Liberty University MSN in Nurse Education
I spend about 2-3 hour per day M-F, much longer on weekends, for research time for projects and such..... All three are very do-able. Pharm and A&P (for my classes) covered cases studies r/t a dx. Assessment was more time consuming d/t clinical. I started in fall 2007 and will finish in spring 2010, for the most part I did 8 week courses. between the courses I believe it is about a week off...It is all a blur now. I did take a Summer break 4 weeks that first year. Your track course will be 16 weeks each. This track ends Sunday and I will not go back to class until after the new year. I forget the date...about the 2nd week sometime. I believe a fair break.. I'm very ready to finish..... Best of luck! Faith

Liberty University MSN in Nurse Education
I am currently enrolled in LU MSN online. I am in my second Track Course (Clinical). If all goes well I will graduate in May 2010. I stated out MSNEd but d/y job changes switched to CNS.. I LOVE the program. The professors are good overall with quite a few being GREAT! Taylor and Sprear come to mind, right away but all have been more helpful as online than any of my BSN professors in a brick and mortar program. The classes are challenging AND VERY TIME CONSUMING! I work fulltime, but it has been do-able. Give them a call and see for yourself. As a full time nurse there are alot of FA out there but they where able to find me some $$ as well! Best of Luck! fgoff

Compentency documentation
It is a work in progress. I would like to avoid the skills check off forms and just have asigned compentancy statement that the observer noted the skill completed using current policy/procedure. (date and number, manual info inserted) I've been trying to orfer the book by Donna Wright but it wasbacked order on cheepbooks. I will try again.... Thanks for you input. fgoff

Compentency documentation
1BlessedRN, Thanks for the input! I guess my facility has made the "simply request that they become incorporated" because I'm charged with "get everyones compentecy folder up to date". By the way the good part is I'm also developing most of the P&Ps..... Maybe that will work in my favor?

Compentency documentation
msutton, Thanks for your reply, I'm looking into the program. I work for a state agency and don't spend much when it comes to nursing esucation. The philosphy of the day "is do more with less", or in this case nothing. Have a Merry Christmas! Fgoff

Compentency documentation
hey everyone! merry christmas! i was just wondering. when you do skill competencies for new employees or for annual up-dates, do you have a skill check sheet for each procedure or just a list of all procedures that need to be completed to date and initial as they are accomplished? i began this job a few months ago and there are about 20 procedures that are skill check off for competencies. that make for a large folder.... plus many are not all the same as the policy/procedures (no updates have been made and there are no electronic copies and hard are available. thanks, faith

A Patient Who DOES NOT Belong in Minimum Security!!
If this parient assaultive you can press charges. Notify your supervisor and call the autorities to make the report to them. We have similar inappropriate placements on our rehab wards. Try to have al the staff work together so no-one is ever alone with this guy is you are not already doing this. Oh and if he is stilling can't the facility press charges for thief? Good luck! fgoff

Online MSN?
Sadie Ladie, Classes are going well. I'm in my 6th class. Like any program some instructors are better at thier jobs than others. However, NONE of the instructors I've had so far did not or could not do thier jobs. Feed back from questions for me has never been longer than 36 hours, usually less than a day. Email is faster than discussion board. Grades are posted in 5 to 7 days they say, but it is usually closer to 5 than 7. I am not a strong student so I spend serveral hours per night for one class. It has been a rare week that there has not been a written assignment to be graded and a discussion on the boards going about readings or article reviews..... I have really enjoyed most all of it! Best of luck, fgoff

Free CNA Training?
Central Regional Hostipal in Butner has the CNA class for new hires. It may be a little far to drive. But there are shuttles out of Raleigh. Good Luck! fgoff

Pharmacology/Drug Calculation Tests
My staff are already employeed (after hire, not applicants)and are paid for the time to take the test. Also paid during the study/coaching sessions if needed! It is part of thier job. As to the test...yes it was written by a team of nurses, with MSNs and PhDs mostly at UNC and other state of NC agencies input and you're right it took them over 18 months to write and "test" the test on all of us Staff Educators! As to the legal side.... I give the test and report the test results to supervisors, they make the choice to carry out "separtions" ....( like I said, with three tries and coaching ... how does anyone fail??? I can find no documentation in the records of this ever happening! I always remember...you can get sued for doing all the right things, just as often as when failing to carry-out policy. So I do policy and let the AG's office fight the fights that need fighting..... Thanks! fgoff

Pharmacology/Drug Calculation Tests
We give a pharm/calulation test after hire. The new nurse (& travelers) gets a study packet and have 1 month and three attempts to pass. A different test is given each time. If a nurse is unable to pass, I tutor in the area of weakness before they re-test. If after three attempts the policy states they are "separated". I've never had this happen. Some do feel very discussed about the process. fgoff

Online MSN?
Hilundlass, I'm attending Liberty U. online for my MSNEd. I did not have to do take a GRE but there was some GPA cut off for nursing courses. I'll be in my 5th & 6th classes starting in August. I find it to be very challenging and time consuming. But, with the help of the professors I've done well. Best of Luck, fgoff

Admissions process, is this how it is everywhere?
OMG! If you had not said you are not working at a state facility, I would have swear you & I work the same place. But mine is a state facility, and this is "normal" for us as well.

You won't believe this.....HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!
I agree with Michigan. Bullies need to be called out and held accoutable for thier actions. I would also recommend speaking with this new nurse first to let her know you will be speaking to the ER manager, as she will be caught in the middle. She may need extra support if this "joke" was malicious intent and not just poor judgement and poor taste ect.... fgoff

quick question
The Substance abuse unit I work is very much like the one above. Our techs also draw blood and transport patient as needed. Each shift has an HCT/EMT as well to help with medical emergencies. On the Acute ward they are do a lot of 1:1 with high risk patients. We can't get though a shift without them! fgoff

Grad School Project--Safe Staffing Ratios
I'm researching these Bills as well, but from a policy issue percective. I selected this issue because of working places in the past, I would have 6-7 patients with 2-3 admits/discharges during a shift. I total it all up one night some patients got less than 10 minutes of my time face to face. Most of the time I don't like 'Big Brother' making laws because He can, but strongly feel something has to be done to protect us (nurses) and patients. fgoff
