  1. i was kinda put off by this story telling what people made and what jobs you can get without a degree. http://www.parade.com/articles/editi...-2007/wpe_lead this is the insert that made me mad. no wonder people think you can be any joe blow off the street to be a nurse!g the hottest jobs (no college degree required) registered nurses an aging population ensures demand for years to come: $48,000-$74,000 then i checked out the website and found this "editor's note" editor's note: we apologize for the error in the "the hottest jobs (no college degree required)" box. the copy should have read "personal trainers" not "athletic trainers". we also regret any misunderstanding that may have been caused by the inclusion of registered nurses and dental hygienists in the box. while non-college diploma and certificate programs do exist for these occupations, the majority of rns and dental hygienists have college degrees and additional levels of training. we appreciate your bringing these matters to our attention. hmmm. wonder if they will print that correction in next week's paper. doubt it.:angryfire oh and please read all the comments on their site as well. its not the point of a degree or diploma. its the point that it doesn't tell you that you still have to go to school, take a state test and keep your license current and in good standing. how it reads to me is that "oh no degree? well anyone can become a nurse without an education" i have my diploma but it still involved me taking college courses at a university. it makes it sound as if no college required at all and that is so so untrue. i just think the article does a disservice to all nurses degree or not.

  3. The other night had my RN tell a pt "no" when requesting Ambien. Said it would drop his b/p (100/60). I never heard that about Ambien and just wondered if anyone else had and if true? I understand Narc's but not Ambien. Thks!
  4. I went to Baptist school Jun'06 and work there now. Yes they are strict, but I really enjoyed it. A lpn is an lpn no matter where you choose to go to school.Doesn't matter where you went to school. At the end everyone still takes the NCLEX. Yes it's true, you will get LOTS of floor experience going there. Just mind your P's and Q's and you will do fine there.
  5. I totally agree. I wouldn't risk my licenses working at a place 2 days a month and with what you say is going on. You alone will not be able to solve the med problems or protect yourself or your pts. It's a team effort. You can't be the only catcher on the team. Heck I get frustrated b/c I only work 3 days a week on my unit and come back and a totally different pt census is on the floor! If the nurses won't give you a decent report, it's like starting your shift blind! I hope it works out for you, And yes I would leave that LTC. PS. Do they keep pt charts on the rounder where you can get to them?
  6. I've always heard that the vaccine is not a sure thing of not getting Ck.Pox. Had a friend who said her son received the vaccine and still had Ck.Pox. Also heard it only last like 5 years? I've never had it, sometimes wish I had. Freaked out my girls would bring it home and give it to me. So I had all of us vac'd. I really don't want to be 28 years old with the chicken Pox!!!! I went to a "pox party" when I was a kid. Never got it, if I did it was very, very mild.
  7. As of this past semester. Baptist- Lpn practice on dummies and then pts (shot's and iv's). Even gave you vial of saline and a needle. Rn program- 1st shots on each other. Soph semester. I think. 1st iv senior semester on each other. I'm just lucky that another lpn and I are fast tracking and have decided to buddy up before senior semester. We already know that all the Rn students are going to want to be our best friend senior rotation! lol:lol2:
  8. It's called tolerance. Some pt have it. Some don't. Apparently her pt didn't.
  9. Phoenix resident Amanda Price, one of the few women customers at the restaurant, said the outfits did not offend her. ''You don't hear nuns complaining about pregnant nun costumes, and that's more disgraceful than sexy nurses,'' she said. Haha! Thought that part was funny. Heck I think people threw a bigger fit when Mattel's Midge doll was pregnant and Barbie was her OB/GYN. I can't tell you how many times I hear "You're a nurse?" and I say yeah. "Oh will you take REAL GOOD care of me if I come see you" "WINK WINK". I say yeah if you have a heart attack. I guess they expext me to giggle and turn red. lol:lol2:
  10. This is what happened: The unit is Rehab, there were 15 patients 12 were new to me. I got crappy report but figured I could read the charts later. [Which is the way I always learn about my pts.] I work nights and when I come in (if time). I verify all meds on the mar to be given after 700pm,(In other words meds that are to be given by me), all orders for the past 3 days,(to make something new wasn't overlooked)and all PRN's. Of course 2 out 3 times a week that doesn't always happen. In that case I only verify the meds the mar SAYS are to be given on my shift.( to make sure they haven't been changed or d/c'd)and all orders for that day(NOW I DO). I pass those and if someone request a PRN med in the middle of my med pass, I go and verify that 1 med for that pt and continue on. After all said and done I go back to my pt's chart, verify all my PRN's and verify that no new orders were written and not documented on the mar by previous shift or at shift change. And yes I've had one med occurrence so far(I'm sure not my last). And it was on one of those days when pt coded at shift change, I lacked the time to verify the entire mar,Previous shift had a order for K+ stat and again @ 8. Well it was wrote on the chart K+ stat and signed by previous shift but the 8:00 dose wasn't noted on mar or red doted on the chart. No fault but my own still. But I would rather give a dose late then give something that was d/c'd or changed. THAT's also the the reason I NOW look over the orders written for that day, too.Even if short on time. It decreases my chances of late meds again. Policy says go back 24 hour to verify mar but I go back 3 days at beginning of shift and with new mar at midnight I go all the way back to the orginal order. I guess I'm anal. But I've had a pt in the past that missed a week of a med b/c of the 24 hr policy. So seven days total of 14 shifts, chart was to be checked 14 times. But wasn't caught till I did my normal "check the whole dang chart" routine. Does your LTC put red dots next to all med orders? Not saying every person does it where I work, but I'd say at least 85% does. Just my 3 cents.
