Graduate Nurse, can't find a job
My advice to you is keep your chin up and don't give up. I'm in Philly, just got hired at a hospital downtown and had another job offer up north doing dialysis. I took the job in Philly because the pay was better and was something l was interested in doing. I agree with previous posters as they have given some great advice. If you have friends or family, they may know someone who is a nurse. Obviously since they know you've went to nursing school, your family can help you network, and the nurses they know come crawling out of the woodwork. What I mean is that I had a neighbor who's sister-in-law was vice president of clinical operations at a hospital, I had an uncle who's girlfriend was director of admissions to a nursing home, I had a cousin who was director of nursing at a long term care facility. They didn't offer me jobs but they said they would keep me in mind for open positions. Send out resumes, make cold calls to nurse recruiters, attend job fairs, all of this is great advice. You'll find something, it may not be what you want, but take it for the experience, work a year and you'll get the job that you want.

Trouble with getting a job
Hi, Just wanted to say that by keeping an open mind and pounding the pavement, calling, and PACareerLink, I was able to get about 6 interviews lined up and actually got two job offers....one at Hahnemann in Philly and one in East Stroudsburg for a dialysis company. I ended up taking the Hahnemann job because I live in Bucks County and really didn't want to relocate if I didn't have to. Graduated in May 2010 from Aria Health School of Nursing. My advice for those looking for a job at the moment is don't give up, there are positions out there. Take a look at PACareerLink, in one day, I had 5 calls for interviews all over the state of Pennsylvania. If you can relocate or are willing to relocate, do so. I don't think the market will stay like this for long. I start next month at Hahnemann. Good luck and keep your chin up.

Anyone have a student planner that they love?
Happy New Year everyone!! I have always had a problem with organization until I read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. He helps you get things organized. Now, I use the Franklin-Covey planner. It's expensive but it is well worth it for keeping organized. It has everything that you would need, it cost me about $85 but it is money well spent. Check them out at: www.franklincovey.com Again, Happy New Year and I start NS on Friday!!! Sincerely, B

Any other Frankford Hospital School of Nursing Students Out There Starting in Jan??
Hey y'all, I just wanted to know if anyone else out there is starting at Frankford in January. I am and I just wanted to say Hello to all of you. I cannot wait until then as I have wanted to be a nurse for 15 years now and I have had things happen to get in the way. I'm so excited and happy that there are only 57 days until the first day of class. I hope to hear from all of you. To those of you still in school, good luck the rest of the semester. Take care, B "You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have truly lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love." Henry Drummond

Scared and anxious rolled into one!
Allieinaz, First of all, congrats on your decision to "finish what you started". I was in the same boat as you. At 31, I have decided to go back to school and fulfill the dream I had as a kid to be a nurse. It will be worth it. I just recently got accepted at a hospital school here in PA. I know what you are saying. Other posters have gotten it correct. It's not the high schoolers you have to worry about, it's the nontraditional students like you and me. I think what happens and I know from my own experience...when you are young and in school, you don't take it as seriously as you should(party, hanging out, not studying). Now that I'm older, I kick myself and think about what could have been if I had only stayed in school. I now take school a LOT more seriously and I have a 3.875 GPA to show for it. It's part of the maturing process. I look at others my age who have a college degree and a bigger paycheck and wonder why I dropped out to be with "the one" who didn't turn out to be the one. My wife now has been so supportive and she is ready for the sacrifices that will start in January but she knows in the end we will have a better life. I wish you luck on this adventure and enjoy the ride!!! Take care, B

Is it too late
26 is not too late to start nursing school. I've wanted to be a nurse since I, however, "life" happened and I never made it to clinical part of nursing school. I start nursing school in January at the young age of 31. Never ever give up on this or think it's too late. My older brother who's been a nurse now for almost 11 years was 32 or 33 when he graduated. Sincerely, B

For all of us who are sweating bullets waiting on acceptance/rejection letters...
Hey Y'all, I just wanted to let you know that on Friday I officially got "the letter", I knew that I had gotten in already, but this makes it official. I'm so excited:monkeydance:!!!! Classes start on January 2nd. There is paperwork that has to be back on November 1st. There is paperwork that has to be back on November 19th. Open House on October 30. Shots that I need to get. Tests that I need to have done(TST, twice no less!!) Lots of stuff to do before those deadlines. Orientation in December!! All while working full time and going to school still at night. It's going to be a bumpy ride but well worth it at the end!! For those of you sweating it out, it's been said before, enjoy the ride because the relief you feel at the end of it all is going to be worth it. For those of you who have been rejected more times than you can count, keep your head up and shoulders high. If the desire to make nursing your career is there, then you will do whatever you have to do in order to get into nursing school. There is a fire deep down inside of me that will not go out ever. I've wanted to do this since I was 16 years old but never quite made it this far. I'm 31 now and have had things happen in my life that prevented me from my goal. From here, it is uncharted territory. I'm so happy and proud of myself right now. I have a very supportive family who is proud of me and I have a mother who is watching over me from above and cheers me on. I'm enjoying this high, and know that I still have work to do. Hang in there, everyone who is still waiting. I wish you all luck!!! Sincerely, B:roll

