hi, it's nice to see someone your age thinking about the future, and be narrowed down to two areas at that. i found it interesting you are between nursing and graphic design since they are fairly different. right now, it might be difficult for you to choose so i thought i'd offer a few similarities and differences. i am in nursing and my husband is an architect. similarities - people/client interaction, use of technology, creativity, critical thinking, decent math skills differences - work hours, pay, dealing with 'goo' :), scrubs vs. business attire, exposure to biohazardous material, length of program (depending on your area), interest in disease processes, many areas of specialty, tons of job demand i love nursing and have found it to be very rewarding so far, and i haven't even graduated yet! i know you weren't necessarily looking for this kind of reply but i thought i'd offer my thoughts for you to take or leave. good luck with whatever you choose. have a great day! sharla

Hi Christine, I remember you when I first joined allnurses. You went to Shaydside right? :)

recently, my instructors tried journaling instead of care plans. we would describe the patho for the patient and then journal about our day including what intervention we did and why. this was easier for most students because we were not conforming to a set guideline, such as a careplan template. instead, we could 'free write' bakcing it up with facts to prove we know what we are doing.

hello, you can find a lot of information at shadyside's website. http://www.upmc.com/healthcareprofessionals/professionals/nurses/shadysideschoolofnursing/ their program is an rn diploma program so there is not any prereq. due before you are accepted. but i would recommend taking as many non-nursing courses as possible to help lighten your course load when you do start school. you can transfer in a&p 1&2, micro, logic, and nutrition. just make sure if you take a&p that they were both taken at the same institution or they can't except them. also you can't take a&p 1 somewhere else and then continue a&p 2 once you are accepted. make sense? lol anyway, if you have more questions feel free to ask or pm me. sharla sharla busser, na 7f neuro step down upmc presbyterian

Hello, I took the exam last year and did fine. I purchased the Nursing School and Allied Health Entrance Exam book by Arco and I looked at everything not just the nursing school section. The allied health section has good questions in it that I felt were helpful on the exam. Science will probably your toughest section unless you feel comfortable, but either way you should do fine. Just look at it a little everyday until the test and you will do great. Sharla

I researched my area for all the nursing schools and what kind of programs they had. Since I already have a Bachelors in another field, money was a deciding factor for me. The diploma program I applied to provided tuition assistance in the form of a work commitment after I graduate. This worked out great for me, because I planned on working in my area anyway. Also, I was told that it was a great school by students that go there and the NCLEX pass rates were high. It was the only school I ended up applying to and I got in.

school of acceptance: upmc shadyside pre-nursing science gpa: 4.0 pre-nursing cumulative: won't know until dec. 15th i only have two non-nursing classes finished before school. nutrition and logic. i know for sure i have an a in nutrition but not entirely sure about logic. also, i already have a bs degree (in education) with a 3.5 (cum laude at my school). good luck to everyone!

i received my letter wednesday, nov. 14th, 2007 for upmc shadyside school of nursing diploma program. i start feb. 25th, 2008! :balloons:congrats to everyone!

Hey! I just retook the entrance exam last Wed. I passed all but science the first try and then took Biology at CCAC to remediate. I am hoping to hear this week about my scores then I will send in my application for Spring 08. I am going to choose full-time. After reading a few posts, I see you got in for fall. Congrats! Hi! I took it May 4th. Two weeks ago! I am hoping to receive something in the mail soon. Some of the vocabulary words were difficult. The math was fine and some of the science seemed tough. I didnt get to review the science as much as I wanted to. Unfortunately, if I didn't pass then I wont have enough time to take a remediation course and the test again before the application deadline. So we will see what happens. I do feel postive about the test, especially since I learned it goes by the 75th percentile. For the last two days, I have been in Salem and Northside hospital in Ohio with a family member and watching the nurses made me feel even more positive about my career choice. They touch so many peoples lives in just one shift. It's amazing! The world needs more nurses though, everyone knows that! I hope I can be a part of it!

That doesn't sound to bad. I'm very excited about nursing school. Do you have any summer plans involving nursing? I would really like to work in a hospital over the summer, but it seems like getting hired at a full time position is going to be tough (it offered training-no exp. needed). I would have applied to a part-time position but the prereq. said previous nursing assistant experience strongly preferred. If I can't find something I will definitely volunteer at the hospital.

hello everyone! i sent my form in for the pre-entrance exam today! i will be taking the test may 4th. i printed the specimen questions sheet to see how the questions are set up. it doesn't look to bad. i'm going to review as much natural science as i can so it is fresh in my mind. does anyone remember how much time was given for each section? also, i applied to a nursing assistant job for the summer and clearly stated that i plan on attending nursing school in the fall at shadyside. do any of you know how long the training is to be a nurse assistant? i felt this would help me get acquired to the nursing atmosphere and i could learn by watching. take care and god bless, sharla
