  1. How may I join the Facebook group? It appears to be by invitation only!
  2. I am looking for something very similar...did you have any luck finding a course? I am also looking for an online stats course...would appreciate it if you could share any insight :) thx
  3. I have applied to Frontier and the only things missing are a stats and PA course transcript...can anyone share their approaches on the best, least expensive and most failsafe route for doing this? I understand Frontiers course are little bit on the pricey side...how is EC's stats course? Also are there any PA courses available online? or are they only in class... Thanks!!
  4. Has anyone ever gone the "portfolio route" in applying for frontier...what was your experience? Just wondering because thats been my route, and am waiting to hear back
  5. Hello! I am in the process of researching FNP programs that would work for me, and juggling between my list of desirables, and factoring in my limitations. I am currently in a BSN program that will hopefully wrap up next year..my wish list includes: 1. Decent pr credit hour cost (~300-400)..i could venture a bit higher if i got 2,3 and 4 2.School sets up preceptors in my local area ( i know i know..but hey, this is a wish list!!) 3.No GRE requirement 4.All didactic portion completely online and minimal on campus reqs I am in OH, about a 3 hour drive from frontier, and am hearing great things about this school: my question is can any frontier student or grad please give a ball park figure of how much it cost ? both for the MSN or the ADN-MSN options..ADN would include the brigde option obviously..I am early in a BSN program and am still weighing the cost options..i have no debt right now and want to do whatever to keep it that way ..:) Also how much help do they give in setting up clinicals? I currently work in a step down unit ( nearly one year after graduation) and deal with a lot of acute cases, but we have a policy of NOT allowing to be percepted where we work... dont ask me why.. I hope someone responds..I really need to know!!
  6. if it helps any i endorse LPNBearColumbus's point of view. i am an RN , from excelsiors program, and just got hired in a telemetry unit. I had no lpn experience as such, but plenty of overseas nursing experience. so what they want when they hire you is a--> your OH RN b--> nursing experience; if its unit specific , the better it is for you.
  7. i just looked up hunching and did not know there was such a thing as an urban dictionary. However doesn't mean i dont discuss it with my kids, sp my daughter (17)...i am 40 and way back when i was that age my parents also were very very open about it, i think it really helps, i know my daughter and i are closer for talking about it. If you have kids EVERYTHING about them is yr responsibility....please dont have kids for other ppl or the state to bring them up...what good is suing anyone after yr child is pregnant, the stupidity of these people never ceases to amaze!
  8. The best thing to do is to develop a checklist of skills that you need to review and then work your way down with them..if she/he knows it then ask her/him to do it, if not then teach or demonstrate. this way you can have a measurable evaluating tool as i can imagine you will have to do some sort of eval of the extern at the end...it gves u something to focus on, then just a random 'patient care' catch all...where is the externship(department/hospital?)
  9. thanks Schroedie! This is good insight as I am 'compiling' my resume this weekend.
  10. Hi, I am hoping to graduate in June/July of this year I was wondering how I should prepare for job interviews and if any one has insight that is hospital specific for hospitals in and around Cincy that they could share, it would be so helpful to me and a whole lot of other nurses too. What are the best places to apply for Med-Surg in the Cincy - West Chester area? Thanks in anticipation!!
  11. 1. How easy is it to find a furnished apartment in the city. While it is not hard to find a place, be aware that Dubai is a very expensive place, in some areas even more so than the US. Many folks who work there, tend to live in the neighboring emirates and commute to work. ofcourse if your employer gives you accommodation, thats a whole other issue. 2. How necessary is a car or could I rely solely on public transportation/taxis to get to work, go to the market etc. Again it depends on where you live. buses and taxis are not bad, some public transport is not airconditioned which is terrible in the heat. A car is good to have, but some apartment buildings do charge extra for parking spots, so make sure you know that ahead of time. 3. Do I need to pay taxes in the USA on the money I earn in Dubai. If you are a US citizen or green card holder and file taxes here, you need to pay tax on your income earned there. 4. Would my age (44 years old) hinder my job prospects. You will find differences in the work ethic as compared to the conditions here. The US has probably the fairest and the best rules on equal opportunity, and the best merit based job assessment and assignments. Of course no place is perfect, but there are rules for appeal in the workplace here that are probably the best in the world. Dubai is NOT as good. I have worked there and I know. The unspoken hierarchy is Arab nationals--> Arab non nationals-->whites-->Asians. If it sounds like overt racism it is and folks often know it and leverage it in their own interests. There is also a strong element of sexism.Younger is always better if one is looking for an unfair advantage. Differnt nationalities form cliques and are pretty clannish. A woman has to be actively assertive to hold her own in the workplace there. The employment rules are not fair, so be sure you negotiate your contract well going in. I had fought for my rights, but at the end of the day my workplace was not a happy place to be. I made a lot of money (tax free, as i was not a us citizen then), i make less here now, but I would still pick the Us as a better place to work in. Hope this helps!
  12. hi ..if you still have them: could you send me these notes on world religions?
