  1. Just to clarify - do you already have a bachelor's degree? If so you can probably do an accelerated program. I know the one here at Hopkins is a 13 month program, very stressful, but at least you're done in a year.
  2. So far, I only know of one college that has an evening/weekend program - CCBC - Essex. Anyone know of any others? Just curious. I'm attending Essex right now for my pre-reqs, but still want to keep my options open when it's time to apply for nursing school.
  3. congratulations You will be right down from the Hippodrome. If you're a theatre buff, make sure you check out a few shows. It's a beautiful theatre.
  4. If anyone needs a refresher on the chemistry part, I'm so glad I bought the book "An Introduction to Chemistry for Biology Students" . It's really helping me a lot. It's a workbook that takes you step by step through all the atoms, molecules, neutrons, protons, etc. and puts them in simple terms so you can understand the concepts. I think it should be required for anyone taking a biology course, especially on the molecular level.
  5. Ahhh! This is harder than I thought it was going to be! Lots of Chemistry is involved in molecular biology and it's been way too long since my last chemistry class. I feel like I'm so far behind and it's only the 3rd week. Anyone else?
  6. Actually JHH just raised all of their salaries in June (I work for them). They are very competitive now salary-wise.
  7. Most science courses have labs and yes the lab manuals are important to follow the labs. I have biology this semester and went to get my manual yesterday (the class starts today). Why wouldn't you buy what you need?
  8. Doesn't this bug you though? I did a group project with a few youngsters over the summer and they were not focused at all. I ended up doing most of the work. I'd love to be able to do labs on my own.
  9. We have a evening/weekend program here, but when I apply I'm taking advantage of a program here at work (I work for a hospital) where I can go to school and work part time but still retain my full time benefits and salary. It's a huge benefit and was put into place to fill the nursing shortage. When I graduate I will work as a nurse for the hospital for a year as a payback.
  10. YAY for us! I think the only person that has NOT questioned my return to school is my fabulous partner of 8 years. Despite all the questions and doubts like "...at YOUR AGE??? (how many of us have heard that one?) We still persevere and go for it. We are phenomenal people all of us.
  11. :yeah:Yayy! But you took the first step and registered to do it! I know exactly what you're going through but in my case it's been 17 years. I was the oldest one in my Psych class over the summer (including the teacher :imbar). I was struck by how young these kids are when we started talking about Sept 11th and nobody had a real grasp for what happened that day. They couldn't! They were only 12 or 13 at the time But I was the smartest kid in the class anyway and ended up with an A - people were looking to me for answers Use your experience and motivation to keep you going even when it starts getting tough! You'll be glad you waited, believe me.
  12. Definitely look on Amazon.com for your textbooks. I also sell the ones I have used and make some money that way:yeah:. If you put the ISBN number in, you will be sure that you are getting the right edition. Also don't forget Barnes & Noble. My Bio text was 176 in the bookstore at college, but cheaper on BN.com. Plus I have a book club membership so I got an additional discount. I think I paid around $120 instead for a brand new book.
  13. No, Microbiology is an entirely separate course, which I also have to take later on after A&P. This one is called Cell & Molecular biology.
  14. I'm taking Biology 110 - Cell & Molecular Biology. I start on August 26. Next WEEK! I'm excited and nervous, but at least it's the only class I'm taking and I can give it my full attention. It's been longer for me. I haven't been in a college classroom for close to 18 years.:imbar
  15. I'm 42 and just starting back myself. I have 3 years before I even start nursing school. Do you feel old and unable to learn? Probably not. It's never too late. I'm a vegetarian myself and I hear ya about the dissections, but like a friend of mine said to me, the kitty is already dead and nothing you can do about it. The cats are not cute and cuddly like ours at home. Think of it as giving it's life to your future learning. Otherwise it died in vain. Just like you need to separate yourself emotionally from your patients you can separate your sympathy for the animal from your need to learn. Hope that helps.
  16. I have to take this as a pre-req to A&P. Anyone else taking it? I just perused my text book and I'm kind of freaking out because it looks complicated Anyone already take it? Any tips for getting an A?
  17. Oh there's Greater Baltmore Medical Center as well.
  18. Sinai University of Maryland Medical Center Harbor Hospital Center Franklin Square Hospital Northwest Hospital That's off the top of my head. There are more.
  19. I had a C in Psychology from 25 years ago and was advised to retake it to improved my GPA. If for some reason you don't get in, maybe you can retake the classes you got a C in. Right now, I'm taking one class at a time and feel like that's all I want to do. The better my GPA, the better my chances. You may not like how they choose who gets in, but you need to play by their rules so that you can get in and show them you were worth the risk. I would talk to your advisor and see how you can improve your chances if you need to apply again next year. Best of luck.
  20. I still have one more week of the summer semester and then the Fall semeseter begins August 25th. I only get 2 weeks off!
  21. Old lady here too (42). I use a backpack just because sometimes I like to have my laptop with me and it really does feel better than putting all that weight on one shoulder. I'm beyond worrying about looking cool anyway, I say do what is comfortable for you.
  22. You might also want to talk to your counseling center about getting some advice on test anxiety and the best way to approach the test. Most people don't know they can get help like this one on one.
  23. Federal Hill is a nice area, however if you are worried about the cost of car insurance, you will pay lots more living in the city rather than the county. I have lived in both and my insurance almost doubled when I moved to the city. I really can't tell you about car vandals, but I used to work in Owings Mills. My car was never vandalized. You don't want to be off Reisterstown Rd, you want to be closer to the mall like the above poster said on Lakeside Blvd. I think the only way you're going to make up your mind is just come and look around and see what's appealing to you. Get a 6 month lease rather than a year so in case you're not happy you don't have a long obligation. Any apartment community is going to be loud (it has to be with so many people living in the same area), unless you move into a senior living area..lol. Once you live here for a while, talk to some people, and get a feel for the area, you will decide where you want to be permanently. Honestly, it's not a bad place.
  24. I'm retaking Psych 101 this summer to improve my GPA. Unfortunately one of the requirements is a goup paper & presentation. My group has not even started. I emailed everyone in the group and asked to divide the work up so we can get done. I haven't heard one word back from anyone. I want to email the instructor and ask if I can just turn in my own paper since nobody wants to work together. There are only 3 groups in the whole class and each has their own assigned topic. I hate that I'm grouped with the slackers in class:banghead:...what would you do???
  25. If you have the time to go right to RN, go for it. If you feel like you would like to get a job faster go for your LPN and then do a LPN-RN bridge. The good part is most employers will pay for your schooling if you do that. I don't think anyway is particularly "better". You just need to figure out which is best for you.
