If the wound is developing black eschar it has to be changed to stage 4, in our facility if resident has stage 3 or 4 we can put catheter in them to help keep urine out of wound. I like to use accuzyme on necrotic tissue, it helps to debride the eschar. also Panafil is great to promote granulation. we use optifoam dressings to cover these areas. The optifoam is by medline. Hope that this helps.

I work in long term care facility, my position is Treatment Nurse. I always follow universa precautions, and good hand washing before and after patient contact. I have had rash for about 2 weeks, these begin as what looks like little bite, then become fluid filled blisters. had some comeup on outer aspect of hands, went to the doctor yesterday. They said it was staph infection probably MRSA and did culture of it. Also placed me on bactrim for a week and I have to call back friday and see if culture is back. They also told me that they are seeing alot of this. why is this becoming so popular a thing? Of course they said that we cant prove that I got it from work, figure the odds. Oh well, hopefully will go away soon, dont like looking at hands and seeing these things.:uhoh21:

I love LTC. We have communication sheets for each hall, I use an extra one of these and make notes on patient as to how take meds, what treatments etc. by all means listen to cnas they have most hands on with that resident and they know if something is different with them. Also follow your instinct, if something doesnt set right with you about a resident and maybe nothing specific, just an overall decline follow up on it.

In LTC facility I work at the charts have pink dot on outside of it if they are dnr, is also on bottom of MAR, and our names outside the door are red if DNR, black if not, this helps alot.

I have worked in LTC for 21 years, 5 years as CNA and 16 years as LPN. Yes i get frustrated when working short and inappropriately placed residents and demanding families, beds not working etc. However i dont see myself anywhere else. I have had lots of people tell me, you need to work in hospital, well i like the family atmosphere of LTC much more and I think there are probably short staffing in hospitals too. I have been told " when you stop caring about them, it is time to leave." I hope that I never stop caring. I have also had people tell me, " It takes special person to work in LTC" maybe it is true, however I like what I do and that helps alot.

In 1998 we moved from New York to Tennessee. I had to contact Tennessee Board of Nursing and get paperwork from them to fill out for license in Tennessee. Also had to send form to NY board of nursing to fill out and they sent it to Tn board of nursing. Hope this helps.

I had 1st at 23, 2nd at 26. was through with LPN school before got married. was working hubby worked full time too. wouldnt change anything except for the constant bickering between them. I am told this is normal though. Were we ready? No but we adapted and made and still make sacrifices for them every day. They are the most important part of my life, I wouldnt give them up for anything. Now they are 13 and 10 and keep us busy with sports and stuff, so in my spare time i am working on my RN so hopefully I can help them with college and stuff when the time comes.

No i do not regret being a nurse. It is truly one of the most rewarding jobs a person could have. also there is bad side to it, sometimes the resdients kick, hit, pinch, spit, slap, bite and all that other stuff. but just to hear a thank you or get a hug from somebody makes it all worthwhile.

So sorry to hear about her loss and suffering. It could have been avoided if Doctor and family were more compliant and willing to work and take care of her like she should have been. Hats off to you, you tried everything you could to help her and give her peace.

When measuring always use centimeters. We have plastic films that we use to measure wounds. length of the wound is measured from head to toes of person or using clock method between 12 and 6. width is side to side or on clock between 9 and 3. hope this helps

congratulations. glad to know there is hope for me yet. been lpn 15 years and working for RN now. hope to be done in next year or so.
