OB Project Help!

I am stumped on a project idea for my OB clinical. It can be on anything ante, intra or postpartum, or newborn. Was thinking of doing importance of breastfeeding, but feel a lot of other people will do that too, and I would like to be more creative but I can't think of anything! We have to find three research articles based on the topic, and have videos/posters/etc to present to the class. Anyone do this project? What did you do? Thanks for any and all ideas!

I did a breastfeeding planner,so day by day the mother could see how the poop changes, the aniticpate number of soiled diapers, number of feeds along with infant development (anticipatory teaching about growth spurts to increase breastfeeding compliance). You can find tons of articles correlating education to continued breastfeeding.

What about a project related to birthing/labor positions? Like squatting, birthing ball, side-lying, etc. I found a great article from an obgyn nursing journal that had descriptions and pictures of different positions and what they helped with (cervical dilation, baby moving into pelvis, relief of back pain, relaxation, etc.). I am sure you could find several related research articles and you could have a very interesting poster if you used pictures of the positions!

Maybe something relating to the importance of prenatal care? Homebirth vs. Hospital birth, the role of a midwife or maybe natural vs. medication.

Avoid breastfeeding and premature babies as those are probably the main topics people will do.

You could do something related to teenage mothers, drugs, or death of a baby (I saw great info about new program where, when baby dies, Nurse takes pictures, lock of hair, foot prints (small scrapbook of sorts), parents hold baby for as long as they want, etc. Most parents take the "momentos" home with them after everything is said and done, and the ones that felt they just could not bear to have pictures of their baby that did not survive, came back and were so glad it was done and saved for them. Can't remember what name of program is or where I found it, but obviously a good idea that is not done for all newborn/preterm delivered deaths. When I had things to do like this is school I would google the topic + example, to find ideas. Also, go through your book. An idea will come to you.

How about evidence for/against VBAC?

Pros and cons of advanced maternal age

cultural beliefs about birth

In my nutrition class (a pre-req for the nursing program), I read some statistics about weight and obesity in America. Apparently, a number of childbearing-aged women are overweight and there are some interesting studies about how this relates to pregnancy.

In short, the gist of the articles I read basically stated that one should not loose weight after becoming pregnant, and therefore, women who were already overweight upon conceiving were more likely to give birth past their due dates and to bigger babies. This, in turn, made it more difficult to give birth lady partslly and required, overall, more medical intervention. Of course, there are a host of other medical complications as well.

I just googled this article, if you're interested in getting a few more details:

overweight & pregnant | Pregnancy Information, Pregnancy Calendar Week by Week, Tools at Fit Pregnancy

Personally, I think this is timely and something unique to focus on, but whatever you choose, best of luck with your project!

Post when you decide what you're going to do!

My hospital has been doing a memories programme for stillbirths for well over a decade. Our hospital volunteers provide a handmade layette for the babes to wear.

We don't advertise it, just do it.

This was my topic in nursing school. We only had 6 options and the others were so overdone. I thought it was an interesting topic, very sad though.

Thank you so much everyone for all your help!! I've def got some ideas now :)

a hot topic right now is female circumcision, there some great articles out there that explain the different types, how to deal with this issue, etc.

Also, male circumcision, the new information, why it's not necessary, etc.

Breastfeeding: As a lactation consultant, I have to tell you, we always need more info, you could do "new research"

Baby friendly hospitals: This should be the goal of all hospitals, check out babyfriendlyusa.org. I use wrote a big paper for my masters program, there are ten steps, this works out nicely for any project.

Cultural awareness: In general, how does each culture look at pregnancy, birth, postpartum: customs, how they celebrate, things like baptisms, blessingways, etc.

Homebirths: I'm a homebirth midwives, so I always like and appreciate students who actually look up the research and give the facts about homebirth and present it.

epidurals: The truth, the real risks, etc. so that people can make true informed consent about it.

Kangaroo care

Good luck! I'm working on my masters practicum project and also looking for ideas, I have to develop and present curriculum and want to do something in the ob field. It's turning out to be harder than I thought, it's 60 hours at least!
