Nurse Practice Act

so im writing a paper for my last nursing class (graduation is in 3 weeks) i have to write a paper on the nurse practice act.. which i found the nurse practice act for my state (Virginia) but its like 500+ pages and im having a really hard time finding what i need to find and i was hoping someone could point me to where i may be able to find some information.. its like i know the information but now i need a reliable source in order to use it in my APA paper...

here are some examples of the question i have to answer in the paper j

what can the CNA do with the supervision of the Nurse

What can a LPN and RN do without a MD order

What is the Role of a LPN and RN in long term care

What is the scope of practice of a LPN compared to a RN

what is the scope of practice of a RN

i was wondering if there is maybe a book, nursing journal, or some other forum that i can get this information from..

While it may seem an arduous task, it would actually behoove you to read that whole nurse practice act from beginning to end. Knowing your state's practice act helps ensure that you won't have issues with your license down the line for not following it- ignorance of a law isn't an excuse for breaking it. Especially since you are only 3 weeks from graduation and starting to look for your first job.

You have the source you need to find all that information- it's written in the NPA.

There should be an online index for these things. If you find it referenced in other places you can always look it up in the source. Important to know either way.

Yeah, i agree reading through it would probably benefit you in the long run. However, sometimes you can use a Control-F function to find things within a document if it's in word.

Another thing you could do is really get to know the index of your states NPA. All of the information (like some others have said) is in there, you just need to find it.

One more thing I could suggest is to separately look up each scope in your state, sometimes that will bring you to a specific area of the NPA or an excerpt that might make it easier for you.

Good luck with everything!

There is a reason you got this assignment just before graduation, and that reason was to make sure you could find your way around your state's nurse practice act...not that you could find your way to AN and ask us to tell you shortcuts. YOU have to fulfill the purpose of the assignment. Read the NPA online and use the search function.

Although many state NPAs do rely heavily on the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (a slim and inexpensive volume, available on Amazon and at the ANA website, and applies to all RNs regardless of state of licensure), since they are asking you about YOUR NPA, a generic book otherwise will not be helpful to you.

I promise you that the knowledge you will gain will be useful to you long, long after your nursing school has disappeared from your rear-view mirror.

use the website's serach engine to find the key words.Hint: In the Texas NPA there isa paragraph on what can NOT be delegated to the unlicensed person (CNA). I take it to be like a mini job description for the nurse. If the UAP cannot do it, then it must be my job
