  5. Are any of you having any problems with states accepting the online programs? I am looking at the RN-BSN program with Chamberlain...and I am a bit concerned that Georgia will not recognize the program... ??? Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!
  6. These cases can be very serious....I had a new transport arrive at my facility with a very severe case. He had been "dared" to do 500 sits up the night before. No nurse saw him the morning of transport. By the time he arrived here, I had to send him to the ER. He was admitted and ended up on dialysis due to acute kidney failure....so if in doubt...at least check a urine and see what that shows!
  7. That is what I am looking for also. PLease let me know if you find anything like this! Thanks in advance!!
  8. Anyone know of any companies in the Atlanta area that does HEDIS work from home? Thanks in advance!!

  10. I'm a female RN and have worked in a mens' county correctional facility over 5 years now and I love it. Like many here have already stated, it is never boring and it is always challenging to all your nursing skills. The one thing I hate is the look on other nurses' faces when you say you work in a prison. They almost look down on you like you must not be a very good nurse to work there....to me it is the complete opposite! It takes a special person to deal with all the issues you see in this setting.
  11. Welcome to all the new Georgia nurse members!!
  12. I work in a county facility and I am a county employee. I am the only nurse and I am an RN. I do not operate this way! I had to chuckle when you said "one odd thing stood out"...there are WAY more than just ONE ...LOL! Actually kinda scary!
  13. Congrats!! I've been doing Correctional Nursing for 5 years now and I love it. Never boring....that is for sure!! Good luck with the new job!
  14. I have to agree to look elsewhere. That hospital just finished a merger and they have laid off staff. They are planning to build a new hospital by 2010, so it might be an option down the road.....Good Luck!
  15. Good luck with the interview! I have worked in a mens prison for almost 5 years now and I love it.
  16. The same thing that happens after hours when I am not onsite....the officers provide first aid...call 911...whatever the case be. I am on call 24/7, so they call if they need me.
  17. I am the only nurse onsite...so when I am gone...there is no one on site. I have never felt uncomfortable alone with an inmate, but I never let my guard down either...
  18. Welcome...hope you have safe travels!

i am attending an online correctional nursing course, and i would like to receive advice/answers to the following questions: how long was your training prior to working in the prison? i assume you mean training for work in corrections? then none. i walked in and was handed the keys and shown my office. do you feel the the self-defense course offered prepared you for an inmate attack? what self defense course? how would you react to being taken hostage? try to be rational as possible. have you ever had to perform cpr on an employee inside the prison, and if so, what happened? no please answer as soon as possible. thank you!
  20. are you allowed to give protocol meds to inmates and, ifso, could you tell me what some of them are? i have standing orders for things like motrin 800, tetorifice, phenergan, instaglucose, epipen, etc.... how often do you need to see inmates on ranges and conduct sick line with them there? ranges? i do sick call m-f. i do make rounds in isolation 3 times per week and as needed. what do you call maximum-security area? do you run sick line there or is that something only pa's pr physicians do? we don't have max-security. we are a minimum securtiy work camp. we take inmates off site to see md. please feel free to answer. i am very anxious to hear from as many correctional nurses as possible.
  21. infirmary busy? busy times for me are generally during sick call. we are a work camp, so most of the inmates are out working all day. start iv's? no. we are a work camp, so if they are this ill, they are transferred back to a location with 24/7 care. do we house active tb? no, they are housed elsewhere. do you have a "reverse isolation" protocol in your infirmary? we have the means to have one, if needed.
  22. Welcome!!
  23. HI...I'll try to answer what I can. I work in a county prison(work camp) environment. We house about 200 male inmates. I am the only nurse on staff. Typically in a day, I hold sick call about 6:45am. Usually see about 5-15 inmates each morning. Some of those are refills and blood pressure checks. I keep up on TB tests and physicals for the inmates. I give flu shots in the fall. I also provide HBV vaccines and TB testing for the staff. I see emergencies as needed. We go off site to the MD when needed. I go with the inmates when we go to the MD. We have a dental van that comes onsite once per month. I go out on the dental van with the inmates as well. I schedule eye MD appts. An officer goes anywhere with me when we are off site. As for being in the medical dept with me, no officer is usally present. I did not need any "special" training..I am self learning everyday! I read the state policies and Procedures and try to guide my day by these. Hope this helps some. Please feel free to ask any more questions you have! :)
  24. NIce to meet you as well! Where are you in school?
  25. Well, I'm not a student, but I'm in Newnan...not too far from you!
