My CoWorkers Were Brilliant During A Code Last Night!
Once upon a time while working in the geriatric psych. closed unit I noticed and heard a pt chewing something hard. I said, "What are you chewing." He said, "A piece of candy." Asked if I could see it and he willingly opened his mouth and took out the so called candy which turned out to be someboby's hearing aid. I wanted to laugh so bad. But instead realized this pt could have swallowed that 'make-believe candy' and what a disaster that would have been. It amazing, the things they do.

my encounter with a schizophrenic
I agree with Charlie. Always have an escape route. No. 1 priority - when pt's act out is Safety. Pt became manipulative and angry (could be a no. of reasons). Being a med. surg. unit you were focused on the physiological tasks, i.e. bp meds, comfort, get pt to dialysis, do everything right while someone else (preceptor) is watching ........Remember, you cannot debate any issue with a non-rational person. Just let them talk it out (or throw it out) and keep your distance. If this were a psych. unit - you may have had the time to develop pt's trust (and even then it may not happen). Don't beat yourself up. Your frustration stems from your desire to help the person, and you just need more time with these types of pt's to understand the dynamics. I worked geriatric psych. for 4.5 years. I saw alot, but I haven't seen it all... This was a learning experience..

They quit on me!
I started traveling last fall and before I started my assignment I had 5 different recruiters - they all lost my papers - I almost claimed insanity - I screamed several times:uhoh3: I was fighting mad:smiley_ab The good news is now I can :chuckle laugh about it. And you will, too, someday. To answer your question, yes, turnover rate can be high. I think they are also under pressure to meet quota's.

Has anyone taken online icu exam for travel requirement?
Glad to hear you're happy with nurse choice. I accepted an assignment with them. They require the ICU online exam. Do they ask any questions regarding Swan lines - do you recall? Thanks for encouragement..:)

Ever Walked Out On An Assignment????
I am not an ER nurse, but I can imagine the shifts can get pretty hectic at times. However, that seems like a conspiracy to make or break the travel nurse for the fun of it with no interest in pt care, safety or anything else. Call OSHA after you leave there. Get another agency. How long have you been traveling? Never walk out - they may turn you into the state for abandonment. When that assignment is over - run fast and far away from there and don't look back. I pray you make it through the next few days of the assignment. By the way, who was shocking the vtach pt?

traveler n need of advice asap
My 1st assignment was with the same company you are with now. I had several hair raising moments with them and it took several weeks to smooth out. If you want more money - you can go with a rapid response company like the one I'm about to try for my 2nd assignment. Short term assignments 4-8 weeks, work work work 48+ hrs though - that's how you make the money. I'm about to find out in August. If you want me to refer your name - let me know. It doesn't hurt to talk to the company. I'm not sure how long I can keep up with that pace though. It will be work/sleep/no life. What's it like working in Vegas?

How long is your orientations?? HELP
Pat yourself on the back for taking 6 patients last night and made it through. Take your mgr aside and tell her you need another week, don't hesitate. It's your hard earned license. It's hard to feel secure at first, it only comes with each daily experience - you will gain confidence with each new accomplishment.:yelclap:

Passed!!!!

Getting a verbal for being too happy.
Don't give up your cheerfulness for anything or anyone, it is a part of who you are. They are sooooooo miserable, they can't stand your smiles. Just smile at them and thank them for the information and move on. DO NOT let their misery bring you down..... Just take care of your patients and help them to smile.

Main Problem In The Nursing Field?
1. Why are doctor's screaming at the nurse for calling them with their pt's concerns and problems? 2. Lack of appropriately trained support staff. 3. Heavy pt to nurse ratio 4. Lack of functional equipment (1 pulse ox device for 40 bed telemetry unit) 5. Growing frustration of patients, family members, doctors, management