For all of us who are sweating bullets waiting on acceptance/rejection letters...
Hey y'all, I was told a couple of weeks ago that I will be accepted for the Spring '08 semester at my school. The "official" letter will not come for a couple of weeks but I'm so excited, even though, I don't think that it has sunk in yet that I'm going to be a nursing student come January. I'm focused on finishing my community college career with a bang, Algebra and Abnormal Psych. To everyone out there waiting, I've been there but enjoy the journey to that point as much as you will the relief once all has shaken out. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE still waiting. Sincerely, B

Anyone else waiting for "the" letter?
Hi y'all, I just wanted to let everyone know that today I found out that I am going to be accepted into the nursing program at my school starting January 2008. I can't believe how much of a relief this is. I start school at the local community college that has been my home for 3 years now tomorrow. I don't think that it has sank in yet, that I'm going to be a nursing student in January( a short 4 months from now). I've got so much to do and just wanted to share my good news with everyone on this forum. Sincerely, B

Getting Fat in school
I agree with pp. You need to put exercise on your list of things to do daily. If you have a day planner, put that time in your planner and set it in stone, like a meeting or a dr's appt. In other words, make it time that you can't schedule anything else. I haven't started nursing school yet, but over the summer took on a exercise and diet regimen(The Biggest Loser diet) and I've lost about 30 lbs. so far in a couple of months. You just need to stick with it. Good luck to you!!! Sincerely, B

I can't be the only one who thought the TEAS was easy...
I took the TEAS test last month and I got 84.7 and was in the 92nd percentile nationally and 95th percentile in the program. In order to be CONSIDERED for the program, you had to have scored in the 40th percentile nationally. I also have a 3.875 GPA and am hoping to hear if I got in by the end of next month for starting in January 2008. I found the test a lot of basic stuff as a previous poster said one section(Science maybe) had a "draw a circle, and put a square in the circle" type choice question. Also, advice on the science part...make sure you know basic chemical, life, and physical science stuff...one question had to do with physics and I got lost...friction, etc. Good Luck to all who have to take this test!!!! Sincerely, B

College Algebra Fall 2007
I'm also taking College Algebra. My class starts on August 29. I'm OK at Math. It was my worst subject on the TEAS test but it's been awhile since I've had a math class. Sincerely, B

Anyone else waiting for "the" letter?
now our cutoff is September 5 and yours is September 15, but your school can have everything done in less than a month and mine will take like 2 months?? What's up with that??? Doesn't seem right!!! (Just messin' with ya...I just don't want to wait that long to find out!) I am applying to a hospital school in my local area. The "official" deadline(to submit an application) is tomorrow (8/15). However, the deadline to get all paperwork(transcripts, letters of recommendation, TEAS test results, etc) is September 15. The committee does not meet until after September 15 when they will make their final decisions. I will keep everyone posted!! Sincerely, B

Anyone else waiting for "the" letter?
What a long month and a half it's going to be. I keep going through my mind how it's going to be to get the "good" letter and how it would be to get the "bad" letter. Unofficially, I've been told that there is no reason why I would not be accepted based on my academic record(3.875 GPA) and getting in the 92nd percentile on the TEAS, but still I've been rejected by my local community college last year because my ACT score was not on my high school transcript...back then I had a 4.0 and had the right amount of credit hours to get into the program. This school that I applied to has only 75 spaces in their class and I am not greedy, I just want one. This is what I've wanted to do since I was 16 years old and I've just had a few setbacks in that 15 year period since then, but the one thing that I can say to anyone out there who is frustrated and also want to live this nursing dream is never ever give up. Rejection letters, I've had a few, but I've found in my almost 31 years of life, that when one door closes, another one opens. I met the recruiter for the school I just applied to, shortly after I got rejected from the CC. Take care y'all, B

Anyone else waiting for "the" letter?
This was in my email box today around 12:30.... We have received all items needed to review your application for our January 2008 class. We do not make our final decisions until after the paperwork deadline of September 15, 2007. You will be notified of our decision via mail by the end of September. Isn't it exciting?? I can hardly do anything else but think of getting that letter......
