I'm trying for the June Jouston cohort - was originally looking at July but got my prereqs done early.. Took the Teas, got a 94 (89.4 reading).. they make the June decision sometime within the first two weeks of April (so I have heard)...

I realize this subject is a bit stale, but: Straighterline is NOT accredited in the way nursing schools are accredited. While some universities/colleges have agreements/partnerships with straighterline and will give credit for straighterline classes, not all do. Check with the college you wish to attend first. WGU happens to have some equivalency courses with straighterline.

The way it was put to me, at age 52 starting another 4+ year educational journey: If I *don't* do it, how will I be in 4 years?

I'm a chiropractor and was introduced to Excelsior's Medic-RN(ASN) program through MidAmerica learning. I actually started the paramedic program in preparation for Excelsior, thinking that was really the only "quick route" to my goal of becoming an NP. As I started doing more and more reading about Excelsior and their program (all the while doing the paramedic program) I became more and more hesitant. I found that while the logic of the steps through MidAmerica's/Excelsior's program made sense on the surface, once you scratched the surface of Excelsior's program things started to fall apart. IMO Excelsior has a reputation issue due to two issues: 1) Several states either a) won't license you as a nurse if you were educated as a nurse at Excelsior or b) have extensive requirements if you were educated in nursing there. 2) The CPNE is an Excelsior-only non-standardized clinical experience. It is expensive, and due to wait-time and scheduling you can wait UP TO A YEAR after you finish your didactic program to take the test. That's a YEAR -- forgetting things, waiting, fretting. The test will cost a person upwards to $3k to take, notwithstanding any fees for a 'prep course' (for a non-standardized, proprietary test!). With a relatively low test pass-rate, you're very likely to have to take the test a second time -- introducing ANOTHER year, and costing ANOTHER $3k. Oh, and all the while you're still paying Excelsior's maintenance fees. All of this information is derived from conversations with Excelsior's admissions counsellor and from searching on the internet. I've been through a very intensive clinical education with standardized clinical examinations and 4-part national board examinations. In comparison Excelsior's attempt falls significantly short of acceptable (in my estimation) so I looked elsewhere for another possibility. I found an alternative in WGU's pre-licensure BSN program which will end up getting me to my goal in about the same period without the major headaches. Some schools have partnership with things like Straighterline.com or study.com, which can help get some (equivalent) courses out of the way. Ask your enrollment counsellor if they have such a partnership.

Actually I have not looked into that as I didn't even know such an option existed for a chiropractor without a nursing license or nursing degree. Which ones are you thinking of so that I can research a little?

I haven't found any (yet) that are online based, however there are several non-Texas based programs that are online, e.g. Simmons and Herzing.

I am a DC and, due to a number of opportunities that have become available to me, am embarking on a course to become an NP. I looked into Excelsior via MidAmerica Learning and, for a while, was going to go that way. That is, until I learned of 1) several issues with Excelsior and state licensing and 2) the CPNE. #1 was something that was a major red flag to me. #2 The CPNE had several flaws. 1) It is a non-standardized test that ONLY Excelsior has, 2) the ability to schedule the test in a reasonable period of time is of great question, 3) the pass rate for the test is of issue. For a test of this caliber to be non-standardized AND cost this much is ridiculous. The inconsistencies I have read about regarding the structure and execution of this test make it extremely subjective in an unrealistic environment. I was quoted (by Excelsior!) that it takes up to 14 MONTHS after requesting this exam to get scheduled, and that you are not allowed to request the exam until ALL requirements have been met and finalized. That means I'm sitting on my thumbs for about a year -- waiting, forgetting, stressing, paying the college (yes, you still have to pay while you are waiting) for a test which, after all is said and done, will cost about $3k. With the pass rate, it is equally likely that I will have to take the exam more than once, introducing ANOTHER delay, more maintenance fees to the school and ANOTHER $3k. I realize that there are those that have made it through in one pass. Likely I would as well considering past experience/GPA with chiropractic school and clinical/board exams. But the forecasted delay along with all the other issues with Excel just made me rethink my choices -- I am going with a pre-licensure program at Western Governor's.
