Its True about Nurses and Tickets
I'd been reading on here about nurses feeling that they may be less likely to be ticketed if the officer knew they were a nurse. I've never experienced that myself but I've never mentioned my occupation when I was pulled over. Think I've still had my fair share of "warnings" instead of tickets tho. Anyway, I had a policeman come in this morning to get his flu shot, so I asked him if there was any truth to it. He said yes! He said he would not ticket a nurse because of the close relationship between our two jobs. Said it with a smile and wink! Who knew. A very nice perk to have.

The Cap.......
I work with a nurse that to this day wears a cap, tho it is not required. Her rationale is...everyone here wears scrubs (public health) the WIC staff, the cleaning staff, adm, everyone. No one who comes in for services can tell who the nursing staff is. So she wears her cap and white scrubs. It sets her, as an actual RN, apart from everyone admin. has "looking the part". She's a great nurse and looks very professional!

Immunizations for CNA's?
Typically what need is a TD, MMR and the Hep B series. The hep B is a series of 3, but you don't have to have all three done before you start. You can get the first one and are considered "up to date" until the second one is due, which is one month later. The last is due six months after the first. You may have already had the series, depending on your age, but you'll have to have proof. Same with the MMR. Try your local Health Dept. Ours will allow you to be billed and you can pay whatever you can afford monthly, as long as you pay something. You may also need a PPd.

Becoming a Community Health Nurse
I am a Community Health Nurse, have been for the last 10 years. I have an ADN, there is no BSN requirement for public health, at least not in my state. Public Health is changing alot, I recently made the decision to return to acute care related to those same changes. When I started in public health the job was largely "in the field".....we'd go out and do disease investigation, teach classes at daycares and restuarants about handwashing, have field clinics for immunizations where ever we felt there was a need, do home visits for high risk newborns. We worked 8-5 M-F. Those were the days. Nurses had alot of autonomy and alot of responsibility. We knew our public well and worked with families, schools and community where ever the need was. Not so much anymore. Public Health just isn't what it used to be. Now Nurses are not allowed to leave the clinic, ever. We no longer do any disease investigation or go out to homes to provide tx, blood draws etc. Now we stay in the clinic, which has become nothing more than a free clinic. We do half of what we used to. The hours are also changing, no longer the M-F and no evenings that you take the lower pay to get. I don't know if this is happening in public health all over, or just here, but its sad. It is about as stress free as Nursing gets tho.

Relocating
I honestly don't know what new grads are getting, but I'd have to think it would be better than 25 an hour. I know of one new grad here who is making just about three dollars an hour less than me, and again, public health makes much less than acute care.

Relocating
Hello! I'm an RN living in Queen Creek! The salary quoted was way low. I work for public health and make 34 an hour. Hospital nurses would make considerably more I imagine. Why would you want to work all the way out in Phoenix? Banner Desert, much closer to QC has a wonderful NICU. I believe Chandler Regional (also much closer to QC) also has a level 111 NICU. Because of the slump housing is in out here you can buy a house at a fantastic price right now. Best of luck to you!

Glen Beck's hospital experience
Sounds to me like Mr. Beck was being a bit of a drama queen and expecting special treatment at the ER. We don't have the "big nurse's" side of the story, but my guess would be that his assessment of the patient and the way the patient was acting were not matching up. (can make it from the parking lot to the desk, but can't sit down) That behavior ....."I'm the sickest one here, take me first" is difficult to deal with and gets old.

Flu after Immunization????
If you get sick after getting your flu shot you were most likely already incubating something, the shot cannot give you the flu. Also like another poster said, the flu shot doesn't offer protection against every flu out there, but it does offer protection against what's supposed to be "this season's" bad flu. It changes every year.

Work and Full Time School??? YIKES
I went to nursing school when I was 32. I was going thru a divorce and needed a way to support my family. I LOVED nursing school, but those were hard years. I had a 2,6,8 and 11 year old at home. They loved to help me "practice". They'd lay in the bed while I made it around them, did flash cards with me, etc. etc. I worked too, so always felt my kids got less of me than they should have, but it all turned out okay. After graduation our quality of life improved dramatically, we were able to do things we'd never have been able to do had I not gone to nursing school. (like pay the rent!) Seriously, we were able to afford things like Christmas, back to school shopping, vacations....things I would not have been able to afford as a single parent if I were not an RN. Now I have one L&D nurse, one daughter who's about to start nursing school, one son who wants to be a Dr. but thinks he'll go to nursing school first so he can work and earn a good salary while in school, (he's a straight A college kid right now) and one firefighter/EMT. The hard years were worth it and I'd do it again. You can do it, just keep your eyes on the goal!!

Why dont YOU wear a helmet??
I ride a little Vespa and even tho its only a scooter, I wouldn't dream of riding without my helmet. I initially had the little 3/4 helmet that Vespa makes, but my son talked me into the full face kind. He's an EMT/firefighter and says he's seen his share of faces left on the road. Its heck on the hair, but it keeps the bugs out and my family happy.
