I have 16 years experience as an RN with most of those in the ER. Just left ER 3 weeks ago for administration. I love the ER but I just had to take a break (who knows, maybe it will be permanent). I am 46 years old, in good physical condition, but I can't take the 12-hour night shifts anymore. Our ER has staffing shortages like you wouldn't believe, but how many people are crazy enough to put up with the crap you have to? Sorry, just needed to vent!!
  2. We just had a mom bring her daughter in because the daughter could not stop itching her head (she arrived in the ER at 200am). The girl's head was full of lice and her hair was the filthiest hair I have ever seen. Needless to say, we spent the rest of the shift itching our heads, and had to close the room until it was completely cleaned by Housekeeping!!!
  3. I'm just outside Toledo, RN for 16 years. Just got my BSN and am starting my MSN in October. I have many years ER experience and just started in Management.
  4. I just completed my BSN through Indiana Wesleyan University and it took 18 months to complete. The program is well-organized and I don't feel my online BSN is being "looked down" by anyone. I am starting a Master's program in October, 2006 and since my BSN program was CCNE accredited I am having no difficulty with graduate programs. To get into a CRNA program not only requires a BSN but documented critical care experience so check with a program to find out if they will accept an online degree. For me it was worth it.

Does your employer offer any tuition reimbursement that you don't know about? Just a thought!! I just completed my BSN working full-time, taking online course work and my employer offered tuition reimbursement. I could not have done it without the financial help from work. Hang in there and good luck.
  6. Great idea to start out on Med-Surg to get that experience and confidence. I work in the Promedica system so I am partial to Toledo Hospital. I feel Promedica cares about not only their patients but also their employees. It would be a great place for you to start and get some awesome experience. Good Luck with this
  7. I just completed my BSN online through Indiana Wesleyan University. There is no residency requirement and I did my clinicals close to home with no problems. I can't say enough good things about this program and am starting my Master's through there in October, 2006. Just go to the Indiana Wesleyan University site and getting the necessary information is quite easy. Good luck
  8. Our ED has really clamped down on the med rec forms and the floor nurses will not accept med rec forms if they aren't completely filled out and signed. we all hate these forms but realize there is not much we can do about them due to JCAHO. A recent article by the ENA discusses how time consuming these are for ED nurses so we do have the ENA on our side.
