  1. We had a patient come into the ER to get an apple removed from his rectum. It ended up actually being an emergency. They ended up taking him to surgery.
  2. When I was a new nursing student another student ,who we will call Mary and myself with the instructor were cleaning a pt up who had had a BM. We would clean the pt but every time we turned them over the pt would have another BM. After about the third time the instructor said, "OK Mary go get a stopper." Mary said, "Stopper OK" and hurries out of the room. The instructor and I were laughing so hard we don't know when she figured out that we didn't really want a stopper.
  3. I once had a pt's daughter ask me to give her Mama a supplasitory. (suppository). I had another pt ask me if she was getting tapassium. (potassium)
  4. I was a relatively new nurse working on a med surg unit. I had just got report and went to the nurses station. The call light went off and I answered it. The voice on the other end said, "My grandmother needs to use the potty chair." When I got to the room I said to the granddaughter, "Can she stand with help?" The granddaughter replied, "She has no legs." Very embarassing.
  5. I've been a LPN for going on 21 years. More money would be a definite plus but I never wanted to take the time away from my family to go back to school. Full time at my facility is three 12 hour days a week now and I love it. It feels like I'm working part time.
  6. I have never been asked whether or not I wanted to precept but I have always been paid for it. Personally I would rather not do it. I don't feel like the compensation is enough. I precepted for years before classes were provided. My methods are still the same.
  7. I have been a LPN for twenty years. My original plan was to go on to school. Instead I got married and had my son. I have always worked. So I never wanted to take the time away from my family to go back to school. They would be supportive and there is not a doubt in my mind that I could do it if I wanted to. The thing is that I don't want to. I am perfectly happy now so that is what I tell people.
  8. I always use a new tubing for each medication. Our policy is to change each tubing q72h. We recap using a new luer lock plug each time we disconnect. Syringe pump tubings however can be flushed with saline between different meds according to the representitive that came to our facility.
  9. In my facility we use the abdomen for heparin injections. I don't usually get many c/o pain with heparin. Some people do c/o burning with the Lovenox injections.
  10. Our hospital has recently changed the phenergan policy. We dilute 12.5mg in 10cc and 25mg in 20cc and inject over 15 or 20 min. We usually use syringe pumps for this. If the pt has a compatible IV fluid running, I use a port away from the site. Some people think the time frame is unrealistic but why take the chance.
  11. Wow my offer is pretty good I guess then. They are offer two dollars more an hour then of course time and a half for all over 40. The thing is they have just started offer RNs an outrageous amount of money for extra shifts. Our lpns are kind of upset that we didn't get a better incentive also for coming in. The answer we got is that they don't "need" lpns right now. This is strange to me since I have been asked to work three times this week and I am on vacation. We don't expect RN pay for working extra just a little better incentive.
  12. I work as a medication nurse on a med surg unit.
  13. Hello everyone! I am new to this board and very excited to be here. I have been a lpn for over twenty years at the same hospital. I was wondering what incentives some of you get for coming in to work on your day off. Thanks for any help you can give me.
