  1. what could possibly be the upside to having the 'co-workers take a big bite"??? this must be the 'nurses eating their young' syndrome i've heard about. maybe, instead, some encouragement, maybe even getting to know her & what knowledge/experience she does have that allowed her to gain this position. i can't understand the anger toward her at all. i hope she does well & wish her (and all her co-workers) the very best. this profession is difficult enough without having us at each others' throats!
  2. I'm 52, graduated in May and have been working 12 hr shifts since mid June, full time. It is what you think it will be! If you expect it to be awful & hard it will be, if you expect it to be an amazing fulfillment of your hearts desire and the days fly by so fast you don't notice your feet, it will! Go save some lives and enjoy what you've accomplished!!! :-)
  3. I sold my Massage Therapy practice when I started my final year of nursing school. I live in a small (70,000) city and made a generous living at my practice, which I had for 12.5 years. I am planning to take boards to be Nationally certified in Massage Therapy so that when I move to my new state, I can practice both nursing & massage therapy. YES!! You can make a very lucrative income from massage therapy. To have the knowledge & skill of both will be an invaluable asset! The teaching & education that can be done for people is amazing! Go for it! I didn't get out of Massage Therapy because I didn't like it or was burned out....I always wanted my RN degree and couldn't juggle both since I had such a huge practice. Plus, I knew I was moving out of state when I complete nursing school. Hope this helps! Nikki
  4. I don't know the reason why it is not required, but my advice is TAKE IT! I am a senior nursing student graduating in May with little health care experience prior to this. Take Med terminology, take a nutrition class and a pharmacology class too if you have access to them. It will make your life and learning much easier, I'm sure. I did not have these classes and still wish I'd have them. Best of luck to you! Nursing is awesome! Nikki
  5. I completely agree! I am old enough to be nearly eveyone's mom - but they treat me just like any other student and I have totally forgotten that they are (most of them) 25 years younger than me. Once you're in nursing school, in my opinion, we're all on the same level as students. The benefit of being older, for me anyway, has been my life experiences. But that is not to say that some of these kids do much better than I do in some areas. Age really only matters if you make it matter! :)
  6. That is awesome!!! I love reading stories like this, and also like knowing there are others in my age group out there doing the same thing! It keeps our brains healthy and young, in my opinion! I'm going to go on and get my Masters so that when I'm too old to work on the floor I can teach!
  7. Good for you! Good luck!! (Not that luck has ANYTHING to do with Nursing school!) You'll do great - we older students usually do!
  8. You don't say (that I saw) how old you are, but I am 52 and graduate in May....also I have been nominated for Outstanding Nursing Student for my University campus! I don't think one is EVER too old!! Go for it!!
  9. Yes, I have heard of this company and I know they are reputable, but that's the extent of my knowledge about them. I have heard really good things about their products.
  10. For what it's worth, I think you know exactly what to do and I would encourage you to follow your heart. You sound to me like you would be an excellent instructor and lord knows, we need excellent instructors out here! Don't second guess yourself, dear one...follow your intuition. You have your answers inside of you!
  11. I am sure you did great and passed with flying colors! Have faith! We'll all be here to celebrate with you!!
  12. Well, I'm way out here in South Dakota and the University has traditional day program, but also offer Internet programs which allow the student to do their clinical rotation on the weekends and some evenings. I doubt you want to come here just for that! I worked full time (owned my own small business) until the end of my first semester of nursing school. I knew that there was no way I could give school the time and attention it deserved if I continued to work, but I also worked really hard up till that time to save money, etc. I am a single woman with no other means of support but myself (my kids are grown now). It isn't really luck or anything...but I also know you can do it! You sound like an intelligent and self motivated person - and if you say you can (and will) do it, you can! I know some of the younger girls may be jealous (envious) of me that I am not working during nursing school, as you say you are. The upside to your situation is that you have so many good working years in front of you and more energy than some of us older students. My best to you! I don't know you, but I'm proud of you that you're doing it! That goes for everyone who is raising a family, working, and going to school. You may be envious of me, but I am in awe of you! :bowingpur
  13. We were told we would be culturing poop samples, but we could bring dog poo instead of our own! No one was grossed out and the only requirement was that it had to be 'fresh', as in only a few hours old if possible. I'd ask if that is acceptable, otherwise.....I guess all I can say is, as nurses, we're going to be seeing a whole lot of things that are worse than poop! Triple glove and get the poo!
  14. Hi! do you still have the website that has a free template as you mentioned above? I could sure use the help! Thank you! Nikki:typing
