unemployed NP student
I have lots of experience in family care clinics, triage nursing, and in Tele nursing. My background also includes being a CNS in adults/geriatrics. My PMSN will be as an AGNP in primary care, pending graduation and passing my boards in May of 2015. My concern is the only jobs as a RN that I am finding are paying much less than what I was making (work from home) d/t being prn. I live in eastern NC, where the jobs are scarce. Any advice on how to make myself more marketable as a RN? I've been told my resume is impressive, but I don't get many offers. The offers I get are for a 1/3 of what I was making before. I guess I'm frustrated.

unemployed NP student
Any advice for a NP student trying to find a job prn as a RN? I was recently laid off from a job I enjoyed. It fit perfectly with my school and clinical hours. Now I'm on unemployment. The jobs where I get offers are for much less money. It seems I am taking 5 steps back in my nursing career. There are lots of great opportunities, but they are for full time, and the positions don't work with my school schedule. Oh, FYI, I had a government contract position, and the whole department was let go from government cut backs. On the bright side, I graduate in May, 2015!

Master's after 40, is it worth it?
I just turned 49 and completed phase I of my program (ready to take NCLEX). Phase II begins where I work as a RN, but continue with my MSN. This is a 2nd degree for me. I was NOT the oldest in my class. There are grants/financial aid available out there. Many potential employers will pay your financial aid as long as you give them so many years of service. Working with patients is rewarding.

ECU MSN AE 2010
Hi cdcd, I am currently in the AE MSN class now. You can either take the GRE or MAT for admission. We get more clinical hours than the BSN students in one year, so you definitely get experience. Also, once you start working as an RN to gain even more experience, you are required to take 5 graduate courses (all concentrations require these same courses), which is part of phase II. While you are taking those graduate courses, you will then have experience, so you definitely qualify to apply for those concentrations. If you get accepted into the AE MSN, you are in the graduate program. In the late spring, we will tell them which concentration we want to pursue, so this information can be given to the appropriate people for the perspective concentrations. If you have any other questions, I will be happy to try and answer them. The instructors are wonderful, and they want you to succeed. kaystho

ECU MSN-AE Program 2008
Hi, I just got accepted as well for the fall of 2009. Just wondering how your year is going........I have a lot of anxiety, but I'm prepared for the program.

Who wants to play the waiting game with me?
Hi, I also got my acceptance letter from ECU in the mail the 14th of February. I am so excited!

Who is the oldest Nursing Student here?
Hi, I'm in the same situation as you are (47 years old). My problem is getting accepted into any program. My GRE abd Mat scores are not competitive (I attribute this to my age). I graduated Magna Cum Laude, and all of my prerequisites are A's, except for one B. I keep getting denial letters. So I decided to apply to ADN programs around the area. My goal is to become a FNP, but I do not want to graduate with a walker! Regards, Kaystho

Support for those of us who were denied!
Thanks for your post! I was also denied, but I only had my heart set on going to one school. Now, I have many other schools to apply for the next school term. My mom asked me, "why? They need so many nurses out there. Why did you not get accepted?" My MAT score was not competitive enough (according to the school), so I decided to take the GRE. I took the MAT, thinking it was less than an hour exam. Also, my strong points are in Science and Math, and not in English/Liberal Arts. The MAT only had 2 analogies with math questions. Also, I am a Magna Cum Laude graduate, so my GPA was high. But, I was denied. The competition is tough, but I am taking a Prep course to study for my GRE. To those other people who were denied. Open up all your opportunities. If you want to be a nurse, then throw your denial letter away and start another application for another school.

Doctoral degree to become an NP???
Hi, I'm thinking about many options: Accelerated MSN/BSN, Traditional BSN, etc. My ultimate goal is to become a FNP. Do you know if you really have to wait a year after you become an RN to apply for the MSN/FNP program? I am 46 years old, and I would like to graduate with my MSN/FNP one day.

Accelerated programs for BSN?
What do you think about the program? I am interested in applying to Accelerated programs, and WSSU is on my list. I have read on this site where WSSU has had some problems. The best thing about WSSU is that they start in January, instead of traditional Accelerated classes, which are in August. I do not want to have a contract, and I did contact the school and said there maybe other options for me. I live 5 hours away, and I want to go home. Also, I looked on the website for WSSU, and wonder about the weekend schedule. Do you have some time or breaks to see your family? Since I live so far away, I would like to see my family sometimes. Thanks for your help.

Hi, I read your post, and I am in the same situation. What did you ever do? I hate to have to wait another semester just to find a CNA course.

Accelerated programs for BSN?
Thanks for the information! I was actually considering WSSU for the accelerated program. Now, I guess I will look at the traditional BSN programs. My goal is to get my MSN!

ECU Alternate Entry MSN Program Fall 2008
Congratulations on your acceptance. I did not get accepted, and I was pretty upset (I did get an interview, though). My MAT was not competitive enough, and the recommendation was to take the GRE. This is a bummer since someone at ECU told me the MAT was similar to the GRE. The GRE is more geared to people who have more skills with Science and Math, which I have. The MAT is more for students in the liberal arts. I can reapply next year, but I am considering other options like Duke and Chapel Hill. All the schools pretty much want the same prerequisites, so this is a good thing. I should have applied at other schools, and this was a learning lesson for me! Good luck to all you ECU AE MSN students!

ECU Alternate Entry MSN Program Fall 2008
When I called the graduate school, I was told they would not interview everyone. I was fortunate to get a interview, but have not heard anything yet. I'm waiting for my envelope in the mail.

ECU Alternate Entry MSN Program Fall 2008
Hi, I just got interviewed last Wednesday. I had my application in last November, but only now have heard from them. They told me it will be a few weeks before I hear anything from my interview. I am crossing my fingers!

Congratulations! I am studying for this dreaded exam. Those "SAT" words frighten me, as well as the geometry. Any advice for me?
