Orange County NY Nurses

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the words of encouragment...I am going to go for it.

Are there any orange county nurses out there? I was wondering what the salary range is for a nurse at Arden, Horton or St. Luke's with a bsn or as? Is there a big difference or is it better to get an as and then finish bsn while working? Any input would be appreciated.

I work at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. The hospital there is unionized (Local 1199) and the salary is based on years of experience. Some places give a little more per hour for a BSN over an ADN. Although I am an ADN, there are advantages to having a BSN.....it makes you a bit more flexible if you are eventually looking to go into a management position later on down the road.

New grads are looking at about 40-45/yr if I am not mistaken. Keep in mind that Arden Hill is supposedly merging with Horton (Orange regional Med Center) sometime in the future and that St. Luke's is affiliated with Cornwall and is also located in a very bad part of town. I can also tell you that St. Luke's is going through cut backs...due to what I don't know but right now the job security there is a tad unstable, according to some of my other nursing friends.

Whether or not you go straight for your BSN or not is entirely up to you and what your goals for the furture are. I hope that this helps you out.

I work at Horton Hospital in Middletown New York. The pay is EXCELLANT,benefits GREAT and we are 1199 union. I believe as of July 1st of this year new graduates will start at $58,000 that does not include shift differential. also you only have to work .7 to get FULL benefits and the benefits are good. I cannot complain,love it there! I've worked at WORSE hospitals and by far this has been the best and I am really happy working there!

OH! I know where that is! I see ads all the time! What is the pay like for a more experienced nurse? What are the problems in the facility? The usual? Are you working short? What is the ratio nurse to patient?

Thanks. Good to know incase the current job doesn't pan out. I am currently in LTC as a unit manager...but I have worked Med/Surg & Oncology...a little of a few other things too.

Being originally from the area, and previously working in Newburgh (St.Luke's), I wouldn't work there -- solely because of the extremely high crime rate and likelihood that the crime could hit you!

Wow, you guys are bringing back a lot of memories for me of the area. I grew up in New Paltz! Is the crime in Newburgh that bad now? I have been out of NY for 13 years!

Newburgh is not the best place to be at night. I must say though that not all of Newburgh is bad. Someone posted that they would not work at Horton because of the crime, but Horton is over the bridge in Middletown. Not the best neighborhood but not the worst either. St. Luke's I hear is in a really bad neighborhood. They are trying to clean up Newburgh of the drug dealers and gangs but that will not happen overnight.

That's too bad about all of the drugs. I can't remember what it was like in 87. I used to hang out a lot in Poughkeepsie and I've heard that its' pretty bad there. Do you remember a DJ on K104 by the name of Tony Hawkins? I have my real estate license here in NC and I met him. He works as a realtor here.
