  1. our patient ratio is 55 patients to 3 cna's. IF everyone shows up for work. there are plenty of times, more than 50 percent of the time , when we only have 2. our nurse does not, and will not answer bells. she charts, and gives meds. thats it. im not downing nurses, as i want to be an rn some day. but i dont even care she dont do that stuff. my complaint is how she treats us. she is demeaning, degrading. ok..im done venting. this isnt even my post. lol
  2. what exactly do u m ean by tech ? what does a tech do ?
  3. i have 5 children, 2 of which require good supervised care. i work full time 3rd shift, and have a sitter 5 days out of the pay period, my husband is has off the other days, just the way our schedules worked out. either shift u take, it will be hard at first, i know first hand. none of the 3 shifts seems perfect , all has pros and cons. you may have to realize you will need child care and have to pay for it like me, unless you have family to help. good luck, it will all work out !!
  4. i can only hope that someday my charge nurse would feel that way about us cna's .
  5. i can tell you my nurse does not think i m there to help her. she is a bear. she does NOT offer any help, only nit picks, and puts little digs in all nite. she is cranky , moody mostly and humiliates the cnas in front of everyone when there is something she doesnt like. seriously she is stressing me out. so unprofessional its ridiculous.
  6. i only worked 68 hours my first pay period and my check with claiming 4 people on my w2's , take home was 729 or thereabouts. i make 12.13 an hour. why ?
  7. ok .. i see what you are saying. but i actually have a resident who refuses to use a bedpan, cause she doesnt want to, she is very alert and aware. she calls me in, and says roll me over, i have to take a bm. oh...and can u wipe my butt. im like theres nothing there. well wipe it, it will help me take a bm. she actually wants me to stimulate her orifice. she gets mad if i get a pad to put under there to catch the mess. she urinates her bed/incontinent pad at least 4 times a nite when she COULD ask for the bedpan. she pees herself on purpose then rings all nite long...IM WET. i think its gross she is refusing to use a bedpan. the only thing wrong with her is she has a amputee/below the knee on one leg. her other problem is being a pain.
  8. i would call your local nursing homes and see who offers the cna training or if they can give you some direction to get the training. In PA HACC offers it, and my new employer sponsored me. I am very interested in the PTC training if someone can help me find where to get it
  9. maybe we should get your charge nurse and my charge nurse together, and lock them up ? mine is unbearable. really. she is. im completely down in the dumps and dread going into work, not cause of patient care but because of her. and some co workers. why are they all so cranky ? Normally i get along with people, but my gawd, the drama there, ugh
  10. i work 11-7am, just started june 11 as a new cna. we have rounds at 12-2-4 and then at 430 we have to get up our dialysis patients and have them out the door /with breakfast done to leave by 5am. we then have about 5 patients each, to bed bathe, dress, do their rooms etc before 7am. it is a very stressful time, and almost kills me every morning. sometimes we have to stay over 15-30 min is norm. we have to rush so much, that we dont really get to spend quality time with patient, we are speed dressing/bathing them. LTC sucks as far as ratio for patient care. the patients suffer and i see many cna's burnt out/terrible attitudes, bitchee and shouldnt even be there.
  11. yes u can work before getting your cna cert. i was hired by a ltc , and at completion of the course, i started working as cna. ive been there for 4 weeks already. i take my state cert july 26th. i finished my class june 11th. this was thru HACC in PA. my ltc paid for or sponsored me. look around, make some calls. good luck
  12. i would be very interested in taking a 5 week course to gain these skills, im searching near where i live, in bloomsburg , PA and i can not figure out where it is offered. anyone who is more computer literate or just knows, please help! i just finished my cna and am working ltc, but have hopes to take more courses so i can work in hospital setting ASAP. thanks !
  13. what is normal ? im not sure anything with LTC makes sense. what she says does kinda make sense, their way of thinking seems to benefit its employees. I think if you think part time is what works for you, then only do part time, APPLY somewhere else, theres places everywhere and maybe consider AGENCY employment. there is much flexibility with agency positions. ALSO , ask her if they have flex or prn positions ?
  14. i recently started a few weeks ago. I have to say at first i was VERY overwhelmed at the work load of LTC. Most of ours are also incontinent also. They did not leave me alone the first nite, but i must say my orientation sucked because the first 7 nites we were understaffed, which has almost become normal. Stick with it long enough for you to get over the SHOCK of it all, and dont make any decisions about staying for at least 30 days. i have been there since june11 and im adjusting a bit better now. My biggest problem is the people i work with, not the patients !!!!
