Nurses Capes

Hello all! My class graduates in a couple of months and a few of us thought it would be nice if we could all have matching capes to wear to our pinning ceremony:yeah:. I was wondering if any one knew of a good pattern or of where I could get one for sewing a cape. I have looked for patterns but I haven't found any that seem to match what I was looking for so I was hoping that maybe someone here has made them or knows of a good resource.

My class was the first to NOT get capes. They changed to plug ugly wool gabardine coats with itchy linings. I got my cape on e-bay for about $20. I've never worn it out of the house but I do have a cape.

Have you checked the pattern books at Joannes' or other fabric stores? Caps you can order from Kays Caps.

Cos I lived in Nurses residence when I was training I was given a full cape and still have it :)

I would recommend trying some of the fabric shops that have patterns and see what they can offer or help with

This is a charming idea. I don't know where you'll find capes or patterns, but I'm delighted to hear that you're looking.

Yes, in practice we must be practical in our dress. But practical does not have to mean patterned scrubs and crocs.

Thanks! My class is looking to do something special. So many graduate from my school each year and the entire group of students that I will be graduating with are really close.

I'm sorry you didn't get your cape! My great aunt was a nurse and I remember hers so well. When she passed away it was stored somewhere and my family doesn't know where :cry:. I will have to check out Kays Caps. Thanks for the lead!

I think it's a great idea if your class is small enough that everyone can agree on it. Oh yeah, and I'm assuming all female. . . you wouldn't do that to the guys, would you??:roll:roll:roll

I wonder what fabric they are. Maybe someone knows. I always thought they were navy blue wool with a lining. Kinda like a P-coat, for warmth.

I graduated in the era of hideous white spongey polyester dresses and white stockings. Not thinking ANY nursing class of the future will want to wear those:no::no::no::barf01::barf01:

Although I'm as big a fan of nursing tradition as anyone, the capes were outerwear (yes, heavy wool with a satin lining), intended to provide protection from the weather, so, really, it wouldn't be any more appropriate to wear them for your pinning ceremony (I assume the ceremony is being held indoors, yes?) than it would be for everyone to wear raincoats throughout the ceremony.

For our nursing pinning ceremony all the gals wore white nursing dresses, nursing hats, and carried a single red rose. The guys wore white pants, shirt, and tie. As we walked the aisle to head for the stage we were handed a small Holy Bible. After we were all pinned we all lit candles on the stage with the lights dimmed and repeated a nursing oath (which i don't remember the words...). All this hoop-la was about 10 years ago. The following graduating classes did the same. I did hear that the past two graduating classes refused the white dress and cap. Times must have changed. All I can say the way it was done for my graduating class was memorable and traditional.

Ugh! Yes that could be horrible. When I graduated the only guy in my class, the women wanted to carry roses. And they wanted to wear caps. I didn't rain on their parade, but it was uncomfortable. Just glad I graduated!:yeah:
