On Meet the Nation on 12/26/02, Dr. Phil said " Nurses are the backbone on the medical profession". I like that man's attitude! :) :)

Hello - What state are you from?
Great State of Maine. Live 1 hour from the mountains, 1 hour from the coast, 1 hour from New Hampshire and the White Mountains, 2 hours from the Canadian Maritime provences, near the lakes..... no better area to be. We don't have earthquakes, hurricaines, mud slides, or major forest fires, just a little snow for much to long a Winter.... I can handle it

What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?
Yesterday a girl came if because the ACRYLIC nail had cracked. It was just starting to get into her real nail, no pain. Next thing you know they will be coming in for pedicures!!! :rotfl: Where I used to work we had a female take an ambulance to the ED for belly pain, exam done (neg), felt better, stated she was hungry, was fed and several hours later walked a short distance to the cinema in time for the movie to start. That's what you can do if you don't have cab fare for both ways I guess.

Would you let your kid ride a MOTORCYCLE ???
Yes I would, but then I ride myself. Yes I have crashed, caused by a trucker, and know that anyone who says it can't happen to them is dreaming. Bikers know that "There are only two types of bikers, ones who have gone down and ones who will". Maturity is number one. If the child is irresponcible in other aspects of their life then they will be on a bike, or a car. Education should be started early and be ongoing. The last thing we need on the road in any vehicle is a immature lunatic. Lastly make them pay for it themselves. They will appreciate it and take better care. Young people who buy "crotch-rockets" often find they can't afford the insurance and have to sell them. Safety also means proper riding attire. Leathers are not for the look but for safety. I was saved by the helmet and know that helmets are a must. I will gladly show mine with pictures to prove the point. Motorcycling can be a wonder family affair shared by all, either as passenger or on their own. It's a great way to see great scenery and "You meet the nicest peple on a Honda". Just remember to be wise, wary, and ride safe. HELMETS HELMETS HELMETS BIKERNURSE (1800cc 2003 Honda Goldwing and ED RN for 25+ years)

Stupid People Award
Elderly single male who was lonely and used a vacum cleaner on his member, turned it on and when removing it after it was swollen caused a lot of tissue damage. Why do you think it is called EUREKA !!

Telephone Advice
I love it when they describe their rash and want me to identify it and tell them the treatment. We do not give advise over the phone, but for the "my husband has crushing chest pressure/is unresponsive on the floor" we tell them to call an ambulance and come right in.

Drug Seeker Stories
Several years ago I had a male come in for something to calm him down as his parents had been in an mva, dad was dead and mother critical in a hospital in Pa. MD ordered inj valium, yes he did have a driver. While waiting the 20 mins he asked for directions to a hospital 20 mins away "so he could go tell his aunt who was hospitalized there". I smelled a skunk. After he left called the other hospital and said that he may be coming. I also called area hospitals and found that he had been to the one closest to his home, 45 mins away, and got drugs; then the hospital 30 mins away, and got drugs; then the hospital across town, and also got drugs, prior to coming to mine. All of this just travel time between visits. Yes he did go to the last hospital after leaving me, and did not get any drugs :) I talked to the ED MD and the police were called, he was arrested, indited by the grand jury after my testimony, and served one year in Maine state prison. Also there had been no accident and the state police had talked to the "dead" father just a few days before grand jury. There was no trial, he plead guilty, and the DA said he would make no deals as he had RN/MD's to testify. The charge was getting drugs by deception. After getting out he was back to the same thing, same hospitals. Died shortly after getting out of prison from a mva with lots of pill bottles in his car. (Also I had been warned to watch out for him as he was not a nice guy and may be after me. I did not live in the town of the hospital.) Yea reap what you sow. Court isn't always a fun place to spend your time, but very necessary at times. If we take a stand and it is know, perhaps it will help. There are programs to help people with drug problems, and I support those that kick their habits, but not those who are just law breakers and liers. :angryfire

Relocation Info?
Maine is a great state to live and bring up a family. There are still the urban problems, but much less in number. If you are lookin g for Neuro than you are looking at Maine Med(Portland), Central Maine Medical Center(Lewiston), or Eastern Maine Med (Bangor). I know CMMC best and it is a good place to work, you may find the money less that where you were, but the wages are about equal at these hospitals. I work in a more rural area, we are associated with CMMC. Check their website for jobs at any of their hospitals. http://www.cmhc.org Remember that the rural hospitals have their own positives, such as no being a number to others and being able to be involved. :chuckle The Summers here are great and the winters can be long, but if you can't take the winters, you don't deserve the Summers! :chuckle

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners
My understanding is that unless you are "on staff" as allied medical staff the doctor still has to see the patient for the medical screening exam (mse)(EMTALA) part. What happens at our rural hospital where I am the only SANE and on unofficial call 24/7, is that I come in and do the total exam using the state supplied kit. After that the doctor comes in to see the patient, reviews options re additional lab test, meds, morning after pills, and a quick mse and or course will care for wounds which require suturing or fractures, etc if needed. The patient has an oportunity to ask any questions and the doctors here are great. "Thank God your here" is often said when I arrive. Because the forensics are done by me the doctor doesn't get called in to court and there name is not on the forms which deal with the collection of evidence. As SANE we get more training in forensics and exams than the doctors get in med school, one of the doctors has said. In Maine we do not do the exams unless they are 15 years, although I come in for teens to do the evidence collection and assist the doctor with the pelvic exam. I saw 9 patients last year and 5 so far this year. As we know many are never reported and don't ever make it to the ED.

Anyone else here have wide feet? Need comfortable shoe recs please!
I have 10 1/2 wide feet, am 5'8" tall and ample size. I have had plantar fasciitis and it was recommended that I try SAS (San Antonio Shoe Co.) as as they have extra padding for the pounding we give our feet. The ones I wear have # D4603355 / Free Spirit on the tongue and come in 1/2 sizes, mens, and womens, and white, brown, tan, and black. I bought a pair up here in Maine in July and paid $100. Not cheap but what can you do, when they get too worn, they become my home shoes and I get another pair for work. If you get the recept to say "nurses shoes" your tax man will have something to work with also. Good luck.
