online nursing programs that don't require you to be a RN

Hello, I am thinking of pursuing online schooling to get my BSN and wanted to know if there are any programs for people who are not already an RN or CNA. I do not have any type of training in this field already. I only have a BS in public health. Do online programs for people who don't have any prior training exist? Thanks.

i do not think so. i don't even think there is an online lpn program.

have you looked at accelerated bsn (absn) programs in your area since you already have a bs degree?

There are several programs out there that are ABSNs that are partially online. There's one in Wisconsin, and Nevada that I'm aware of. I'm sorry I don't remember their names but the information is located on the BON websites. Clinicals "of course" are located locally, but the theory portions are done online. Good Luck in your search.

Do you know the names of the colleges in Wisconsin or Nevada that you mentioned? Specific names of these colleges so I can look them up online?

I am an MA but I would like to be a nurse eventually. I know that there are LPN to RN programs out there (Excelsior, Indiana State University) but I do not have my LPN (I think all LPN schools are in person - not online).

I have a BA in Business and an MBA so I would like to find out about classes online.

Thank you!

Do you know of any LPN degrees that I can do most of the studying onine? Thanks! I understand that I may have to do clinicals locally. Thanks.

I haven't heard of any LVN programs that are online. As I stated before I don't remember the names of the ABSN programs in Wisconsin & Nevada. You would have to do some leg work and check their BON websites for that information. I remember reading about them on the websites but can't remember the names. Good Luck

Thanks for the information about U Wisconsin at Osk Kosh. Sounds like a full time job - literally - the information online states that online students are required to state in writing that they will forgo employment during the time that they go through the year long program. Tough!

thanks for the advice. Can you please explain what is ABSN and also what BON website are you referring to?

The ABSN is an accelerated program for those who already hold a bachelors degree in another field. The BON websites are the ones that I metioned above, Nevada & Wisconsin. Good Luck

You can do the non-clinical classes by applying to an online school, doing two years, then transferring to a local school for your clinicals.

Say you applied to an online school in a degree like Biology. Or, sometimes there is a degree called Health Sciences. You could take all the non-clinical classes online: Basic Bio, Anatomy and Physiology, Chem, Sociology, Psychology and maybe Statistics or Microbiology.

You could probably take all these courses online, along with your Gen-Eds, if you don't already have a Bachelor's. Then, you could apply for transfer to a local school for nursing, and just do the clinical courses to get your BSN.

If schools could do Nursing completely online, they would, but there is no way around it eventually you have go through clinicals and that requires actually attending a physical school at some point. The completly online schools I know of are all bridge programs; paramedic to RN, CNA to LPN, LPN to RN, and ADN to BSN.

Clinical porftion of course needs to be in person. There is no way around it, but having a theory completely online makes sense as long as students go to campus for skills lab & go to clinical rotations. There needs to be more LVN-RN online. It's mostly geared towards RN-BSN.