  15. i too live in PA, what part do u live in ? i live in bloomsburg. i take my state cert on the 26th this month. My employer sponsored me for my class and pays for the test. ALthough, i work full time 3rd shift with no shift differential offered, no benefits , no insurance. i get paid 12.13 an hour. I am strongly considering going AGENCY because they pay on average here 14-15 an hour. Of course there would be no guarantee of hours that way.
  16. here in PA (northeast central) i was sponsored by my employer (ltc employer)..they hired me and sponsored (paid for ) my training thru HACC (harrisburg area community college , normally costs 600). after completion , i began work the next day, at 12.13 an hour. 3rd shift. no shift diff. they did NOT pay me to take the course. but they paid FOR the course. so that helped. i also know, that if your state or county has a career link office ...they sponsor people to take the class also and then help u find work. although that shouldnt be hard to find a job in this field. some places ltc, pay as little as 9 $ an hour, WITH benefits. my 12 an hour is without any benefits and no insurance either. AGENCY here pays between 14 and 15 depending on the agency. home health pays less. VNA even less, around 8 an hour. such i wide range, you really have to check around. good luck
  17. are you also in pennsylvania ?
  18. i just got hired for CNA in PA, they are offering/paying for the training thru harrisburg area community college. they offer the classes locally, off campus. i will start at between 12-13 in a LTC facility full time. other nursing homes i found did not pay as much. although that price is with NO benefits, as i get them thru my husbands work. if i wanted benefits, i would only make 925/hr.
  19. here starting cna's get anywhere from 925 to 13 dollars LTC from the research ive done. agency's as high as 15 i found. i also found a few places that offer the training so you dont have to pay.
  20. yeah i say ! i just got hired for a CNA position at a LTC facility. they offer the certified training and pay for it too. i start at 12-13 dollars per hour. Later down the road, i will work for agency, they start at 15 an hour here in our area. i think thats pretty good. i am a mom of 5 and have been trying to get my gen eds in to gear towards the BSN program, but will do cna work for now........need the financial help right now...... anyways, just wanted to share the good news, hopefully i will love it !
  21. well ...i know i posted earlier..but just another note..... i did have my last child.....at 37. i had had 4 sons and finally got my girl. she is an angel. BUT.....it as not easy. i had problems. at 30 weeks i knew something was wrong. to make a long story kinda short........at 33 weeks i had the doctors finally convinced to keep looking, something was really wrong ! and sure enough. my daughter was starving in there. for 3 weeks she had not grown and was literally starving. they gave me all kinds of drugs...for 2 days and then induced. she was born at almost 33 weeks and weighed 3 pounds. she spent 32 days in the NICU. my placenta was blackened and looked dead my husband said. she is a miracle. she is wonderful, and almost 3 years old now. but it was a long road..very scarey. to all you nicu nurses, i love the special ones, you know who you are..you made our life in the nicu and we love you for taking care of our daughter and other children in such a critical time !
  22. what is the health community coming down to. money plays such an important role and its not fair. these darn insurance companies etc...its ridiculous. this woman may not have family and cant be left alone 24/7. if she doesnt have money, and no insurance..the state should step in. id say no meds...wow neglect bigtime. this is a big shame that lady , poor thing, no one wants her, no place to go, no home, and she spent her life probably working , paying taxes, taking care of others and when she is in need, she is hung out to dry. i hate the system and this is in the good ole usa no less.
  23. i took a & p I last semester and i didnt score high enough . i got a D. it ws totally overwhelming for me. iknow some who take it 2-3 times to do well and others do well the very first time. i think a lot has to do with your age, and how long youve been out of school. my 6th grader came home from school, and was studying some of the same stuff i have in A and P. unreal. we didnt learn any of that stuff when i was in school. i felt really dumb. a and p just seemed almost impossible to learn to me personally. i didnt understand teh questions etc. im no dumbie either. i had 4.0 for 3 semesters till i took that class. real bummer. i wish you all the luck, and spend every moment learning, reading, coloring, and do the flashcards and all practice exams etc they offer. dont miss a lab either. do study groups too. good luck hon
  24. because i was over 35 with my last child, they labeled me ELDERLY pregnancy. i about died. my husband laughed about it.