  11. I watch Grey's when I get the chance. It's funny and it cracks me up. I don't pay attention to the medical stuff. I just like it. I'm sure cops say the the same things about cop shows.lol Anyways, One night while sitting at the rounder (4 nurses and 2 drs),we started talking about tv. 1 nurse said "Hey don't you notice there is only 1 nurse on that entire show?" and another nurse agreed with her, but of course me and my smart mouth said: "Could you imagine a hospital run by doctors and no nurses!?" Well it got quiet for a minute. and then EVERYONE busted out laughing.like yeah right, like that could ever happen! It was so funny!
  12. I am so with both comments.I've heard is : "Awww You're a nurse? and you smoke? yeah......... When are you quitting? When they take the twinkies and cupcakes out the vending machine.......... Most folks look at me funny and I really don't care. If people can eat twinkies and junk because they want it then I will smoke if I want to. Is either one healthy? Uh....No. I'm not one of the nurses that hide in my car and smoke. I put on my sweatshirt and "smoke" jacket go across the street to the clinic. Come back shove it all back down in my duffle bag, grab a few mints and wash up. I'm not saying it gets rid of all the smoke smell. But I think its more considerate then others I've worked with or some patients families who tell their kin they will be back because they gotta smoke and then come back and talk about it. I've only been called out once by a patient. I forgot my mint and was in her face. She was a smoker and really just wanted to smell it. I work cardiac also and have several smokers or ex-smokers. I try to be considerate toward all patients.
  13. Well here are the laws just enforced in the past year. No smoking on any hospital campus in the state. That's fine they even offer support and patches for the ones who wanted to quit(employees). I have caught a few smoking in rooms. (sensors in the vents). They are so embarrassed about the alarms going off they try only once. plus had one that didn't realize you could get sick smoking and wearing the patch. Well they learned the hard way. Do have a few snuff and dippers. I don't know about the day shift but at night you either hide in your car or drive across the street to the clinic next door(Some drs own it and they told us we could go over there). The "rule" is you are to clock out for smoke breaks. But why would you clock out for 2 breaks and still get charged for a 30 min lunch that no one ever takes? So it's like your docking yourself double. Your are very right about inconsiderate smokers being one of the reasons for the laws. I smoke. Yes. But not in the present of children or a large amount of non-smokers. Not at the gas pump and I could keep going on and on. Other laws that follow were no smoking in restaurants unless it is 21 and up. That includes clubs that 4 out of 7 nights have shows for 21 and up. plus has a family night and so on. (they serve food during the day, all ages). I understand the day thing and family night. But the small club that has been around as long as I can remember is struggling. Losing money. Sure they could change their shows but the bands that play at night are really for adults and afew have got their "BIG" start in showbusiness starting there. That's is the only thing that sucks about it. One more law. No smoking in the car with children of corificeat age. I've not seen or heard about this being enforced. But thinking about kids during the winter and rain with a smoking adult having the window cracked 1 inch makes me ill. They tried another law but didn't pass. To charge pregnant women with abuse if smoking. But heck how are they going to pass a law for that if they can't even charge a woman that had twins addicted to meth and in bad shape!!!!! Reason they say they couldn't was because she didn't actually put it in a bottle and feed it to them! I swear! I could slap some folks sometimes! But no. then I would get charged with something.lol
  14. Foley ? In your car ?
  15. A couple of questions How old are your kids? What hours are you taking at school ? 2 days? 3 days? online? Will the kids be in daycare while your in school? Very important question... How long has it been since you have been in school? When I started my pre's I went 5 days a week.It was 12hours and 4 classes. I tried to space them out, So I would have time between to study. 3 of them M/W/F 9-till (can't remember) and T/Th 1 10-1130. But I had 1 in school and one in daycare so I could study after dropping them off in the morning and again till 330. So my nights didn't consist of school just family. Plus I didn't have to work. This was my first semester back after a long break and it was hard. But I did try to balance myself to take 2 hard classes and 2 easier classes. Which I was only guessing which would be harder and which easier. Then I went to LPN school for a year which was 4-5 days a week 8-4. Then I went 2 summer semesters A&P I and A&P II. I only took one class each b/c summer semesters are only a month long and I knew I would be cramming alot of stuff into a month! Now since I've started working part time and I'm only taking 2 classes M/W/F 12-4 and working 2 12's at night. Which I still struggle at times but making good grades This is just an example of things I did. Don't over do it if first time to school or its been awhile. Look all your hours in the day and write it all out. Don't tell yourself that " Oh I can study after 10 till midnight when the kids go to bed, when you know that even right now your ready to pass out by 9!" lol Plus If you over do it your grades could suffer and you don't want that if the school you're trying to get into is based on your GPA.
