Umm...I will have 47 residence to care for !!!!!
This past Sat. the wing was short as per usual on the week-ends (all full time RNs are off) there was not an Lpn to work with me and the part time Rn was physically unable to do a med pass .So after a very sleepless night of trying to figure out How I lil old me was gonna do a med pass to 60 sixty people with out being out of complience. I prob slept 3 hours and Just decided I would put my big girl panties on and do it but that the RN would have to do Tx, Tubes (5) and br tx as I figured by the time I located all the ones that had left the wing It would be time for lunch pass.It was this moment that I also decided Im taking A&p in the fall and hope full by the time Im 52 I'll have every week end off. Im 48 now and the steady income at home,as my hubbys is dependant on the weather. Im venting can you tell..........

How do you deal with seeing a dead body?
Ive worked in a nursing home 16 years and have seen to many fine people expire but I have always felt that most of the folks I take care of are of a generation that were faithful to God and more than likely have a relationship with him and are heaven bound .Now with good minds and whole bodies .My biggest thing was I never wanted them to die alone and so many of them had out lived their families.I pulled chart racks into rooms years ago and sat at bedsides to chart for that very reason.I wont say it gets easier but you learn to cope and there gets to be a little shell around you that prevents you from being to emotional if its some-one you have built a relationship with.Just do the kindest care even post mortem that if some one were watching thay would know you respect and consider it a priviledge to provide that last little bit of human care their body will ever recieve

Please Help! Encouragement needed
Congrats and welcome to the lovely world of LTC.I promise that you will get a flow but you sound as if your already about on the average.A morning med pass is the toughest because thats when most meds are given,But you will learn the little tricks to save time with each resident and soon you will have an easier time .Again Good Luck.I LOVE LTC and feel its my calling, and cant see myself any where else.To know that people trust me enough to intrust their parent into my care means alot......

LTC ...I have a question
I would expect my cnas to change an incontinent brief every 2 hours.res should be cleaned with mild soap and water and moisture barrier applied past each episode and NO-ONE is to sleep in a incontinent brief unless they have a history of playing in stool. My therory is "A butts gotta breathe"

New to LTC. Any tips for me?
1)make sure your diabetics get their hs snacks 2)trust your instincts if you think some ones going bad they are 3) if they are not a dnr and are going bad get them out of there quickly 4)learn from your cnas they do more 1:1 with the residents and they notice changes quickly 5)pace your self find some thing about a resident that will put them in your memory and so that wont be just that little old lady with grey hair and glasses(that describes most of them) good luck I love working at ltc facility and I adore my residents, only problemis sometimes I get my heart broke cause I meet them so late in lifebut all in all its worth it.... :nurse:

Old nurses dont want to learn new tricks?
truth is what ever field you opt to work this is usually your calling.Young or old nurses have to have a certain temperment to work say LTC or L/D.I could not work ER but I can answer the same Question by a demented resident with the same tone of voice the 20th time as I did the 1st. Can every one say the same???My new charge nurse is only out of school 9 months and Ive learned alot from her but if you ask her she will prob tell you shes learned as much from me with my 15 years experience...

I Need Advice from Experienced Nurses...
I love being an LPN and am 47 didnt become a nurse until in my early 30s but if I had to do it all over again I would go the RN route simply because so many facilities are phasing out LPNs Each year the board of Nursing in my state says there is another thing that is beyond my scope and I cant tell you how hard it it to change your mind set on what you could do yesterday but cant do today. My advice even at 50 complete LPN schoo; then do the upgrade program 1 year of school and become an RN..

Is 'E.R' the tv show accurate?
I love ER Cried when Mark Greene died and when He delivered the baby and mom had PIC But being a nurse I notice all the errors Nurse sticks 2 syringes in pocket one kcl, one ns and gives a small child wrong one or seizure patient with no siderails .The 1st mistake on purpose 2nd one not.I love the characters and the outside stories but love to see these lay folks talk the lingo.I also love male lpn that will tell snotty rn " its beyond my scope" got a kick out of that...

LPNs at my facility feel they are being direspected
Two months ago I could stage a decub then all the sudden we were told only RNs could. Fine with me less charting how ever my 3 month grad RN charge nurse almost looses her mind ever monday when she has to do all the measurements and for goodness sake dont let her be off on a monday because then even if Im the charge nurse I have to pull the RN from another hall and she has to do the ones on her hall as well as the ones on mine.By the way Ive been an LPN 15 years..Guess they think we (lpn) all lost our ability to stage at the same time .Sure its policy but they are really over working the RNs when they could really utilize us in better ways...

Graduate nurse never inserted foley :/
was taught that when you use the betadine swabs to clean further away then near toyou ,with the third one clean down the center do a little twist (not the chubby checker kind) and the betadine will slightly pool at the urethra( did I spell that right) I worked part time at hosp but full time at ltc and they would come get me for difficult caths cause I did it so much.

I Double Dawg Dare You, Do It!
As an aide I took care of a lady named MeaMea she had 1 daughter 2 twin granddaughters and a grandson. Well when one of the grand-daughters got married I took her as a favor and we joked that I was her date. I was in the family photos and I took her back to the nursing home and she was back before she tired out and the daughter got to enjoy her daughters wedding.Any way to make a long story short I became a nurse moved to a different wing and when MeaMea got very very ill had a huge huge decub and was almost non verbal. When I walked in the room she said "theres my Barbara" I cried after I stepped into the hallway.A Cna said Thats so unprofessionally.I told her When I quit crying that will be un professional and time to give it up...

Umm...I will have 47 residence to care for !!!!!
Wish when I started that I only had 47...try 60.. 30 each hall.Even with the 1 hour before 1 hour after rule I was sunk 8a to 10 a for begging conjoiling bribing getting hit pinched bit cursed...(that was an easy day) and get those folks to take med. I had a charge nuse who took care of every thing else. Now 11 years later I work those same halls only now have a 2nd med nurse and I only give to those 30 residents, they are much more confused less cognitively able to take meds in TEXT BOOK manner so I still beg plead get beat and those 30 take the same 2 hours more PEGS with bolus feedings I very much understand where your coming from but do you have a charge nurse and what did the nurses that trained you say about how they did it..

Medication aides taking nursing jobs?
A facility in the town where I live (assisted living) had its meds given by aides not even cnas just aides. A friend that was an LPN at the LTC facility where I worked decided to step up and out and be the nurse manager at this facility ,a position that an LPN could do because this facility was NOT a nursing home and there fore not under same guide lines .When she got there narcotics were mixed in with rest of meds, not under lock and key and because the ones giving pills had no clue about reactions and side effects restoril, ambien and a xanax may all be giving at one time cause MOMMA doesnt know to tell you she didnt take all 3 at one time, meds that had been long d/ced were given along with the drug that was prescribed to replace it because the aide didnt realize the Mrs smith didnt need to take 5 bp pills and 3 diuretics and no k+ replacement. My friend freaked began calling doctors to find out what had been dced and what this person should be on. Needless to say she turned in her notice and came back to LTC. Stated " I aint going out like this" Couldnt blame her..Ya gotta have guidelines ..
