  1. I am in my first semester of the RN-BSN program at Metro. I have had a great experience so far. I found the admissions staff very helpful and responsive and did not have any trouble with communication back and forth. As far as the admissions requirements, they provided a very clear list of what was needed. I simply printed the list and marked off each item as I turned it in. My impression of the instructors is that they are very dedicated to teaching and are very enthusiastic. I'm taking 3 courses, with 3 different instructors and would definitely take courses from them again. All in all, my experience has been nothing but positive and I look forward to the rest of my time at Metro!
  2. Did you mean for this to be in the California forum?
  3. thank you, i had not seen this before. i think it will be very helpful. thanks for taking the time to post!! :heartbeat:d:heartbeat:d:heartbeat
  4. i'm a second year student with 6 weeks left in my last semester. here are two books that i would recommend. diseases and disorders: a nursing therapeutics manual by sommers, johnson, beery isbn 0803613377 i got this book at the end of last semester and really wish that i had found it sooner. it has the patho, causes, life span considerations, assessment, nursing diagnoses, labs and tests, independent and collaborative interventions for each disease or condition. this is a book that i will refer to often in my practice. it would have been great to have when i was taking med/surg, as it gives a great overview of each condition. this has been most handy during clinicals, i keep it in my bag and refer to it often. i definitely recommend this book! another book that i have found quite helpful was: visual nursing: a guide to diseases, skills, and treatments by springhouse isbn 1582556822 this book has great illustrations and diagrams that really simplify the various conditions. this also has labs and tests with great explanations. it's a good book that really simplifies the concepts and is great to use along with a med/surg text. good luck, all!! :heartbeat:d:heartbeat:d:heartbeat
  5. serlait, very well said. i'm in my last semester of school and have come to appreciate the fact that the patient's really do depend on us, often it is at a very low point in their day/life. we can make the difference in how their experience impacts them. :heartbeat:d:heartbeat:d:heartbeat
  6. askingnurse: i think you're asking very important questions in your posts. i attended platt for a short time and found that there were many issues. issues that i just could not overlook. i am especially worried about the number of students that complete the course in relation to how many start. it is disturbing to think that the recent classes graduated less than 10 students, from what i am reading in prior posts. keep asking questions and find out as much as you can about any program that you might be considering. all the best to you and i look forward to replies from more of the platt students. :heartbeat:d:heartbeat:d:heartbeat
  7. good luck and congratulations to you on beginning this phase of your journey to nursing! :heartbeat:d:heartbeat:d:heartbeat
  8. i thought it was regarding edema, too! don't know what that might mean regarding blood. hmmmm.....mystery! :heartbeat:d:heartbeat:d:heartbeat
  9. i also use saunders, not because i have a preference....it was required for my program. the main thing with any of the nclex review books is to use it. use the cd that comes with the book with the practice questions. they help so much because you can read the rationale for each question, which helps to gain a better understanding of the "why" behind the questions. our instructor has us turn in our score from 100 practice questions for each system that we cover throughout the semester. i really think that miles and miles of questions help, practice for tests in class and for the nclex. so, get a review book and use it frequently...even if that means having it out on the counter when you're making dinner and glancing at it, taking a peek while you brush your teeth, or any other time you have a couple minutes!! it will definitely benefit you in the end! good luck to you!! :heartbeat:d:heartbeat:d:heartbeat
  10. hi all, just wondering if the platt class that was set to be finished soon is done? if so, have any of you taken the nclex? how about jobs? i hope all is well and would love an update!! :heartbeat:clown::heartbeat:clown::heartbeat
  11. psychonaut, you are the type of nurse that i had hoped to work with during clinicals. unfortunately, in my area there don't seem to be many nurses that like to have students. i will be finished in may as an associate degree rn and am very nervous about the fact that most of my clinical hours to this point have not included much interaction with my nurses. i guess in my mind i thought that the clinical experience would include seeing my primary nurse in action - so that i could learn techniques on the floor from my nurse. someday, when i have more experience under my belt i will welcome students for the same reason you are empathetic to students. we have all been students at some point. it's easy to forget that sometimes. :heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat:nurse:
  12. i didn't lose my job because of school, but i did have to reduce my hours because of school. school comes first, in my book. because my program is full time, i cut back from 40 hours to 20 hours the first semester of my 2 year program. second semester i had to cut down to 15 hours a week. because my job was tied to the financial markets, i had to work during the day and it became too difficult to even work 15 hours a week. so, what i did was apply at the hospital in hope of a job where i could study during the downtime. this might be something you could consider. i got a job as a ward clerk in the hospital. they are 12 hour shifts, but my boss knows that i'm in nursing school and is very flexible when it comes to school. no, i don't make as much money as i did before (less than half) but i'm still working and it's related to what i am studying. you'll know what's best for you....nursing school is a temporary situation. some days it seems like it takes forever, other days it seems like it's going by in a flash. you can do it! it's so worth it. i'll be done in may and you'll get through it, too!!! :heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat
