In answer to your original question: would you go to the ER for this? In one word, NO. An ER visit is costly whether you have insurance or not....a PCP or urgent care clinic HAS to be a lot cheaper, and our local free clinic always has a provider/triage nurse on call. Even if yours doesn't, a lot of ER's and hospitals have in-house triage you can call and ask. I think people need to realize that emergency room visits are for "life threatening" not "more convenient to my schedule" visits. Hence the name, EMERGENCY-if I called 911 about a boil, they would laugh in my face!

Maybe I missed it, but has the original poster replied to questions (i.e....the current health of mom/baby etc...)?????????? In the abscence of that, I think whomever originally posted this thread is just trying to fire people up. Just my 2 cents......

Thanks for your really great replies....Blee-I too am not the kind that goes ga-ga over other peoples babies, and the only kids I really like are my own!! However, I am told that I am great with kids (though I think not) so now this is the plan: I will go ahead and get my RN. I think that I will only work per diem, not full-time. Nursing school will be bad enough on the wee ones, I don't think its fair to go full-time immediately after nursing school unless its absolutely necessary. Then, if things move smoothly, I will go back and get my BSN and teaching credentials. My family is my #1 priority & I don't want to miss out on their growing up years, but mommy is going to need a life too! Thanks everyone!

In a nutshell, I am at a crossroads educationally. I have always wanted to be a nurse, have been a nurses aide, am currently taking pre-reqs for RN program ( that can also apply to an education degree) HOWEVER...... Now I am starting to think that with 4 & 10 year olds, teaching is a better option (no summers/weekends/holidays, off when the kids are off, etc...) but its 2 MORE years of schooling to be a teacher. And the money is good in teaching but the money is better in nursing. I have thought about being a school nurse, but jobs of that nature just aren't that plentiful where I live, especially if you have an associate degree vs. a bachelors in nursing. I have a few more classes to take that can be used for either major, and then I have to REALLY decide. Can anyone give me some input? Dear hubby just says "whatever makes you happy" but I would like impartial opinons! FYI: I am currently a preschool teacher in my daughters school and really like because of the above reasons, but nursing holds great appeal to me because of the money and because of my great interest in medicine/helping people thru those times. HELP!

My sociology book (Sociology in a Changing World 7th ed. by William Kornblum) defines a profession as....."an occupation with a body or recognized knowledge and a developed intellectual techniques. Its knowledge is transmitted by a formal educational process, and entry into the profession is regulated by testing procedures. Most professions are licensed by the state. This definition can be applied to.....doctors, attorneys...nurses." If that doesn't defined licensed nursing, I don't know what does. I refuse to get into a battle of the wits with this person, because he is most assuredly UNARMED!!! I guess the next time he needs an I.V. or catheter, he can do it himself, since we obviously aren't PROFESSIONALS, an amateur can do it. What does that commercial say...Amateurs practice till they get it right, professionals practice till they can't get it wrong. THATS nursing!

I am doing the one-a-semester route...started with Music last Spring, then Develpmental Psych over the summer...in Sociology now and planning on English Comp/Speech this Spring. The only draw backs I can see are [1] how long the classes are good for and[2] financial aid might not pay if you arent taking at least 12 credit hours a semester...since I am doing pre-reqs early, I can't qualify because I will only be taking the Nursing stuff and thats only 10 hours total/semester. HELLO FELLOW SLOWPOKES! RN in 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds gross, but I remember my mom giving me un-gelled warm Jello to drink....also, sucking on a wet washcloth....what about Gatorade or maybe Sprite with food coloring (blue for Blues Clues or red for Elmo??). A Coke float (ice cream w/ Coke on top). Just my 2 cents Keep us posted...hope little one is feeling better soon.

Hello fellow "oldies"!!!! I turned 34 yesterday...I have a 10 year old and a 4.5 year old.....I just went back to work part-time at my daughters pre-school for some extra cash after being a SAHM for the past 6.5 years....there's been a lot to get used to! I am currently knocking out pre-reqs....will take A&P next fall and hopefully start the nursing program fall of '08. Good luck to everyone!

Hello- When working in LTC facility, I always breathed thru my mouth while chewing gum or a mint at the same time....it really helped me not to gag.j Or you could stick cotton up your nose and tell everyone you are having severe nasal problems ...ha ha!

Oh I forgot... My friend is from Scotland and she named her daughter Albany, which means "illusion of Scotland" in Gaelic (or something). I think its pretty because its so meaningful.

my name is shawna......my mom thought she was gonna have twins so it was gonna be shawn/shawna....just me though! i named my 2 daughters sydney (before it caught on) and ellie. our last name is french so they sound really good with it. syd is name after a great-uncle that died (i actually considered the name bunny for her-a stripper name if i ever heard one!) and i think of ellie mae clampett or miss ellie on dallas when i hear that name..it always makes me smile....ellie was named after my grandfather ellis and for all of those reasons thats how she got her name. about 10 years ago there was a name association book about what people thought when they heard certain names....for example, and these are their words, not mine, the names crystal, brandy, or lexi were associated with people of lower income/education etc... my daughter sydneys name gave the impression of a person being strong-willed, fun, a partier. again, paraphrasing the book-not my opinion! its definately an interesting read...i am sure there are copies or similar versions somewhere. i'm sure they don't have good things to say about the name ellie! but we like it and there is a history behind it..i didn't just pick it out of a romance novel or something!

