct pleasure of getting him ready to travel. When I walked in (first meeting) He immediately started feigning CP. I did a quick set of vitals and then informed him I was aware of his recent history, and that Dr. So n So had discharged him. He jumped out of bed and began pulling his pants on over his gown..screaming and throwing crap around the room. His 'girlfriend' started her own set of 'symptoms', as I stuck my head out to my partner and 'asked' her to call security. The man sort of settled down..and I tried to piece the situation back together... We came to an agreement that if he would allows me to remove his heplock, and sign a AMA form,( the doc did want to say good bye) He could be on his way. At some point in the signing of the AMA (with me standing there like a statue with my partner) he succumbed to the withdrawal a little more, and ripped the form and threw it, and some other stuff at us.. As he stomped down between the stations and the rooms towards the elevators, myself and a few other of the staff followed along..Me asking for the heplock, and we all converged at the elevators. He had pushed the wrong buttons and was about to go up, instead of down..and when the correct doors opened, I pointed at them, and in he went...with me and four or five other staff members..It was too much for him, and we tackled him, after locking the elevators between the floors. We got the heplock, and he played possum on us. The two of us from the unit realized that he may in fact be syptomatic..(unlikely, but possible) so we grabbed a gurney, and took him to the ER. There, he peeked out long enough to notice the MD that was attending was a pretty new intern..So he quickly became A & O x 4.. We managed to 'glean' enough reality out of the situation to get the AMA signed.. By the time he walked out into the ER parking lot, a nice deputy was there to escort him off the property..I then heard that his girlfriend was back up on the floor..with CP ... THEN..he was pulled back around tot he ER, by the deputies..and admitted to the 7th floor uh oh.. But the day was young. At some point, he bashed a deputy in the face with something..so they took him to a now closed county operated facility, infamously referred to as 'Wing E' *spooky music* Visitors..Who needs em..:chuckle
