please vote--change career mid life?
Breathe easy. I left a management position at VISA and I haven't felt more free. I really believe I can fly. Money isn't everything, family is.

Does it matter as long as people recieve good healthcare? When you started, years ago, times were different in this country. Now people switch careers like changing clothes. Instead of looking at the negative, look at it this way. The person changing careers for the money in nursing may become one of the best nurses you have ever seen. This may have just been someones true calling, I know it's mine. Years at a job don't always have you good at a job. Look at George Bush.

I agree with you. I don't think because right out of high school you pick up nursing you are ready for it. If that was the case you wouldn't have so many nurses leaving the profession and starting new ones like everyone else is doing. Not to mention all the students dropping out of school once they really see what nursing is all about. I think it takes a lot of guts to change careers and start up a new one wether its nursing or whatever. Nursing just happens to pay good and has great job security. Isn't that why most people scout out jobs? I am 37 year old man and I would of never even thought of even being a CNA let alone a nurse! I think that you grow into who you are and if a rocket scientist wants to be a nurse, bless him/her.

Date MD's??
I'm a male CNA going to LPN school and some of the female doctors hit on me. I laugh it off but some are serious about it. I don't think its a good idea to "bleep" and eat in the same place. Although I am flattered, not all men want sex and not all of us cheat. Let me say this: "If I cannot talk to a woman I don't not want to sleep with her." That goes for docs, nurses, lpn's, cna's, security guards, etc.

What is ur average 2 week take home pay?
LIZZ wrote: You should come out to California. There is a TON of money for minority nursing students. If I had to guess, at least a quarter to one half of the scholarships in the state list minorities as a preference criteria. For one thing, the state board of nursing gives high dollar scholarship awards (starting at $8K to $10K) with preference for minorities, especially if they speak another language. I too didn't qualify for financial aide, and applied for many scholarships which, I didn't get and not being a minority was one of the reasons. Still, most of my nursing school expenses have been paid for through scholarships I got through my nursing program, mostly due to good grades. Of all of the scholarships I applied for, the local school scholarship drive was the most productive as far as actually getting results. Also, the county had this work program which reimbursed nursing students for most of their expenses. You weren't eligible for it during the first year, but it pretty much paid for everything during the last year of school. Maybe the problem is that you're not in nursing school yet because, once you are officially a nursing student, there is money out there ... whether you're a minority or not.

First off I am a minority and I didn't get any aid either. I was told my wife and I make to much money which is a joke. Second, I have not recieved any scholarships either. Don't say minorities get all the breaks because you didn't get any. Don't use that that tired, dead, weak, past due excuse that so many have used to justify unfair treatment to many who did not and who do not desevre it. The money and rules are tight for everyone. If you look at nursing as a whole there are way more non-minorities in positions. Isn't it time that we offer training to those who may be want a chance that happen to be of a different backround? I rmember when women were fighting for equal bill and they still are. We need people who want and can do the job, if it happens to be a minority then so be it, AS LONG AS THEY CAN DO THE JOB!

I just want to say this. I am a male who starts his LPN training on July 11. I plan on going straight to RN training right after I'm done. I've been a CNA for over 4 years. There are 35 students in my class and I am the only male. I don't want this to sound wrong but do all Nurses attack each other like this? I am not saying this in an evil, but humorous tone. I mean I am enjoying reading this. It's 3:50 am and I cannot stop reading this, its funny! Whatever career field a person goes into they are going to see what type of money they are going to make before they start training, wouldn't that be wise? I mean who wants to go to school for 3-4 years and get stellar grades and find out after they gaduate they're only making 10.50 hr? I am sure we all love nursing and helping people but life is more than that. There's an old saying that goes, "Love don't pay bills." I love the medical field and I love working for/with women especially ones who can teach me about the job and about life without the EGO. Let's respect each other out here because we are all we have.

Percent of men in class?
Mat, Sorry it took so long to respond, but I have been really busy with school. I have heard a lot about Brenau from a bunch of people and I always feel that when I hear something more than twice form different people it's a sign. I am going to try and get as much info as I possibly can about Brenau. Thanks alot, Scott

I read your post and I live in Atlanta. Can you forward me some info on the school your attending? I am still doing my pre-rec's but I should be in the LPN program in the spring of 06. I just want to weight my options once I'm finished. Besides maybe you can give me some help along the way. PM me. By the way, my name is Scott.

Percent of men in class?
In my classes I have been the only male in one and there was 3 of us in another. I had so much fun in the class with the women to a point the teacher would pick with me to get it started. I learned alot from them and they me. Don't worry about the women, some will be cool others won't. If a guy has a problem with your sexual choice then thats his problem. I am secure in my manhood and by the way, who am I to judge anybody? Just be yourself and be open to anything that comes your way. Scott

Nursing student
Greetings to all. My name is Scott and I just wanted to take the time and say hello to everyone. I am a nursing student studying to get my LPN. I am already a CNA and I just wanted to go up from the bottom up. This way when I have my MSN I'll be able to relate to everyone because I will have been through it all. I"m a very curious person and I like to ask questions so if anyone is willing to answer, let me thank you in advance. I have heard horror stories about the treatment of male nurses but like I said I heard. I have thick skin and being that my mother is not only a nurse (20+ years), but she is also retired from the Army (20+ years), so I can handle anything. Thanks for listening and I look forward to making new friends. Scott
