At my school 50 out of 100 nursing students failed thier first semester. They didnt make it. Geeze is nursing school that hard. I get really good grades but is it really that hard? These students must not be that dedicated. IL college...

The reasons for failure in nursing school are as individual as each student. I think it is overly-simplistic to assume that every failing student lacks dedication.
Check into the history of this college. It is quite interesting.

I'm in an LPN program and our 1st semester fail rate was also 50%, 2nd semester is 50% as well!:uhoh21:
In my med-surg class we had a 14 out of 41 passing up until 3 weeks ago, now 18 out of 40 are passing...scary!!

that scares me as well, but maybe it has to do with these students just didn't study. sometimes you can "get by" before entering the program and then once in think you can just get by again. i plan on studying my butt off!!

Those sound like awfully high numbers, but I don't think you can chalk it up to just one attribute among them...we had a number of students who we lost the first semester (about 25%) and it was any number of reasons....
We're nearing the end of the second semester (already?!?!?), and haven't lost a soul, but still have 3 more tests, a HESI, and a final to get through...I'd hate to think that anyone will be leaving us....except the ones going for maternity reasons...

The nursing program where I used to live had a reputation for a high failure rate. It matched their reputation for an almost perfect (if not perfect) pass rate for the NCLEX. One of the reasons why I didn't go there. I just did not want to put time, effort, and money into such an important endeavor where the deck is stacked and that fact is public knowledge.

I think it is overly simplistic to just say, "well...they must not have studied enough."
There are tons of ways to fail nursing school. And they don't all involve academic problems. Harsh clinical instructors, stress, financial problems...just to name a few. And the exam style in nursing school is completely different than in pre-reqs. Some people are slower to adapt to the testing style than others are - I think they probably end up getting weeded out the earliest, obviously.

You have to take into consideration how selective the school was. I mean, if you're dedicated, and really want to be an RN for the right reasons, and maintain your grades, you'll be a nurse. The people who aren't totally dedicated are usually the ones who drop out (unless it's for other personal reasons or something), or the people who slack off on studying.
If you're really dedicated and your grades have been pretty good so far, it'll be a tough stretch, but you'll make it. Just make sure you're in nursing for the right reasons, rather than "it sounded like it'd be more fun than being a teacher" or something.. :

1st semester is the roughest. You have to learn how the tests are constructed, how to answer the questions, and then how to apply said knowledge to clinicals. We started with 70 students, ended with 38. The fact is, too many people start off with the wrong attitude and when they fix it, it's too late.
In our school I think the poop's gonna hit the fan in our med-surg classes. Not only will the material be tougher, but our clinicals should be more "real". So far our clinicals have been maybe a baby step above a CNA course. Or that's what it feels like. I mean, it's halfway through 2nd semester and someone today was just giving their first IM injection. So far our clinicals have been 95% observe. When we get to the tough info and real hands on stuff, I don't think some people from my class are gonna cut it becuase I don't think some of them knew what they were getting into. I say at least 1/3 of my class is gone by the time we graduate, and that's being optimistic I think. But hey, maybe I'm pesimistic.. haha
But seriously...

A student asked how many people didn't make it through the fundamentals class before us and the instructor said 20! There were about sixty to start out with. It's scary, but on the bright side, at least more people passed than failed. I'll feel a LOT better after I take my first test next week. (if I pass it, that is!)
