We have to take the ATI also and pass at 90% otherwise we remediate and must handwrite all of the remediated items missed from the focused review. We have to take it twice a semester in our last semester. But recently heard the third semester student had to take it also.

You are right. I agree with you. That is why I encouraged the student not to given up, even if it means attending another school, transferring,etc. I wish you the best and hang in there be tough. Always know that when one door closes...another may open...it may not always be the same door so keep your eyes alert, your mind open, and your heart in the right place. Best of luck!

My friend is struggling in her program also. She had to take time off and has had to repeat a semester. Her fails are/were warranted. She came forward to discuss her weaknesses and strenghths. She has repeated her semester and I believe is back on track now. I think you should find out the truth from them. Find out what did those incorrect answers to those questions mean to them? And ask what other recourse do you have. Don't give up. Let them know how strong and determined and how willing you are to take a good look and improve and move forward. I wish you luck. Hi, I know where you are at. I was there too, nearly passing. I went to the instructors for help. Also, at our school we have an exam assessment sheet that helps us and the instructors to identify the type of questions I have personally missed. There's a big difference between missing a definition question, misunderstanding a question, a critical thinking question, to a straight application or rationale question. Also, study groups are a definite key to success as a student. I have improved in my grades. Oh, and some of it was test anxiety! Our instructors have given us suggestions to reduce the test anxiety. Stay with it..I had a 69% out of 100 on first test, 70% on the second test and another C- on the third test, after each test, I did the exam/review/assessment with my professors, and my grades have been climbing! I am now at a 79.95%...75% is passing..but I am continue to work harder..the stress level and anxiety goes down because I know exactly where my weaknesses are..that's what you need to find out from your instructors and ask for suggestions..by the way, I read the book too!

Esther, This is my first semester as well. I am too am spending many hours studying. Although I don't have my first test until this Tuesday, and our first week of clinicals are this Tuesday as well. I would be ESTATIC to pull a 'B'. It is hard and different from all the other subjects we have all taken up until this point-they told us that during orientation-they also told us to not go in with pre-conceived ideas of getting 'A's especially if that is what we are accustomed to earning. I am studying long hours working hard and if all I can pull on an exam is a 'C' I would still be happy. Why? Because I know and 'A' does not guarentee someone will be a good nurse. It is a science and the other part of it is that it is an art. Just do your best academically but also know that it isn't about the 'A's. It's about passing-learning the skills and learning the art to become the best nurses we can be.I know because I was like that all through General Education and Pre-reqs, but now, I know I will be satisfied with giving it my all, and now I refuse to let my ego interfere or be a stumbling block to learning theory and rationale and understanding, afterall, it's not about us-but the client.

That's true, the hospitals and schools are indirectly our employers. Our school never advised us in advance so as we were turning in our paperwork, we were being advised to make copies. Many of us do not keep our SSN's with us. I understand and it's not a big deal for me.I was curious why the changes in policy. Thanks for the reply and info.

I start nursing school in Feb! Yeah. I am so excited. I was wondering if anyone: any other nursing schools were requested to submitt copies of their Social Security Number and their California Driver's License? When we asked the nursing dept they stated due to 'Background Checks', to have something to compare them to. Since the school already has that on file, I am perplexed that they would need that information. I was under the impression that the mybackgroundcheck people verified the name and the SSN matched? Hmm. Any thoughts?

I am sorry you have to go through that. It is too bad she has not approached the situation in a more professional way. I can understand about smelling smoke or concentrated perfume on a nurse. As a patient, I became nauseated from this nurse who applied too much perfume. Another time it was a nurse who was a smoker and must have just returned from a break because her breath,hair, skin and uniform wreaked of smoke and made me so sick I was dry heaving. I do think their needs to be some consideration for the patients, but she also needs to approach it in a different way. Best of luck to you.

I am not too sure about Cal State San Bernardino being on the list. Maybe for the LVN-RN RN-BSN or the BSN-MSN programs only. But not for pre-nursing students..I heard the program is impacted and a friend of mine received a letter that she couldn't be admitted due to the fact their program is impacted. So, I don't know if they are referring to the other programs they offer.

I am happy to hear that I am not alone either. I , too, and several students turned in four students for cheating on the Bio Chem lab sheets. They acutally had a used lab book/manual with all of the correct answers for the experiments. They would be deceitful by arriving to lab class set up and start their experiments then copy from the used book and turn their lab sheets in and leave, usually within an hour, when most of us two at least two hours to three to complete everything,including clean-up on certain experiments. When I advised our lab professor, he too, stated he needed to see it in action, so I waited for the next lab meeting, walked up to him and told, he was hesitant too and really didn't want to do anything about it.He, too said that they were failing lab anyways and they would just drop out so it really didn't matter.I told him it goes aganist the colleges' policies. He said he needed to talk to the dept chair first.Finally,he said he would take care of it and went t confront them. They continued to show up, struggled with the experiments, then dropped the class and lab. Lab prof. would return graded lab sheets and exams to us when we arrived early for lab, many times he would give me my lab sheets or tell me he would hand mine back with the rest of the class. Usually, I would receive my exam last. They were alphabetical and my last name is an 'S'. He was also indifferent to me and when I asked questions he gave me unrelated answers or just stated that I needed to read the textbook. I dropped the class and took it over again during Spg semester with a different professor. During lab as she was correcting my lab answers she told that she was proud of me, I was puzzled because I didn't do too good on that experiment,so I said, "Oh for trying and being determined"? She said,"No, for having integrity and ethics, I know you will go far with your life, and sleep well at night"! I also commend you for the choices you made. You do need the support of dept chairs or dept heads to back you up. Best of luck to you..you will make a great nurse!