  13. i'm taking it tomorrow, too! good luck to you. i hope all goes well, i'm sure it will.... deep breaths when you get nervous and remember....you've worked hard and you've learned a lot, you can do this!!! :heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat:nurse:
  14. i just mailed my application and transcripts today for lpn licensure by examination. my understanding is that it takes about 10 days or so for it to be processed. at that point, we can schedule to take the nclex-pn. on the board of nursing site, they do have faq section: http://www.dora.state.co.us/nursing/faqs.htm looks like the first question will help....we will be able to check our application status online. on the application checklist it does say to wait 10 days before you check so that you can ensure it's in the system. my school told us it would be good to go ahead and register on the pearson site for nclex so that once our license application goes through we can schedule the test. today, while i was filling out my paperwork i had to call the board of nursing with a question and someone answered the phone right away and helped me with what i needed....so, i'm sure you could call with any questions. hope this helps a little. in the meantime, take practice tests, refresh youself with lab values, and think positive nclex thoughts!! good luck on the test!! :heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat:nurse:
  15. your best bet would be to contact them directly to see about prices: http://www.snow.com/passsales/ good luck with your travel assignment plans, hope to see you out there making turns this winter!!! :heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat:nurse:
  16. oops, i left out a word in my above posting: do you know how many students were in the first graduating class? sorry! didn't make much sense without "how" in there
  17. cololab*21, just like any school, platt is good for some people and not for others. it is mentioned in your post that people are starting "nasty rumors." i've posted previously about my experience at platt. what i posted was my experience, not a rumor. in my case, it was not a positive experience. that was my experience and i chose to share it. i'm sure that there are students, such as youself that are enjoying your experience at platt and are proud to call platt your school. perhaps more of the students with positive experiences should post, if the school has changed or is better than my experience...tell everyone! i know i would! i'm curious. do you know many students were in the first graduating class? have any of those students taken the nclex yet, or is it too soon? i hope they do well on the nclex, it's difficult and is the true test of knowledge gained. does this mean they platt is now fully accredited, or do they have more requirements? i wish those new nurses the best of luck in nursing and in their careers, in whatever direction they choose to go. good luck to you, as well! i'm glad to hear that your experience is a good one!
  18. smiley89, just curious, are you still in the program? i left the program after i had started...hopefully they'll work things out and graduate some good nurses. for me, it wasn't worth it. i'm in agreement with you, "save your $$$ and run!!!" good luck with your schooling!!
  19. my husband uses light rail to get to work each day. he absolutely loves it. for you as a student, it will be wonderful. think about it....no traffic stresses, no parking fees, gas $avings, and you will have the time in both directions to study! i'm going to school in southern colorado, so it's not an option for me, but i can guarantee that if i'm able to use it when i'm back in the metro area and working...i'll definitely use light rail! :nurse:

my goodness!! i guess the days of the "milk man" being the father are over!! how very modern, the schwans man!! wow! all i can say is that i hope those babies were loved and cared for and had all that they needed in life. :redbeathe:nurse::redbeathe
  21. wildchipmunk, congratulations on attending regis university. it is an excellent school with an excellent reputation. i'm sure that regis will provide you with the knowledge and skills that will allow you to be a very successful nurse! perhaps we will work together someday!! :nurse: :nurse: :nurse:
  22. wildchipmunk....the information you stated is absolutely correct. i only wish that i had known more about the school before i started at platt. i asked all the important questions and weighed the pros and cons that i learned about the program. i then made my decision. i attended platt for a short period of time. i thought i could continue and "give it a chance," knowing that there were some issues with the program. i feel that some of the information that was presented at my info session was not necessarily accurate. i finally had to decide....stay or leave the program. i opted to leave and was not the first in my class to leave, nor the last. my former classmates have continued and i wish them the best. they will be great nurses someday, it is just a shame that there might be problems with their credits being accepted by other institutions. i am now in a community college program and absolutely love it. i have such a different feeling about nursing school after attending platt and moving onto another program. perhaps platt will get their accrediation and eventually the credits will be transferrable. until then, i wish the platt students all the best.
  23. I have white danskos and just use whatever cleaner I happen to have under my kitchen sink. 409, Pine Sol...any of 'em will do. Just put some on a paper towel and scrub a dub! Works for me, haven't seen any damage to the shoes. With the price of Danskos, I'd rather buy new ones for fun instead of white ones over and over!! :)
  24. I go to Pueblo Community College, I'm first year. We had to take the ERI for Fundamentals and Pharm. To pass, we had to achieve the national average or better. If we didn't pass, we could take a second time. Some of my classmates have to take them again because they didn't pass the first time. Not passing doesn't mean we're out of the program, it just shows our instructors areas that either we as students didn't understand, or perhaps areas that just weren't covered in class. ERI tests aren't scary, just a little intimidating because there are concepts that we haven't had yet. There are practice tests on the site, which are a good way to get a little experience before taking the ERI. Good luck!!!
