Thank you for the ideas, these are all great!

Hello all! I am working toward my MSN Admin degree and am required to do a quality improvement project in my current workplace. I'm a school nurse in a small, rural district (K-12 with about 800 students) and am struggling to come up with a topic, so I thought I'd bounce the idea off of you guys :) In the past, I've done projects over office visits (i.e. reducing unnecessary visits, etc.) and improving immunization compliance rates. Anyone have any ideas, or have examples of QI they have completed in their schools? Thanks!
  3. I had a similar situation... teacher brought down 2 students on that had nearly identical linear bruises on their forearms and insides of their elbows. The teacher was freaking out thinking they had some weird contagious illness. The students swore up and down they had no idea what happened. Turned out they were hickeys from sucking on their own arms.

I completely understand. We've had parents blasting us on Facebook, too. I just think it's ridiculous that we, the nurses, get blamed for allowing this to happen. We can only do so much... And as long as we are following policy, we are doing our job, regardless what the parents think. Besides, unless I have lice and rubbing my head on students, it's not my fault they have it [emoji38]

I've been cursed with both this week I'm ready for summer vacation LOL

I could have written this myself! And to top things off, our local newspaper published a front page article about lice in our district, saying we had 5 "confirmed" cases... Um, know for a fact those weren't confirmed by me or administrators because they called and we declined comment for privacy reasons. And seriously, out of nearly 800 students, I wouldn't really call 5 cases an outbreak or newsworthy. *rolls eyes*
  7. Don't worry. With all the body fluids we encounter, they'll be colorful soon enough.
  8. HAHAHA, thanks guys, I needed a laugh! "Doc said he's an ass burger" ROFL!

  10. Thanks everyone, I will definitely keep you posted (I go in this week to do all the paperwork/pre-employment screening, but assuming that goes well, I start the hospital orientation/training on the 15th! I am so excited!!) RNmom6 - I am starting out on PP... I was asked in my interview if I would be okay with crosstraining in L&D and Nursery (which I was like heck yeah lol), so I am assuming sometime in the future I will be in L&D, too.
  11. I think it sounds promising as well... hopefully everything will come through soon and the job will be yours :)
  12. Just curious how your interview went? Good news, I hope
  13. Absolutely!! I am sooo thankful to you all. I went over and over the info you guys gave me, to the point where I was hardly even nervous when I arrived for the interview (and if you knew me IRL, you'd know that's an amazing feat! LOL I'm like the queen of nerves! ). I think I was very lucky, too, b/c my interviewer was very laid back and we sort of just chit-chatted, which made me so much more comfortable... Thanks again everyone!
  14. The interview went great this morning! I was basically told the job is mine, I just have to wait for HR to do their thing... I am SOOO excited!!

Thanks Eric :) I was pretty sure it was a long shot, because I wasn't sure of the other S/S... always welcome a learning opportunity though!

Is there any chance the infant could have osteogenesis imperfecta? (Sorry if I am way off the mark It was the first thing that popped in my head when I read about the multiple skull fractures...)
  17. Thank you all for the luck (I'll take as much as I can get ), and thank you to misschiatia and twentytenRN for the wonderful suggestions! I will definitely jot down those questions to help prepare myself :) Thanks again everyone! I will let everyone know how it goes.
  18. I am sooooo excited (and equally nervous lol) that I have finally landed an interview on the Postpartum/Mother-Baby unit I originally applied for 5 months ago. The position had been filled, but another opened up so I applied for it this past Friday and got a call this morning from the unit director asking me to come in Wednesday! I am unsure what type of interview it will be (behavioral, group, etc.), so that adds to my anxiety a bit... My last interview at this facility was just me and the director (very laid back), but that was a few years ago. I have my fingers crossed that it is the same way now. Just thought I would let everyone know and ask for any pointers anyone might have... i.e. questions I may be asked, questions I should ask, any sort of advice that would help me prepare would be highly appreciated! Thanks everyone!
  19. hehe, that's awesome LOL
  20. haha, this is soooo true!
  21. The hospital that hosted us during clinicals doesn't do elective abortions, but as others have stated, you never know what you will see... a fellow student of mine was doing her rotation on the GYN unit, and had a patient that was in for a cerclage (if I remember correctly, it's been awhile!), and the patient delivered w/o warning... from what I understand, the patient told her she felt something and when she checked her, she found the baby on the bed I was never so glad to have been assigned to a different unit in my life.
  22. This is why I asked, because that was what I thought as well... but when I did have a DNR patient code as a student, I hurried to the hall and flagged down another nurse and told her what was happening... she said "girl, you don't walk out all calm, you start hollering for help!" So, hence, how I got confused... didn't think we would NEED to call for help on a DNR patient, but evidently they wanted me to After I graduated, I got a job in that facility, but never ran into that situation again (only lost 1 other DNR patient during that time, and the doc just happened to be in the room when it happened). Thanks for helping clear up the confusion :)
  23. hahaha, well personally, I prefer the word "lochia" over "mucous" and "phlegm" LOL
  24. I need to ask a spin-off of this one (which I should know the answer to, :smackingf but please just excuse me, it's been awhile LOL)... what if the cardiac arrest pt is a DNR? Do you still call for help? Had this happen to me in nursing school and I still am not real sure about "proper" procedure in that situation.