I have looked all over the internet. Even various chem websites and I could not find the answer. If anyone knows the answer please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the encouragement. I have likewise heard horror stories and discouraging and upsetting stories about the first semester, first year,etc. I start school in January. I am currently taking an O-chem class and have sat around near the nursing students while in the cafeteria and hear them complain about differing procedures between what was taught and what is actually done in the hospital. Which I could expect that, but they complained about the nurses who berated the students calling them 'stupid' for following the procedures they were taught. Hmm. I know that will be experienced in all jobs, irregardless, but I would like to think that there would be a way the clinic directors and the nursing instructors could or would arrange a happy medium or teach to the procedures of that particular hospital. What do some of you think?

I received a lot of comments from my former coworkers during and after I completed my A.S. and A.A. degrees. It seems they think since I spent so much time in school that I should be a nurse by now or have a master's degree. It is hard to work and go to school. Some of them realized after I left to finish up my last pre-req. I inspired one person to return and finish her hours for medical massage school because she stated that I stood strong and never let any of their comments bother me.(Eventhough on the inside it did hurt coming from friends). I don't know how many people have scarcastically wished me a "good luck," and have said,"so and so tried and didn't make it through". I know it will be tough, but I am determined to try. I know it will be a difficult program and I am ready.

Wow! You think 26yrs old is too old to go back to school? I am 43, and still waiting to be accepted into a nursing program. I returned to school five years ago. I am proud of my accomplishments, and my previous job working for an airline, and the invaluable experience has only added to my interpersonal skills and the ability to work under stressful conditions.Like working with difficult pilots(sky gods), difficult passengers and difficult co-workers. A friend of mine graduated after a long absence, from nursing school at the age of 52. So, don't ever let anyone put any doubts in your head. Good luck.

Hi, I was also looking at those shoes, too. I am a pre-nursing student, I will be starting in January!! wAH-HOO!! And, I was looking for a comfortable shoe. When I went on vacation this last summer with my boyfriend, we walked so much and both of our arches and heels hurt-most of the walking was on concrete,asphalt and brick/cobblestone. I am seriously thinking about buying them. For those who did purchase a pair, do you really feel a noticable difference? Please give us your opinion if you had foot pain and now it has diminished..thanks.

I just finished my first week in Organic Chemistry. WOW. It sure is different from Inorganic Chemistry. I think it's interesting, I just need to keep up on the reading and figure a way to study the material and put it all together. So, I am definitely interested in joining a study group too. We can exchange study tips, simplify some of the materials by examples/analogies, etc. Great! Let's do it!

I took Intro to Organic/Bio but dropped it because of the instructor simply power pointed too quickly through the chapters. But mainly because the school had no tutors. So, I am will be trying to add the course at another college-another community college that has 3 hrs of free tutoring services!

It looks like I will be receiving my letters from one of these colleges soon. I prefer RCC since I live in Riverside, but I hear SBVC is an excellent program as well. I am so excited. Does anyone have any suggestions what else I can do to prepare for my first day of nursing?

So I understand what is involved,plus I have a cousin and two friends who are nurses. My last comment about having insight and great strength was directed to Crispi, and not myself, sorry about that. I know you have made a wise choice and I commend and applaud you.So, here it is: Crispi you have insight and great strength to realize your place and when you are called to be in a different area. Hi, I agree with 4yrstogo(Lisa). It is a little unsettling to read that post, but I can understand where chrispicritah is coming from- I left my job with the airlines as a customer service agent after 19yrs! I did love my job, but many aspects of it I did not. Okay, so like any job, however, I had always wanted to be a nurse and it took me many years to get to the payscale where I could afford to go to school. Now that I am finished with my pre-reqs, I am waiting anxiously for those acceptance letter, or waitlist numbers. I am 42 and I know I have grown and evolved and I am now ready for the healthcare field. I also look at it as, I wanted something more meaningful. Rather than provide a service I wanted to be of service. It is hard to leave a job and admit we are burned out. With me, the job at the airlines was not challenging for me. It takes insight to know when to leave, and great strength to leave. -Julie

Here, in Southern California-San Bernardino County and Riverside County all the schools have a two year waitlist! I know I am on one of them and will be on most of them in August. I have my A.S. degree already so I am hoping it will bring me closer to the top of the applicants-I heard it does for some colleges. It's too bad, so many students waiting to get into a program-one local college had 387 applicants for this past Fall Semester.
