JUST took NCLEX and felt GREAT. Could that be BAD?
Congratulations!!! I'm taking mine in 3 hours:eek:!!! I hope I walk out feeling the same way you did!!!!!!!

What was your game plan for the NCLEX???
I don't really have a game plan either. I graduated last month and take the NCLEX tomorrow. I spoke to a few of my classmates that took it last week- they all passed and said it wasn't nearly as hard as they thought it would be. I studied hard during school, so hopefully that will be enough :)

Books for Calhoun Fall Program
meRVT, We didn't need that book (I've never heard of it), so it must be something new that they've added. As far as advice.......It's HARD work, but if you give it everythinig you've got & this is something you really want- you'll make it. I've lost a lot of friends in the program. They've either failed or quit due to the stress. The best piece of advice I have is don't get behind in your work. They give you TONS of reading & expect you to read everything. Before this semester began- we had to read 40 chapters (I'm not exaggerating- I just checked my syllabus and counted!!!). Make sure you read everyday, even if it's just a little bit. Oh, and don't get caught up the gossip & drama. Sometimes I feel like I'm back in high school. Everyone talks about everyone else. And then you hear about how all of the teachers are "weeding" us out and blah, blah, blah. Just remember- you are there for you and no one else. Don't worry- you'll do GREAT!!

Books for Calhoun Fall Program
Do you have the name of the books that are listed to go w/ the Tabers? If so, I can look at my books and seen what the IBSN is. You buy the Nurse pack from the book store, it's around $60-$70 (I honestly can't remember), but it has everything in there that you will need for your check-offs. It has your syringes, personal protective gear, enema, cathether kit, gloves, normal saline vials, ect.

Books for Calhoun Fall Program
I'm a 3rd semester student and I buy my books wherever I can find them the cheapest. FYI: I made the mistake of buying the "optional" books and never opened them. I never buy the optional books anymore unless during the semester, I see that I will actually use them.

Ironing your Scrubs
I starch and iron my clinical uniform & "quickly" iron my scrubs- takes 2-3 min. I don't have extra time in my day for ironing but If I can't find 2min in my day - then somethings wrong!

Anyone applying for Calhoun ADN- fall 09?
OK, here goes........ You asked if I was "enjoying" it? The answer is NO!!!!! Let me explain: (and remember, this is just my opinion): Nursing school is probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my life!!!! In orientation, the teachers tell you in a "joking" way to get ready to give up your family, friends and any social life you may have. Well, they aren't joking. I have always been a straight A student. I am still making A's in nursing, but I study 7 days a week and on the weekend I sometimes study 10 hrs a day. There is tons of reading, lots of paperwork......it's just always something. For my anniversary- my husband wanted to take me out to dinner, but I just didn't have time.....I needed to study. So, instead we ordered take-out. There are a lot of sacrifices that you have to make. As long as you are willing to do that- you'll do fine. Also, the types of tests in nursing school is completely different than anything I've ever taken. Normally in a class, you memorize the information, but in nursing you have to UNDERSTAND the information and then apply it to different situations. Some of the teachers are great and some........well, some shouldn't be teaching anymore. A lot of things are unorganized, but you just have to go w/ the flow. I am so stressed out- there have been several days I've broken down and cried and asked myself "can I do this"? In the past few months, I've actually started having panic attacks. I've been meaning to go to my doctor, but just can't seem to find the time!! Last semester we lost alot of people. One of my good friends failed by .5 points. I don't like nursing school but can't wait to become a nurse. You just have to remember that school is just a stepping stone. I'm not telling you this to scare you- I'm just being honest. But, like I said school is temporairy. And as hard as this is- I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!! Good luck and I'm sure you will do great!!!!

help me with performance anxiety
Well, I'm starting 2nd semester of nursing this monday, so I really don't have that much experience to share with you- but I know exactly how you feel. I get so nervous when the instructors are watching me. My hands start shaking and it seems like the more I try to get them to stop shaking the more they shake Last semester during my skills check-off for IM, SQ & ID, my instructor asked me, "why are your hands shaking", of course this made me feel like an idiot and I just smiled and said "I'm nervous". Anyway, there are several posts on these forums that give suggestions on how to "get a handle on your nerves". I just keep telling myself that the more we practice our skills, the more confident we will become........Hope this makes you feel a little better :nuke:
