"I Narcanned Your Honor Student"
Oh for Pete's sake. Let me tell you something, young and naive nursing student. Nothing pisses off nurses more that high and mighty students that get all judgy and condescending. You are allowed to think this stuff as we all did as young nursing students. But the smart ones learned to keep their mouth shut because they knew that as an inexperienced nurse in a world of horrors It is best to keep silent until you really know how it is. And also, you had better learn to laugh really quick because there's a lot a horrible sad situations out there and if you don't laugh you will get burned out really quick

I Don't Get the Anxiety Part of Nursing
Wow, allnurses.com, you have really started to go down a path of ******, negative, insensitive trash you call post worthy. Are you at a loss for good writers or are ******, holier-than-thou nurses the only ones writing for you?? Go ahead, keep it up, give nurses a bad name. Keep forgetting your manners. Keep the negative and ****** articles alive. I keep following with the hopes that it will stop. SMH.

Would you call in because you didn't get any sleep?
Ahhhh.. the "sick" debate. I am reminded of how some people feel as though one should be close to death before calling in sick. We as nurses do not have a job where we can just "downshift" and take it easy that day because we are sick. Our patients set the tone of how busy our day will be. Therefore, if one has lost sleep the night before and feels as if they cannot function up to par then they should call in sick. Let me point out to everyone that a "Sick day" can be for physical, mental or emotional illness. As long as one does not act irresponsibly and stay up too late, party too long, etc there is absolutely nothing wrong with calling in sick. And as long as one does not have a pattern of this sort of thing, what the big deal?

Self inflicted
We see soooo many stupid things where I work... This guy wants to get rid of a mole in his yard. So he dropped a stick of dynamite in the hole, put a board over it and then stood on the board. Lost his legs. This other guy tried to fix the jam in his wood chipper. Yep... stood on top of it and jumped up and down. Wiered though.. didn't lose any legs but had a huge I mean HUGE wound from his flank down his leg. Lucky he was a very fat guy. Then there is the lady that packed her leg in dry ice (took a lot of pain meds to deal with the pain). Her wish came true when she had to have it amputated, and then would go to amputee support group and cheerfully talk about her (self inflicted) amp with the poor accident victims. Sad.. she really was a sick woman. I could go on and on and on!!!

Can you believe this???
This is why some floors have a high turn over. All but one of my managers has been great.. I've had around 4 or 5. The twitty one asked me once why nurses keep quitting or transferring off her floor. I told her it is because she treats people poorly and doesn't give people time off for surgery (my personal example) unless they get there own coverage. She replied "But blah blah blah" So I said "A lot of managers cover their floors just fine and they are understanding about time off, this is what keeps people loyal.. check it out for yourself". She was still dismissing my answer. By the way.. i was an LVN and when I got my RN she called me at home whining about why I didn't "apply" to her floor. To which I said... "UH.. I shouldn't have had to apply", after a few more words, she basically begged me to leave my new floor and come back. Of coorifice I said no... and I loved that she had to beg.

Would you join the Army Nurse Corps? Why or Why not?
Not for all of the money in the world!! Reasons?? 1) I am a military brat so I know the deal. 2) I like to make my own decisions on where I live... and don't try to say I can 'cuz I know better. 3) I don't like the rank structure... how I would have to be respectful of all my superior officers just because they out rank me.. sometimes people are jerks and I don't like keeping my mouth shut. 4) I want to be able to quit my job the day or week I want to.. not fulfill a contract. 5) I don't want to go to a war torn country.. yes I am scared. On the other hand, I think the military is great for some people.. people have many good reasons to join. My dad loved the Navy with all of his heart and stayed in for 30, would have stay'ed for 40 if they'd have let him. I am just not cut out for it... at all!!

Offended by pt- how to react?
[quote=EmerNurse;2122058]I had an older african-american gentleman as a patient once who refused me as his nurse on the same excuse, using the cracker comment as well. I simply asked him if he would like to talk to my charge nurse. He said yes. Ironically, (because my unit is very very diverse in its' staff), the charge nurse is a white male. The patient insisted on a black nurse. He got one. She was from Jamaica. He THEN insisted on a REAL black nurse, aka American. At that point we all threw up our hands. No pleasing some folks and what took a lifetime for them to believe sadly won't always go away in the course of a shift. As for the patient, he got great care, and signed out AMA after his x-ray was negative. go figure. Ms. unproffessional again here.... but I believe in stucking up for ourselves. My mexican friend was told by a white patient "I don't want you as taking care of me because you are Mexican" So she said "Well.... I guess you won't be getting any care until 3:30, 'cuz I'm your nurse". He could have made a stink, or even asked again, and we would have had to re-assign a new nurse, however he got the point and shut up. We as nurses to not have to roll over and play dead everytime someone says hateful things. Patients have every right to be cranky, but NEVER hateful.

was this your first "back-handed compliment"? the guy is just a racist... nothing more than an ignorant dirty pig of a racist. i do admit that i am sometimes un-proffessional when retorting to such patients.. so you may not want to take my advice but here it is. (i am white for the record). "i'm sorry that you are so ignorant" or "don't you think that is a little bit racist"? or even "wow.. i would have never pegged you for a racist" or last but not least "i'm not stupid enough to fall for those back-handed compliments like your girlfriend probably is".

Uniforms.. color scrubs vs whites
I have been a patient.. Cancer w/ surgery, Chemo and radiation. My brother has had 4 open heart surgeries in 40 years. I will never change my mind about the color of a nurses uniform. I want a nurse who is proffessional and caring. I agree that sloppiness has no place in nursing. I don't think nurses should show their middles as some do now. UGH! I am merely suggesting that wearing white has nothing to do with being tidy vs sloppy or a good nurse vs bad nurse.

Name hospital and salary--everywhere
At Tri City Medical Center in Oceanside, CA (which is 20 miles north of San Diego) I made $16.20 an hour as a new grad RN in 1999. They gave me nothing for my 7 years LVN experience. I could look forward to about 2-3 % per year raises. In Seattle, I started at $30.00 in 2002, and they gave me credit for 50%of my LVN experience. We get 4-6% more each year. With much better bennies I might add.

Uniforms.. color scrubs vs whites
Is anyone else sick of hearing "I can't tell the nurses from the housekeeper"? My response is "here's a hint... your nurse is the one who does your assessment, gives you pills, pokes you with needles, etc and the housekeeper takes the trash out, mops the floor, cleans the toilet, etc". A nurse who does not introduce him or herself will not start doing so just because of a white uniform. I wish people would put the responsibility back on the nurse and stop blaming the color of the uniform for pt's not knowing who's who. Does anyone else agree? I'm sure I cannot be the only one who feels this way.
