New Grads/RNs without any work for almost a year now
SA is better I think but you will still have to work hard to get a job if your a new grad. They hire more around May and December so it is all about timing for new grads! If you have 1 years experience you can find a job almost anywhere. Good luck!

New Grads/RNs without any work for almost a year now
I have looked all over Texas I will post about my experience and advice to others once I gain a postion. I have learned a lot over the search process and will definitely pass on what I have learned so others can avoid the mistakes I made and have an easier search. Hopefully very soon my search will be over and I will update here for everyone.

New Grads/RNs without any work for almost a year now
Keep on looking is my only advice! I am at 6 months now with only 3 interviews after applying everywhere. With BSN, ACLS, PALS, and great resume. Times are tough and not getting any better sadly even for nursing!

No jobs...Seriously reconsider nursing school
I agree with Cleo comments if you cant handle the truth then dont read it! But I do beleive a real nursing shortage will exist in ten years when the old baby boomer nurses hang up the scrubs! That is why the schools are cranking out students now unfortunately the flow of students occurred ten years too early. I know from my experience as a new grad with a BSN in the Hourston area as of tomorrow thank you! That only 5-10 out of 120 grads from my school have a job in nursing lined up. I was told from senior nurses who taught us they have never seen a worse situation for new grads ever! So yes indeed those who planned on easily paying back huge student loans after graduation are not too happy currently. So I would give a second thought on if the cost is worth the reward if things stay the way they are now? For me I decided to continue my education into another higher field and am hoping the economy is better next time around upon graduation but only time will tell? So what field is safe right now to go into? Nothing in my opinion so do something you really want to do and it better be something you would do for free because no degree has any guarantees anymore. Heck even teachers and astronauts are out of a job here soon LMAO! just my 2 cents!

question regarding license
RULE 217.5Temporary License and Endorsement D. Upon initial licensure by endorsement, the license is issued for a period ranging from six months to 29 months depending on the birth month. Licensees born in even-numbered years shall renew their licenses in even-numbered years; licensees born in odd-numbered years shall renew their licenses in odd-numbered years. I hope this answers your question sorry I thought it was under the FAQ section but sometimes you have to actually have to read the rules to find answers. Good luck.

New grad relocating to Houston ... is it THAT bad out there?
My advise dont stop in Houston unless you are an experienced nurse or already have a guaranteed job. Go to San Antonio or El Paso. Google hospital webistes at those cities and apply they are hiring currently but Houston, Dallas and Austin areas jobs for unexperienced nurse are scarce and almost non existent.I think it doesnt matter where your from or what degrees you got but if your a new grad its tough all over! Clinical experience doesnt really help unless it is registered nurse experience. I am a little confused about your post you said you were in a Nurse practitioner program? My response is why not finish it since currently jobs are hard to find now. Maybe in 2 years things will change. Also any jobs available now wont be available soon because every nursing school in the state is cranking out graduates here in April to May and flooding the already saturated new grad market here and in every other state. I forecast lots of unemployed new graduate RN's for years to come until schools get a clue and slow down the graduation rates and finally hopefully align graduate perecentage with jobs available percentage and realistically stop going by this false nurse shortage propaganda the government and nurse lobbyists groups keep advertising.

To be or not to be a nurse...
If you have the desire to do something do it and dont look back! If you are looking for the easiest or highest paying profession dont do nursing! If you sincerely felt the need to help people even when it goes unappreciated most of the time and dont have any expectations other than a personal feeling of making the world a better place then Nursing is your calling! Good luck its your life choose wisely.

I need some advice.
You can still get into nursing. UTMB places a lot of emphasis on the whole person concept not just GPA's. Write a really good essay when you apply and address the deficiencies you had earlier and how you have overcome them since. I recommend going to a school oreintation that is where I learned how to get into the UTMB school. It worked for me. Good luck if you dont apply you will never know? Also dont rule out going back to a community college and getting an ADN. Its cheaper, easier or atleast more availability which increases your chance for acceptance. It is easy to get in a RN-BSN progrma later if you want to after ADN. As for another degree if you want nursing then dont change. If you dont like nursing many other healthcare jobs use some of the credits but not all. Medical school, respiratory therapy, Nuclear medicine, physical therapy, radiation technician, physicaian assistant, etc... They all have decent salaries. Just follow your heart and dont quit! Good luck.

