  1. Just today saw a 15lb fibroid tumor removed and a thyroid the size of very large sweet potatoe. I missed the fishing lure from the rectum a few weeks ago though.
  2. I just started in the OR and contaminated a corner of a back table surface. It was just covered with a sterile towel the procedure continued.
  3. FYI to last poster about the LPN bridge, it would be better and faster to just wait until Spring 2011 for the RN program. The bridge is the exact same length as the RN program. So if you start the LPN program in Fall 2010, you won't start the RN "bridge" until spring 2012 or later, and then you'll have 16 months till you're done with the RN program, 2014 or later. 4 additional months is a much better bet. You'll be done with RN by 2012. IMO as a graduate from the RN program with MANY LPN's in my classes.
  4. I too just got hired as and OR RN and had the same question about Surg Tech training! Thanks for the responses!
  5. I am black, just graduated in August, waiting for boards. In 16 months of clinicals I saw only one RN and one LPN. I also live in Florida, North East Florida (which is REALLY south GA). In my graduating class of about 96, I was one of 3. My cousin is a nurse, oh and he's black. Yet I have seen COUNTLESS UAP's, environmental service workers, and food service employee's. In my particular cohort of 24, 3 black males began and only I finished, the other 2 will finish eventually, one in December and the other at another college. It's and untapped goldmine of opportunity, but it doesn't come with the bling and prestige of being an athletic star. Thanks to the OP for posing this question. Until now, I thought I was the only one wondering.
  6. Hey, I know you asked Whitney about Mrs Bridges, but I'm taking her now in 2nd term for Adult Health 1. All I can say is you will learn a lot, but it WILL be painful. She's tough but fair. If you have her for Techniques, please believe you will have a really thorough understanding of careplans and pathology because she will make you work. Hope that helps. Feel free to contact me with pm if you have any other questions.
  7. Hey guys! I haven't posted since mid July, I in the Night/Weekend Summer program that started in May and I'm glad to see the enthusiasm of your cohort. You guys are unfortunate in that it has been an absolutely crazy fall enrollment for all terms, but I have noticed that some things have been either eliminated from first term or postponed. Congrats again to all who made it and keep trying for those who didn't. This next statement will make no sense especially in light of all of the money you've laid out so far, but if at all possible DO NOT WORK!!!! I found out the hard way half way thru the term when I increased me hours. Oh, and please remember this, you'll be trying to figure out what the hell is going on and where you stand and what to study and which book you need and what class you're in (during said class) up until the last day of the term. Enjoy! Feel free to pm with any specific questions or call me (pm for number)! Michael (One term down, three to go!! wooo hoooo!!!!!!!!!)
  8. I'd like to weigh in on this discussion as I am male and wear white scrubs. The assumption, I feel, is that the OP was either of european descent or a fairer of fairer skinned ethnicty. Being african american, i wear black or very dark colored under wear as for my skin color it is less visible. I've never worn "nude" or "brown" or "flesh" colored and haven't had any issues. Just waned to add a differing viewpoint as the OP didn't state what his actually skin tone was.
  9. A year? I'll give it a week! LOL
  10. That was exactly my point about the skills kit. Unless yours was different than mine, there really weren't many skills to practice with it. Injection, foley, dressing change, IV starts, piggyback and NG tube. What from the kit will be used in Adult health that wasn't already used in techniques?
  11. Congrats to eveyone the got their acceptances letters! Enjoy your next few weeks of freedom. Like someone at our orientation told us, kiss your families goodbye for the next 16 months. Also, for those of you who did not get in, don't give up.
  12. The skills kit is a bunch of crap that you won't need or use in class until you take the final techniques simulation. Its got syringes, IV catheters, a foley catheter, dressing change kit and some other stuff. Actually, I take that back, you will use some of the stuff before then but I'm still trying to figure out why it was $87.00 You'll need to get a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff, a BIG back pack with 2 straps and use both. LOTS of printer ink and paper, LOL. Reading glasses cuz your eyes are gonna give out from all the reading you'll have to do.