RN-2010 is my mantra too! I've got it on the welcome screen of my cell phone! Its really easy to get discouraged-2010 sounds like such a looooonnnng time away-but 2007 is just around the corner, you know? We've all got to keep our chins up and support one another. I live in Virginia; a wife & mother to a 4-year old and 10-year old. Right now I am currently finishing up pre-reqs for the associate degree...then its onto the nursing/clinical protion classes in the fall of 2008!!! My plan B is if I don't pass the entrance test to nursing school, I will enroll in a local LPN prgram and bridge in. Am currently taking Develpmental Psych & Sociology. Will take English Comp, Public Speaking, and Computer Literacy in the spring/summer...I am saving A & P until next fall, so I don't have to work while going to school! I was 5 months pregnant with my daughter....my husbands grandfather had died just a few days earlier. With all of these emotions on top of my pregnancy, there were several times when I thought the world was coming to an end. Just a terrible time but we have persevered.

Point taken..At my local college they don't expire..but.. CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL COLLEGE..you may need or not need to hurry based on THEIR REQUIREMENTS. There are 4 nursing schools in a 20 mile radius, state supported and they ALL have different requirements for their school.

33 year old SAHM here to a 10 year old and 4 year old. The plan has been to take 1 class a semester to keep our expenses down and my GPA up. When little one is in preschool this fall, I will work 30 hours a week and take 1 online class in the fall and in the spring. Then in the fall of 2007 when little one goes to kindergarten, thats when I will go on campus for the first time for A&P I....may or may not keep working while taking A&P..if I do, it will be a very part time job. EVERYONE has told me not to work or take any other classes with A&P. In May 2010 I will graduate...I figure the next 3.5 years are gonna fly by anyway, why not be a nurse at the end of all of it? And to those contemplating whether to start their nursing pre-req journey, I advise you to take it slow and keep that GPA up. That way you will have time for family and for school and shortchange neither. DONT RUSH unless you need to....your credits won't expire! Also, I take things that require papers like English 111 and Psych/Soc in the winter when I am inside more and feel like devoting more time to those things instead of wanting to be outside in the weather when its nice!

Are you going for the associates degree? Have you got all your pre-reqs out of the way? I am in SW Va and my community college has online/distance education classes that are offered..I figured I can probably take at least 6 or 7 of the required classes at home before I even step foot on campus-and the credits are good for a lifetime! I hope to begin the oncampus stuff when little one goes to preschool/kindergarten next year. Then I can get a weekend job or a job that works around my school schedule.

This fall its just gonna be Sociology...I am finishing up my Developmental Psych right now and took Music (!!) and College Success Skills this past spring. (All of these are online classes) If I just keep knocking these pre-reqs out a course at a time, I should be ready for A&P I/II fall 2007/spring 2008. Then I can apply to start the nursing classes the fall of 2008.....I am a stay at home mom and this way I can go on campus when little one starts kindergarten. These next 4 years are gonna fly by anyway...why not be a nurse at the end of it all! Good luck everyone!:balloons:

Thanks for the advice...thats what I am planning on doing. I am a mom to a 10 year old and 4 year old....won't start the nursing sequence (hopefully) until little one goes to kindergarten. Just wondering-How strict are the instructors on abscences? I am a realis-I know one of my kids will be sick on a lecture/lab day and even though it will kill me, family does come first, especially the little ones!

Anyone attending New River, Virginia Western or Wytheville CC's? Will be taking Developmental Psych this summer and this coming fall/spring, A & P I/II here I come! Hope to be starting NRCC when I pass the NET March 2007. That made me so mad they did away with the waiting list, although I can see their point. Just wish they had done it after I had gotten in! If anyone has any pointers/comments/complaints about the ADN at these SWVA schools, please feel free to post. Most of the other posters are for the NOVA/Tidewater areas. Hello- I think everyone has something that gets to them...it doesn't mean you aren't cut out to be a nurse. The thing that gets to me is little kids crying...I can deal with vomit, BM's, mucus, oozing sore-all kinds of stuff...but the sound of a kid crying just makes me want to run in a corner and hide (but I don't!) I am not interested ER or Peds work for that very reason. But I know I am gonna make one heck of an orthopedic or med/surg nurse! I have a friend who cannot stand the sight of snot-she shudders when someone sneezes! So chin up-you are fine!

My local Wal-Mart had these nice semi-hevy plum colored drapes...but I bought almost the exact same thing at my local Family Dollar for 1/2 the price. Those coupled with green venetian blinds and my eye mask make it pitch dark. My husband was late for church the first Sunday we had them-he woke up and it was 11am-he couldn't believe how dark it was! And they look nice too.

No, girl, you are not crazy. I see a lot of me in your story. I am a stay at home mom and I have wanted to be a nurse since I was in my teens but always had an excuse NOT to go...newly married, cost too much, new baby, cost too much, etc:chuckle ...... The fact is that the next 5 or 6 years are gonna go by really fast-whether or not you take the plunge. I finally decided that this semester is THE YEAR and I am starting my prerequisite courses next week-which are 95% completed at home as distance education. I am timing it out so that I start the Anatomy I & II class when my youngest goes to kindergarten (and thats the only class I take that semester, at the reccomendation of my advisor, since I have family obligations) and start the nursing clinicals/labs when little one is in 1st-2nd grade-that way I am in school when she is, and I can be home when she gets there. I am probably not gonna graduate until 2010 unless something drastic happens, but like I said, each year I put it off is one more year until I graduate.
