  1. Currently I'm the only Man-Nurse where I work. Fortunately I haven't run into the problems you are having. I do wish for another guy to get hired. Sometimes the estrogen gets a bit thick. -Russell
  2. I have no problem with giving your residents a peck on the cheek. It will make their day. Some never get hugs and kisses if it weren't for the staff who in some cases are the only family they have. -R
  3. I think things are changing. It used to tick me off when my mother in law would always introduce me and say "He is a male nurse". She always said it in a durrogitory (sp) tone. Now I hardly ever hear the term. Are times changing? Now when I tell people I meet that I'm a nurse they usually say "cool" but I can see by their face they are shocked. I guess I don't look the part. -Russell
  4. We didn't have to get naked in the classroom, we did it cause we wanted to. *kidding* You won't have anyproblems with your female pts. I've heard frequently that some prefer men. If you handle yourself in a professional manner you will be fine. -Russell

I think it's a great thing to have a man forum here. Here's a recent guy picture. -Russell
  6. We have a "bug" in the system and are working to get it fixed. In the meantime, use the "quick reply" box. Should be no problem. This is not contagious to anyones computer and is limited to the enhanced reply box. Sorry for the problems. Hope to have it fixed soon. -Russell
  7. I know how to draw blood but it's a rarity that I do it. We have the phlebs who come and do that. It's not that often that we start IV's even. IV team and all that. But if you do have to draw, After the first couple of times it's a breeze. -R
  8. (sigh) There are many, many threads here that address this very issue. You might want to search some of these old threads for insight into this. -Russell
  9. I didn't mean to pull the plug on this thread. Just voicing my thoughts. I know a bit about birth defects. After 20 years my heart is still broken. -Russell
  10. I don't really know if an amnio could pick up this syndrome or not. Is this not a neuro tube defect? I'm not suggesting anything but if these defects are know early enough in the pregnancy then the parents can make a decision. I know not everyone can have a perfect baby. -R

  12. This is why an amniocentesis is always a good idea. very sad situation. -R

  14. Morphene IVP?Just kidding... I like the guitar idea. Also you might consider just telling them Merry Christmas and dress in your best christmas scrubs and a Santa hat. -R

  16. I'd appreciate it. I know nothing about California. I need to be educating myself on the names of cities and their proximity to Hollywood. This is a scary move for me. I'm not a city person by any means but am willing to give this move a try to give my son his shot at acting. The only thing I really know about Ca. is that they have helmet laws (I'm taking my bike too). I suppose that should be my first start. Finding out something of the geography and then where to find employment in that area. I'm looking forward to seeing the ocean and other sites. I'll miss my mountain home and of course my family (those who stay). This will be the first time we are separated. -Russell
  17. Let me tell you... My son is possibly looking to get picked up by an agent and manager for some acting work. He's been into acting for a couple of years and is 13 years old. The agents want him down in Calif. in Jan or Feb (pilot season) so I'm looking for either agency (preferred) or a good LTC facility where I could pick up a flexible noc shift. Any ideas that anyone could share with me would be appreciated. I've already started the process of getting my Calif. license and am looking at getting down there maybe the middle of Jan. I'd also be interested in hearing of places where I could park a RV while we're there. We'd be living in that for a 3 month trial of California. -Russell
  18. What is the status of Lpn's in calif? Is this a reality? Plenty of work? -R
  19. I've never been drug tested. The only folks I know who have are on this board. Must still be an East Coast thing. We don't drug test employees around here anymore. Oh...unless you are going into corrections. Which I guess I could see. -Russell
  20. This is a familiar story. The new nurse is nervous and not very confident and the experienced nurse is not a good preceptor. It is hard to be a good preceptor and your hospital should be choosy who is in that position. Talk to your DON or charge nurse and let them know like you told us here. -R
  21. Whew! Just read through this thread. Sounds to me like a lesbigay nurses assoc. may be good for some. Might even be good for those who are NOT lesbigay to maybe bring up some issues (and it does sound like there are a few) that hetero nurses are not even aware of. I'm the first to admit I'm ignorant about the gay culture. There are other cultures I don't know much about either. As I meet different people then it sparks my interest to learn more about lifestyles. -R
  22. Hi Cheryl, Long time no hear from. I get down to Clovis from time to time. I have a sister down there. You need to get on that bike more. -R
  23. I just can't take the hot summers of Illinois and the midwest. Too dang hot! -R
