  1. Clinical placement! I’m paying lots of money for a quality education so I expect my school to find and vet clinical placements. Medical, dental, PA, Pharm students don’t go around begging people to do clinicals.
  2. On discharge, we go over warning signs to look for during their postpartum period. A handout is also given in their admission folder with big bold red letters of the warning signs. We also tell our new moms to come to our OBED on labor and delivery and bypass the main ED.
  3. If your unit needs a break from this patient, I think it is OK to move her to a different unit. For patients that are non compliant with Dr’s orders, all we can do is educate them and document, document, document. You are not failing this patient. Self care is a must for you and your entire unit.
  4. I was blessed to have older, non traditional students in class with me. They had their life together or at least faked it well. It made me more grounded and not party like the typical young college student!
  5. I don’t want to be a hero! I want my 30 minute uninterrupted lunch break, be able to use the restroom every four hours and leave my water bottle at my work station!
  6. I’ve been a nurse for 30 years. Back in the day, you could actually be a nurse and take proper care of your patients. Now it seems like we are nursing the computer, chart in the right spot for billing and stats, and don’t get me started on scanning meds! Patients are sicker and frankly more “demanding and entitled” but don’t follow thru on Drs orders. If your are unhappy to the point of feeling SI or severely depressed, please get out and take a break! No job is worth your mental health and your well being. Working in a clinic or outpatient or even part time/ PRN can help. Or leave the profession and find your passion. I finally found what I love to do most days and I’m so close to retirement! Life is short! Do what you love!