  13. Hello all, Looking for ideas... I am a CPNE eligible EC (RN) student waiting on my test dates..can anyone recommend how I can get a job in a hospital in the cincy/dayton area that would help me get a feel of the real thing before CPNE? I have been told that it is helpful to be a STNA but cant afford to spend so much on another training when I am already paying out of pocket for the EC program...I am a certified phlebotomist however and did a 120 hr internship at Bethesda North, and did pretty well there. Didn't go back to work because I just wanted to hunker down and get the ADN out of the way...any ideas on where I could be looking or where they would be willing to take me on..?? Any pointers would be very happily received!!!
  14. thanks Lunah RN..! Thats a huge relief! I am send ing you a pm, another question I wanted help on regarding completing excelsior requirements thanks D
  15. approved by the NLN ? I wanted to apply for the RN internship once I get my CPNE done, and the hospitals where I applied have written back to ask if the Excelsior program is NLN approved as a preconditon for application ste. Any input would be helpful! Thanks!

I read a great deal about dissatifaction in the healthcare field, i see it all levels where i work...pretty much at all levels. Almost universally it seems to be that one enters this profession usually for good reasons and in good faith ie: 1. Be of use helping others 2. Being of service while making a living 3. A secure job what seems to often end up happening is: 1. Assembly line healthcare 2.Not enough time to enjoy being a caring worker/care giver 3.defensive healthcare practices( aka "cover yr butt", and / or "its not in my backyard") 4.Money is the ultimate bottom line 5.long hours/stressful work/sleep deprivation 6.Too much paperwork, too little care 7.family life negatively impacted 8.sometimes shady ethics prob many more What I am building upto here is trying to get a sense of what in an ideal world would be an ideal RN (or LPN/NA etc) 's job be like 1.Ideal patient/caregiver ratio 2.Ideal work hours (tradeoff between work and pay is a given) 3.Ideal work setting..ie home health, NH,hosp etc etc Would love to hear from all old and new nurses,LPNs, CNA and everyone reading this.. Why? I want us to dream up a perfect job, then go out there to demand it/fight for it, and if necessary create it for ourselves.. If we dont imagine it first how will we ever know what a perfect job looks like? hope to hear from some of you! Dolly
  17. thanks! thats longer than I figured on...sorry for sounding clueless but whats MPAC? Dolly
  18. Hi, I am planning to give the CPNE in OH..anyone know what the waiting time is? thanks!
  19. For what its worth, this is the reply I got from the ohio nursing board about this question: "Since this program is not based in Ohio, the Ohio Board of Nursing can not directly approve the program. However, Ohio does honor distance or on-line programs that have been approved by other state boards of nursing. I believe that Excelsior is based in New York. Therefore, you would have to contact the New York State Board of Nursing to make sure that the program has been approved by that state's board of nursing. If the program is approved by the New York State Board of Nursing, then Ohio will honor the program and you would be able to apply to take the NCLEX to become licensed in Ohio, after you have completed the program." (reply recd on may 30th 2008) and this is the response after i wrote to NY board of nursing "Excelsior College is part of the New York State University System and is an accredited school. Graduates of Excelsiors online programs are eligible to sit for the NCLEX RN exam." this was recd on 2nd june 2008.
  20. hi innar, my direct email is will look forward to yr reply thanks a million! mod note-as per terms of service please do not post email addresses in posts. please use the pm system
  21. hi Lunah no i have not yet registered..my ECE credential verification just came through and I have an email from the admissions saying i qualify for acceptance...so i am putting my paperwork together for the admissions application this weekend. i was hoping to get a head start on the prep by nailing my exam date as soon as possible and studying from that perspective. also could you recommend the most straightforward and least expensive way to study for these courses? any online prep, or CDs/books on ebay...i am desperately looking to cut costs on my program ... god bless ya! Dolly
  22. Can someone please help me find the link for NC 1 on the pearson vue website..cant seem to be able to!
  23. Hi all excelsior students and grads I am desperately looking to cut the costs of my EC program.. I have been accepted into the ASN on basis of my previous overseas medical experience, but while they process my application I want to start with the NC courses. I wanted to know if anyone can --> 1. recommend the least expensive way 2. help me understand how the process of giving it at a pearvue center works 3. which study material , notes, study guides, ebay sellers etc to buy from 4. any useful study groups online to join? I am hoping to be able to create a guide book on studying the EC route as I go along! Thanks in anticipation! Dolly
  24. hi tasha, good to hear back from you. will definitely get together and see if we can do a study group thing once in a while to keep us all on track .. as far as i know i have to do all the nursing concepts courses, and a few others..about 10-11 courses in all. then for the cpne. could u tell me the least expensive way to sign up and take NC 1-7? i have heard that NC 1 and 2 are ok to do even before yr admission is finalized? Dolly
  25. Hey Erin, no on the contrary, forewarned is forearmed !! I did contact the ohio nursing board and basically what they wrote back was that if its ok with the NY nursing board its ok with them..so then i wrote to the NYNB and they said EC was fine with them... i will double check with hospitals in this area that are hiring! thanks for the heads up! Dolly i have > 500 clinical hours in an overseas medical program..would that count towards nursing clinical hours?
