  1. "instead of being a macho man and feeling like the big nurse on campus who gets to give the drugs without an instructor being present." I'm actually quite perturbed at that comment. This student nurse had the guts to come on here looking for support, and that comment is ridiculous. A lot of nursing programs allow sn's to check off on p.o meds, allowing the sn to administer them with a peer or alone. Everyone makes mistakes - I'm sure even you have nicx. As for the original poster, keep you head held high and know that mistakes do happen no matter how much you strive to not make them. Even the safest nurses make mistakes. Learn from it and move on, you are a great student nurse.
  2. 1. What is your degree in? RPN Diploma (8 months exp) 2. What state do you live in? ON 3. What is your job title? RPN 4. How much do you make an hour? 27/hr 5. How much do you make a year? 55K I love the people I work with and I get to use all my skills, I dislike the lack of teamwork with a few certain nurses.
  3. I'm a new nurse too, 8 months. And I know how how you feel. Just for next time you work, try maybe to go in early and try to plan your day/night out how you want to go. I know that things happen sometimes that you don't feel proud of. We have all been there. Continue to hold your head high and know that your a good, caring nurse. I've seen patients left in horrid messes and it is always after the patient had a particular nurse. I swore i would never do that to my patients. But critical patients/situations trump any brief/sheet change. Just manage your time well and know your priorities and you'll be just fine :)
  4. I always leave my patients in a state that I like finding them in. Brief changed, boosted in the bed and toileted ready for the next shift so they have a good start. I would say time management is a big issue, but there's really no excuse to leave patients like that, even if you have to stay a bit past your shift to fix them up. Try starting your patient rounds earlier and get time management advice from other nurses.
  5. I am a smoker and at work I take my smoke breaks when my scheduled breaks are. We are allowed to smoke off hospital property on the public sidewalk. When I go back inside to work I always wash my hands and pop a piece of gum in. I have heard from many co-workers that they would not have known I smoke because I don't totally reek of it. I shower daily and am hygienic, I've never had a patient ask me if I smoke or complain that I stink.
  6. I'm Curious... What's the scariest thing/experience you've ever seen or had as a nurse? Mine was when I had to tell a pt husband to leave as there was home/?abuse issues. The husband and patient got extremely angry and I had to call security to escort him out. When pt husband left I was very shaken over this situation as I was only a nsg student at the time. So I told the charge I was going to get a coffee and step outside for some air. When I went outside, the husband was pacing in the parking lot staring at me. It looked like he was going to go postal. I was stiff with fear and I didn't know wether to stay or run. Finally security ran out and escorted me in and the husband finally left. Man was I ever shaken up about that!!!
  7. Getting called at home after my shift is over with someone telling me I forgot to do something or I messed up... got to love those calls eh :s
  8. Meteorologist/Storm Chaser!!! (I'm already an amature storm chaser...hehe)
  9. From what I understand it's a pretty straightforward run. It's a pt going from a medical floor out of town to another hospital for some tests and then back to the floor. I'm unaware of the dx so I'm not much help
  10. Hey Guys, I'm suppose to be going on an ambulance run with a patient. It's my first time going on one and I'm pretty nervous. I'm wondering if you have ever been on one, what sort of items do I need to take, do I follow the patient everywhere they go for tests etc? How do I know where the ambulance will be to pick us up? I'm so nervous!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  11. that's too creepy
  12. Hey Everyone, I'm interested in knowing of your code blue experiences. What happened, what was the outcome and was it your patient...I have only ever seen one person being coded, with no success. Patient was already blue before they started compressions. I look forward to your stories.
  13. Hey, I'm a new grad as well and I consistently get a red rash on the back of my hands from the hand sanitizer my hospital uses. I try to wash my hands with soap and water as often as possible and pat dry my hands. I also try to always moisturize at work with a glycerine/silicone hand cream that creates a lovely barrier on my hands. My hands always get better when I'm at home and not using hand sanitizer. I moisturize, moisturize, moisturize all the time at home :) good luck, I hope your hands get better.
  14. I'm not looking for any medical advice, I'm only curious if any one else out there suffers from athletes foot like I do? It's so incredibly painful, dry and itchy I can barely stand it. I want to chop my feet off! I've tried several OTC medications, topical and spray and now I am trying tea tree oil foot soaks and tea tree oil/aloe Vera homemade ointment. I wear cotton socks and dry my feet thoroughly and wash them after work. Not sure what else to do! Does anyone else suffer like I do?