  13. I am roflmao right now! I've been following this thread for a long time too. I'm in the night/weekend track that started in May 08 and looking-for-miracles put it best when she said if you're stressing this much now you better get your happy pills ready for when you start. My suggestion is to remember this excitement and that you WANTED to be in the nursing program. You chose FCCJ for a reason. Say what you will about being disorganized but its one of if not THE least expensive ADN program and has an NCLEX pass rate that is consistently over 90%. This evening in class EVERYONE was b****ing and moaning about a change to an assignment for one class and another useless study guide that was sent out for another class. It struck me the just 10 weeks ago we were chomping at the bit to get started and now all we do is complain. ***** When you guys get in, and I'm sure you all will , PLEASE remember the excitement of just the anticipation of getting in the program. I wish that previous students would have told me this. I may get flamed for this post but I'm still chuckling because if you think this waiting is bad, you guy's are in for such a rude awakening at orientation when you find out exactly what IN that skills kit you just paid $87.00 for and what you'll actually NEED. Oh, and just when you think you've gotten all of your books, they just may spring another one on you. Oh, btw, if any other first termers tell you otherwise they're lying!!! LOL
  14. DO NOT CALL THE OFFICE!!!! You won't get any answers and will just be even more frustrated. I KNOW it hard to hear, but patience is what needed now.
  15. Ok, I know my brain is fried (first term ns) but isn't THIS the Male Nursing Student Forum? I'm not being a smart a**, just afraid I might be losing it! (I just spent the last 4 hours catching up on Pharm assignments.) Also, I agree with the earlier poster who said that school really isn't as "HARD" as most make it out to be, its the sheer volume of work that has to be done that takes its toll on you.
  16. I'm confused about the first scenario. Wouldn't the the left mastectomy and right picc line exclude either arm or forearm being used for bp?
  17. You're gonna be praying for time your first week in school, trust me. I should be on this forum because if have so much work to do, but I enjoy the vicarious (sp?) anticipation. I'm reliving February all over again!
  18. I've been following this thread and I'm as excited as all of you are who applied for Fall term. I started Summer term in May and am just starting clinical rotations. I can't wait to congratulate you all! If you have any questions feel free to send a pm. I'm in the Night/Weekend track.
  19. Today was my first day in NS and I swear I REALLY wanted to say this TODAY! Do you REALLY need to keep reapplying topical Benedryl in class, in the front during lecture. And if you are that itchy, why the hell haven't you been to the Dr? You're recording the lecture, I'm recording the lecture. If I can here your PENCIL squeaking across the page, surely YOU can. Either use a pen or take notes FROM THE LECTURE YOU'RE RECORDING at home with your squeaky pencil. And yes, I can here your pencil squeaks on the recorded lecture, thanks! On a positive note: I've never been surrounded by a more diverse group of people. It takes me out of my comfort zone which is unsettling to me, but welcome. The energy of my class is really dynamic and seemingly self perpetuating...lets keep it up for 16 months guys!!
  20. I just started my first week of Nursing school and it's been utter chaos! I'm taking a pharmacology class online, and of the 4 classes I'm taking, it's the only one for which I've been able to access the syllabus and other course materials. I truly hate going into a new class "cold" but what can you do. I'm taking night/weekend classes which was a spur of the moment last minute decision that occurred during orientation a month ago. I've been chomping at the bit to get started and now that it's here I'm scared *********!!! Interestingly, posts from a few years ago lamented the lack of testosterone in class, but not my school. Perhaps because its the night/weekend track, but 60% of my class of about 24 is male. For this term, of 96 admitted, a LEAST 40% of the total enrollment is male. The one constant I've found in my journey to nursing school is that nothing is as bad as its rumored to be......it's MUCH, MUCH worse! In 16 months when this part of my journey has ended, I hope to look back and still be able to identify with the idealistic, hopeful, energetic, eager to learn and to help person that I am today. Not only to identify with, but to BE that person, only matured, refined and a nurse!
  21. I had the same problem with hep b. I called and admin said to sign the declination paper for hep b and just continue the series.
  22. Sorry to beat a dead horse but are you kidding me?!?! I've just recently gotten accepted into, imho, the best ADN program in NE Florida and worked my butt off to get there. I worked full-time while attending school full-time with a wife and child, gpa of 3.41 and scored 126 on the NAT (of which only 120pts max were accepted). "People" say that males get preference. Who are these "people"? They obviously didn't make the determination of who would be in my class of 75 that starts in May. And, here it goes, it completely boggles my mind that in 2008 someone can think/say that about women! I, as a married male of 13 yrs was offended. I, as a black male who is bombarded with how much affirmative action is ruining the country was offended. I, as an older student having to compete with younger brains with fewer responsibilities was offended. I can say unequivocally that I have EARNED my spot in class. I do hope that you take to heart the words of some of the other posters. Please examine the reasons why you want to be a nurse, I implore you. Maybe I'm reading/making to much out of this, but if this is how you think before you're even in nursing school, what will be you attitude when dealing with patients?
  23. Jacksonville, FL here! Just got accepted into FCCJ Nursing program starting in May.
