Nursing student

Greetings to all.

My name is Scott and I just wanted to take the time and say hello to everyone. I am a nursing student studying to get my LPN. I am already a CNA and I just wanted to go up from the bottom up. This way when I have my MSN I'll be able to relate to everyone because I will have been through it all. I"m a very curious person and I like to ask questions so if anyone is willing to answer, let me thank you in advance.

I have heard horror stories about the treatment of male nurses but like I said I heard. I have thick skin and being that my mother is not only a nurse (20+ years), but she is also retired from the Army (20+ years), so I can handle anything.

Hi, just a word of encouragement from a pre-nursing student. I was a patient and had the BEST male nurse taking care of me after my thyroidectomy 2 years ago in the PACU. BTW, we are also military, and I had the operation in military hospital. I had a male midwife delivering my second child.....you will be great because you care. Study hard, be the best!!!!! Study hard and learn all you can. With you patients be empathetic, caring, professional, personable, and treat them like you'd want to be treated if it were you in the bed. Always try to maintain a state of calm and cool on the job, everybody has a bad but work with your co-workers and you will get through the day, there is always another shift that follows you so it will get done. Good luck with school and if you ever need any help or advice I have been a nurse over 20 yrs and love to work/mentor students and new nurses, so feel free to drop me a personal message...flaerman :)

Scott do you know of any Online pre-nursing programs that are acredited etc? Or do you know of anyone that would? Thanks, Scott

Welcome to the world of Male nursing...

I also worked my way up through the ranks...starting as a nursing home CNA, then Psychiatric Tech, then nursing home LPN, and now Surgical Unit RN.

I have not had any issues with how I've been treated as a "Male" nurse, and working in the same hospital as an RN that I worked as a CNA has helped tremendously. My co-workers give me added respect because of my past experience as a CNA and I am not uncomfortable when I get primary care and have to complete all ADL's along with med administration etc.

By saying, "we are also military", is your husband in the Army Nurse Corps at BAMC [FSH, TX]? I read your Bio & saw your into physical fitness. The Jimmy Brought Fitness Center at FSH is an excellent place to workout! My wife & I have used the facility several times. If I was active duty at BAMC [may be starting in June '06] I'd cancel my Golds Gym membership for sure. I'm with the 5501st USAH, USAR, and live about 65 miles north of FSH.

Being a Male RN has its pros & cons. However, I've never regretted for one minute the decision to start a second career in nursing. Have you considered the Army Nurse Corps, either Active, or Reserve Component? IMHO, seems the Male RNs [and RNs in general] get more respect in the Army Nurse Corps, than in civilian sector.

Hi Corvetteguy, My husband is with the 5th Army Emergency Operations Center at Fort Sam. He was a tanker (M1A1) and we have been in SA for 2/12 years. Be bought a house in North East SA and plan to retire here. When time permits I meet my husband during lunch and we work out together at Jimmy Brought. The hurricanes have put our lunchdates on halt for now, but we will resume it when things slow down. It is a very nice facility, but I also have a membership at Bally's Total Fitness.....so there are no excuses I love weight training, and it has kept me in good shape. I also do cardio every day for at least 30 minutes. between March 2003 and April 2004 I had 5 surgeries at BAMC, three major. The docs and nurses, male and female alike (in uniform) were all excellent! My OB team was from Wilford Hall and great!!!!

I will be 46 tomorrow and I feel wonderful thanks to the great care I received.

I am starting a second life, I want to become a nurse....I just need to survive my A&P class which I am taking at SAC.

Maybe I see you and your wife at Jimmy Brought sometime, wouldn't that be cool?

If, I'm accepted to the Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia Nursing [June '06] the odds of meeting at the JB Fitness Center will be increased, greatly. BTW, sounds like we are all in the same age group. Not getting older, just wiser... like a good bottle of wine just keep getting better with age.

I have a tough professor at SAC....so far I have the highest grade, but he is old and forgetful and makes things frustrating, but I will hang in and make a competitive grade. (It will take a miracle :uhoh21: ) I plan to apply at UTHealth Science Center for BSN, I have completed 40 credit hrs or the 62 required prereqs. I'd like to become a PACU nurse. I find Anesthesia very interesting. It's amazing what happens to our bodies during and (after :uhoh21: 0.... how all systems shut down, and then start back up :) tc) I would love to be there for people who have to go through it!

BTW, my husband drives the 'poor people' corvette...TransAm firebird RamAir?(sorry but I am not so good with that terminology) We visited the Corvette factory in Bowling Green KY while we were stationed in Ft.Knox. If I ever get money I'll get the blue convertible corvette with shiny wheels..... dreams... first I have to look up 'reticuloendothelial system' online, it's not in our book, the instructor doesn't tell us about it and WILL have questions about it on the test because it is in his syllabus...he did something similar to us on the first test...I am getting smarter and will outtrick him this time :rotfl:
