  1. i have a quick question for those who are working full time. i am a RN and i am not currently working (by choice). i miss nursing and hope to go back someday. my problem is childcare. i want to go back to bedside nursing (working 12 hour shifts) but my husband is a CRNA and works 24 hour shifts and some day shifts. what are childcare arrangements like for those who are working? we have no local family and even if i work days, what do i do with my child at 6am when we would leave for work or after 7 when i finally get off....??
  2. My cousin was in one of the first anesthesia classes at Barry and it is an excellent school. Good luck to you!
  3. I have several friends that when in anesthesia school they were in their early 40s. I think in nursing age and experience are valued.
  4. So, where did you decide?
  5. I don't think so. I am a nursing student and my husband is a nurse and I have never heard that nursing is seasonal here. Jacksonville is not a tourist town so our city does not get the influx of the eldery traveling south for the winter.
  6. I am learning about nursing diagnoses and care plans. I am wondering if they are used in actual clinical practice? They seems to be labor intensive and fairly worthless in my opinion. I have worked in several psych hospitals and they were not used. Are they used in medical facilities?

  9. No. A friend has his BS in Chem from FSU and just graduated from FGCU's anesthesia program. He is an ADN grad as well.

  11. I was just accepted to the Second Degree Accelerated Program at UNF and JU. Thanks for your response!
  12. Yes I just found out that UNF offers the program. I will enroll in a community college like SJRCC or FCCJ & take the pre reqs.

St Luke's is probably the best hospital in Jax....affiliated with the Mayo clinic. Shands does not always have a good reputation. Baptist opened a new hospital in south Jacksonville. I live in the soutside/Baymeadows/Deerwood area and love it. Many Family members and friends are nurses.

  15. I have a couple of questions. In Florida (where I live) what is GN? I know this is a graduate nurse but does one become a GN upon graduation or once they have passed the NCLEX? Can you still be GN if you fail the NCLEX? How long do you have to be a GN? Thanks
  16. I thought I would post here for imput from current nursing students. I am applying for admission to the accelerated second degree nursing programs at both JU and UNF for the summer semester 2005. Does anyone have info on these programs? What are the interviews like at either school? What sorts of questions do they ask? How intense is the program? I have a friend that graduated the accelerated program at Auburn and loved it. To current JU students how do you afford JU?
  17. i think it's great you want to do psych nursing. i am a licensed mental health counselor and am returning to school for my bsn. i am going to try my hand at something other than psych. to be sucessful you have to have a strong personality, be assertive, and you must be sure of yourself. i should add that i work on an adolescent inpatient unit and its quite volatile. you have to rely on your techs a great deal. there is a risk you'll get hurt (either assaulted or during a take down). psych will either be your niche or it won't be. i have nurses that would never consider any other type of nursing.
  18. Thanks for the responses. We have actually decided against moving to Missouri. After visit Cape Girardeau we decided we'd be happier elsewhere. I am used to a larger city atmosphere and would likely get very bored very fast there. Thanks for the help!
  19. I have a friend who is a nurse and was able to obtain his license with a felony charge (drugs or something). He was first a nurse in NY and NJ and he had to jump threw a lot of hoops for Florida but was eventually licensed. Hope this helps.
  20. i am looking at the rn program at SOUTHEAST MISSOURI HOSPITAL COLLEGE OF NURSING. does anyone have any information about this program? is it accredited? if i already hold a master's degree and have taken the pre-reqs how long will the program take? how long is the program generally speaking? is this a diploma program or an associates? thanks for you help.....i had been planning on going to an accelerated program in florida and my nurse anesthetist student hubby is looking at jobs in cape girardeau!! while we are at it....any info about cape girardeau?
  21. i also suffer from chronic daily headaches and migraines. i have seen a neurologist and a neuropthamologist (sp) at the mayo clinic. amerge didn't work...midrin did for a while then I started to get rebound headaches b/c i took it too often. at one point i was self medicating with excedrin everyday. i have taken topomax in an effort to prevent daily headaches. i am currently taking avapro preventatively. i now take maxalt when i wake up in the middle of the night with a migraine. i should add that i have absolutely cut ALL caffeine out of my diet and rarely take over the counter medication. i still get headaches but i can say with certainty that they are not caused by me taking too much medication or intaking too much caffeine. maxalt is expensive but works.............. eventually.
  22. she can attend pre-k at some elementary schools but definitely not kindergarden. you will have to contact which ever elem schools you are zoned for (once you find an apartment). if not you would have to put her in a private pre-k or a daycare. i think fsu has a daycare on campus but i don't have details b/c i don't know anyone who has used it. it used to be located on woodward i think. not too far from the nursing bld if i am not mistaken....but its been a long time since i was a student there (graduated in 96). i hope this helps. i hope you get some cool weather while you are up there!!