Not a drug user but tested positive for cocaine
My advice if you knew they were a drug abuser you should have avoided them and thus avoided the problem you have now. Druggies only care about drugs and until you learn that you will be putting yourself in danger of even worse situations than failing a drug screen. Second how did you pop a drug test without knowingly using drugs easy. Many druggies dip thier body part in drugs to give them power it is well documented so you probably did ingest the toxins from mouth to skin contact and digested it in your stomach which eventually leads into the bloodstream. My advice get some knew freinds then worry about your career!

Oklahoma nursing job market on the news
Same propaganda all over the USA! The economy is hitting healthcare too. Now the school are cranking out twice as many students as needed. Jobs are hard to find no matter what field or education level you are. It is hit or miss witha lot of luck and who you know to get your foot in the door. OK is no different from anywhere else, its bad all over!

$20k+ for LVN school....is it worth it?
This site has had 10 or 20 people ask this same question in last year. I recommend you use search function top right and read all the previous discussions. They might help. But I agree with above post go to a community college and check out that possubilty before assuming spending large cash will be quicker and easier. Colleges in Texas are almost free you cant beat them for any price.

UT- Application Process
Psych 2317 will meet a statistics requirement not a math requirement. I know that is confusing but that is the way it is. It isnt considered a math class by admissions it is a statistics course for research procedures. You must take a college level math class to meet your core requirement at any Texas college. Math 310 is a developmental class and will meet the TSI requirement but wont meet a core college math requirement. UT-h requires TSI completion for admission that translates to your math requirement must be done. If a school says you need 0310 then you do unless you test out of it. If you are uncertain as to the validity of this info then call UT-H. I am sure they will gladly answer your question and save you from confusion. Good luck!

UT- Application Process
You must be TSI complete to recieve a degree as per the state of Texas. So yes if you have not met the requirement through testing or a class then yes it will be a huge roadblock. I suggest you buy a book on basic math and see if you can study on your own and retest out of the requirement for the class. To be honest I dont know anyone who has ever been accepted into a BSN degree program without having completed atleast College Algebra one but I am sure a few exist. Good luck and dont avoid math because it plays a huge role in nursing in my opinion.

How do you think Obama's plans for health insurance will affect nursing salaries?
It is a no brainer answer. If hospitals make less money so will everyone else. Why would hospitals make less money. Because he is reducing payout on medicare and medicaid to fund all the new healthcare benefits/ programs. Just my opinion but it seems it is just a matter of time for salaries to take a hit. Hopefully I am wrong.

UTMB Summer '09 Applicants
Wow! everyone is so concerned with me. I feel so special. I am happy some graduates are so friendly and joyful. Many apply to multiple schools because they want to go where it feels right for them! Not just to a school that will take them. If only people would learn to read an entire message before responding to it. It has been a very unprofessional application process for me! In my opinion. You didnt experience what I have, so save the second guesses please. Is it a great school? Probably or else they would have went out of bussiness a long time ago. I never attended but my life experience has shown me that first impressions are usually correct. I didnt get a good impression with my short experience at school. Sorry to offend you highly educated, trained, and very wise graduates. On flexibility, you readers are so wise. I learned you have to know when to walkaway or accept or decline an offer and I did that. I dont think I will regret it. It isnt the only game in town people. I love this high school mentality of being so proud of your school. I gave that up a long time ago. Schools are just tools to get you where you want to go. Thats it! They also do need our money from tuition dont believe they do this for the humanity of it sorry to say. Maybe I should reconsider going since you had such a great time, atmosphere, support, and it was so happy. You loved it! It was amazing! You should be a recruiter for the Marine corps Ha! I dont think nursing is for you because you are missing your calling in life Aggie. Nursing is about helping people not about what school is happy and fun or which college you end up graduating from! Start the flames now. I wont respond again so have fun people with too much time on your hands.

UTMB Summer '09 Applicants
thanks DM, I decided to go to local college in fall. It isnt so rushed and is probably allot easier and student friendly in my opinion. I dont like being rushed when I applied almost a year ago. It is a bad sign of what lies ahead in my opinion. I will get my bsn online later. I hear it is a pretty simple process. Good luck to ya!

I got accepted too but I am disgruntled by the whole unorganized approach at UT and have decided to go elsewhere so someone else can enjoy my spot. I want nothing to do with UT Son! Enjoy your school peeps I hope it is better than the application process!

Thats it I am tired of waiting, they really need to get their act together. I have had it with this slow unprofessional school. You would think by 1 apr on this glorious day that everyone would know what the deal is! Only 32 days till classes start Jeez!
