Passed second time using Kaplan

I am living proof that all the myths of the NCLEX are just that.....myths. I tested my second time on Thursday. I was really confident when I took the test and I just knew that it was going to shut off at 75 questions. However, once I hit the parking lot I realized that the test was too easy which was not a good sign. So the next 48 hours were spent believing that I had bombed the test because I left feeling good initially and that I thought the questions were too easy. Well I passed and this morning my license number is on the state board of nursing. Please believe me when I tell you that you can and will accomplish this. Do not ever give up even if you don't accomplish the first time. This is a dragon that can be slain.

My first test I read Princeton review, Kaplan strategies, and Saunders 4th edition. I read these all cover to cover and took all the in book tests and practice sessions. However, I did not spend enough time answering questions and figuring out how to critically think through them. I had all 265 questions and it took me just two minutes shy of the full six hours. It was a horrible experience. But I had to shake it off because I had to conquer round two.

The second time I used Kaplan online complete. I did not have enough time for Susan's plan as I was running out of time before I had to reapply and register with the state. My stated allowed me test within two weeks of my expiration date which I did by just one day. This still gave me two months to study. I read the Kaplan course book, watched all the content videos while I followed along in the course book and took notes, then I watched all the classroom question videos. When I watched these videos I would pause the question after it was read and answer it for myself and then unpause to see if my thinking was correct. After that I had two weeks before test date and went by Kaplan's two week plan. I did around 150 questions a day and trainers 4-7. In areas I was weak I spend a little time watching content videos again. These questions are great practice and I believe the reason I had confidence this go round and was able to pass.

Feeling confident is a major thing that will enable you to breath through and think about each question on your NCLEX. If you start stressing close your eyes, relax and envision yourself as a nurse. YOU CAN DO THIS. I don't know if Kaplan's questions were just worse, they gave me the test for dummies, or it was all just content I knew well but I passed.

Good luck to you all!!!!! :heartbeat

Amber,

Thanks for your post. I too failed the first time with 265 q. I am in the process of trying to regroup. I was wondering, I am in NC and I paid the $54 dollars to the board of nursing, to retest, but will I need another ATT to schedule a new test date. My last ATT is good intil 11/5/08. Just confused about this. I am glad you passes. Was the Kaplan online complete expensive?

good job. how many sata questions did you get?

Thanks for the post. I am also doing Kaplan and feel better knowing it helped you...congrats....

congrats amber07, all your hard work has paid off!!!!:D

Yes you will need another ATT which pearson will send you once you register again with them. I believe the Kaplan online with Qbank was a little over $400. For me that money was worth it as I needed a program and some set guidelines to stick to and guage myself on. Best of luck on your next test. Don't give up....this can be done!!!

I had 30 SATA and one question where you had to put things from one box into the correct order in the other box. Sorry...don't remember what those are referred to as. I also had one math question.

CONGRATULATIONS

I have a few questions. I take my test July 9 thinking about rescheduling it. I have been doing Kaplan online. I am not doing well with the QT's and it is upsetting me. I am also doing qbanks and not doing well with those either. I faxed kaplan and Barbara Irwin called me the other day. So I am thinking about postponing it for a week later. I already cancelled my July 4th trip.

Did you do well on all the QT how many questions a day did you do a day? I have less than 2 weeks but I have not been able to do all the QT yet. I plan on doing more bank questions and do the tests sometime during these last 2 weeks. What do u suggest?

I can't tell you what to do about scheduling as that really is a personal choice. I would recommend that you go in with some confidence though as not going into panic mode is one thing I believe helped me pass. My first test was horrible. Near the end I was sweating, dizzy and felt nauseas. However, you also have to realize that you will probably never feel completely ready or comftorable.

I usually always got about 60% on my Qbank tests. Sometimes better and only twice below at 58%. I read every single rationale which I also believe was very beneficial. I think I learned more from those then the test. My goal was to take 150 questions a day. After each 50 question test I would reread through and check all the rationales. My trainer scores were decent. QT4 - 61%, QT5 - 68%, QT6 - 74% and QT7 - 66%. When I was weak in an area I would review it a little bit. Not too much though as the rationales usually helped me know what I needed and was missing. I know several people who were only scoring in the 50% and they passed. I think it is important that you see improvement and understand why you got the ones wrong that you did. Also focus on getting more right then wrong. I wish you the best of luck and will keep you in my thoughts. Just remember this can be done and you will slay the NCLEX dragon.
