Accusation of Med error
7pm to 7am is not a 22 hour shift. Anyways, I have never met a nurse who hasn't made a med error.
- What else can be done about a nurse sleeping on duty??

Long term care medical director is a jerk!
I as the nurse dealing with this would chart " Dr. Ahole advised of laceration, per policy. Dr. Ahole said " I don't care, don't bother me at night". No further orders received.

What are they teaching?
I just find it sad. As a student I was told that it will be hard, I will be working weekends and holidays, I will not know everything fresh out of school. I think these new nurses are getting the short end of the stick. They truly believe that it's going to be easy, great, and fun. That's what they've been told. It's just sad.

What are they teaching?
I have an honest question. I'm not being a old crabby nurse. Honest question here... What are nursing schools teaching? So many posts of new grads that didn't think nursing would be stressful or hard. Nursing is a very stressful job. Are these schools actually teaching our future nurses that nursing is Not a stressful job? If so, they are doing a disservice to our profession. I feel bad for these new nurses that seem to truly be shocked that it is a stressful profession.

Pregnant RN working in LTC
More than 25 years ago I was a pregnant CNA. No hoyer lifts or things like that. We actually lifted residents. I worked until I went into labor with both my kids. They are now 32 and 28. They came out fine, I was fine. I had the ok from my doctor for both. I’ve been a nurse for 26 years now (in the same LTC center) I think you and baby will be fine ! By the way, congratulations on your pregnancy!

Why do RNs choose to work in nursing homes?
Believe it or not, but some nurses enjoy LTC. For some of us there is no other place we would even consider.

Nursing shortage is BS
I guess I must work in a pretty good facility. Over 20 years there and only 1 nurse lost her license. She was caught diverting narcotics, then refused any treatment. I do wish all nurses the best. We all find our place somewhere. Just was trying to give an option for nurses trying to find a job. Have a great night everyone!

Nursing shortage is BS
The nursing shortage is in LTC. The sad thing is that a lot of nurses feel that LTC is beneath them or that they will lose their skills. Both false. All LTCs are begging for RNs, LPNs and CNAs.

What was your first job as a new graduate?
I started in LTC, and within a few years will retire- from the same facility! I love the craziness of it and have learned so much over the years.. I now take care of the "kids" of folks I took care of years ago. I work in a very small town and wouldn't trade this for anything. Even when I'm burned out and ready to give up, I keep on keeping on!

One more day closer to retirement
Every day at work is one more day closer. Doing my best, that's what I do. Counting the time... that's also what I do!

What was nursing like in the year of 2000?
I worked nights on New Year's Eve, going from 1999 into 2000. We had flood lights and emergency kits. This is very small town! We had no computers, a lot less paperwork and ALOT more time with patients and actually doing nurse work! Now it's all about documentation.

Patient's who STINK
Vicks under your nose and a mask. It works. I've done this for decades.

I found a way to avoid HIPAA violation!
When at work you must stay off ALL social media. Leave personal cell phones in the locker room or out of reach. After work, leave work at work.

RN skilled nursing facility
My reply was not to offend you. I understand that this is what you were told. I was merely trying to make a point that LPNs are nurses too, just different nurses than RNs. It isn't a competition between the two, but we must respect each other and work together. I wish you the best in your career, and again- I did not mean to offend.

RN skilled nursing facility
Nurses don't have to do med pass because they have techs and LPNs for that??? Wow. So what is a LPN?

How do you deal with Emotional Abuse?
I am not seeing "emotional abuse" here. The violent outbursts could have to do with diagnosis. Some residents have family that never come-but for a reason. Had a son once tell us not to bother him until his mom was dead, and to not expect much from him then. Found out after she died that she was physically and sexually abusive to her kids. Not every old person is a sweet old lady or kind old gentlemen. Not all family members are mean for not visiting or even caring.
-
How do you keep your LVN job?
I no longer believe you are a nurse- in any way, shape, or form. A LPN doesn't delegate to a RN. It's a chain of command thing. At least in the 20 plus years of me being a nurse.
-
Struggling, am I a crappy nurse?
Nope. That's life. The last chapter of the book of life is death. You were doing your job.

Tips for new RNs
Do NOT look down on LPNs or CNAs or anyone, and NEVER say "that's not how we did it in school"!
-
'My Patient died' Facebook post
Why would you feel the need to put that on social media?
-
CNA termination
In my state, A CNA doesn't have a license. They have a certificate. Probably can't lose your license if you don't have a license. 2 weeks of experience and you already know everything. I'm surprised you got that long of an orientation in LTC if you all ready know it all.
-
RN to LPN
Exactly! LPN is not a consilation prize. Walk a decade or two in my shoes.
-
LTC nurses having to do CNA work all day
Your CNAs are allowed to come to work an hour late?? In my 25+ years of being a LTC nurse I have never heard of that. I would leave.

What nursing specialties do you admire most?
I admire nurses that are or about ready to retire from nursing. The specialty really doesn't matter in the big picture of life. What matters is that nurses do what they enjoy and are happy at. None of us are better than the other. We are all needed, because no matter what specialty we choose there will always be nurses who wouldn't or couldn't do it. I admire nurses in general. We are over worked, underpaid, but we go back each day. At the end of the day if you put all the BS aside from a bad shift, we still go back!
