No Job!

Hi-

I am so discouraged. I grad in June, NCLEX in Aug. I am having trouble finding a job. I really want to work in an assisted living(brand new)...went for one interview and was called back for a second interview 3 weeks later...and was told they would be making a decision in 2 weeks. I feel like my life is on hold!

I also went for an interview at a nsg home and told the administrator that I couldn't work weekends and he basically told me that only desperate facilities would hire someone who couldn't work weekends and they were not a desperate facility!

Before becoming an LPN I was a mammographer and I decided that I really needed to do more than sit home, so I went back per diem...I feel like I went to LPN school for nothing. I am making more money as a mammo tech and can basically pick and choose my hours!

I am so frustrated!!!

Are you serious:angryfire I really thought every school had a placement program...what school did you go to if you dont mind me asking?

I have heard that goining in to places & asking to speak with someone is the best

I went to Tri County Vocational School in Massachusetts--first year of the program...the director was awful!! Totally unorganized...she left (thankfully for the new class).

I am really really sorry about that!!! It may be worth calling back now that there is a new director & see if she could recommend anything. I am really sorry you had to go throught that!

If you are a new graduate with no LPN experience, it is best if you show up at facilities in person and submit applications during daytime hours when a DON or ADON will be there to speak to you. Also, many places don't advertise that they are hiring. My current workplace was not advertising for nurses, but I walked in, applied in person, got an interview on the spot, and was hired.

Yes! TheCommuter is right. I was guided to a place from a former coworker whose parents were residents there. She felt the care was excellent and the place was great. I walked in and asked to fill out an application and was hired pending background check, drug test, etc. Been there a year this month.

Unfortunately, it may be hard to get a position as a new grad without working weekends, unless you want to work in a clinic, and even those are starting to have weekends to allow better access for the public. I worked in a clinic at a hospital that paid my way to become an LPN...in fact, I was on a paid leave of absence and they also paid my tuition. I really expected to have to work on the floors where I would be working every other weekend, but I was surprized to find that when I got my license, they told me that I would be returning to the same clinic area I worked, but as a nurse. I have to admit that this was because I knew people in high places that liked me. Funny, I DID NOT try to pull strings or expect favors (sometimes, you live to regret that later)...they gave it to me....but this was because I knew someone. I guess that I am trying to say that in most cases, new grads get the harder assignments that no one wants...and the more senior nurses usually get more weekends and holidays off. Have you considered agencies?

I know exactly how you feel!! I have graduated from my school in Pa in June 2005 and have been working with the same nursing home since July of 2005, problem....they still have not given me a full time job!! Instead they cut staff left and right. I have been on many interviews and everyone wants either an Rn or an LPN with like ten years experience. It is very frustrating. I wish i would have just got my RN degree. I am waiting on a reply from a job in a doctors office which, if you are looking for no weekends, that would be your best bet! I am a single mom and weekends and holidays are hard to work around. So I wish you the best of luck finding a job!!!

Same here... no job graduated in july 2006.... and I will work weekends 1st or 3rd shift... I have been personally to nursing homes and been told... "Honey, you won't last 30 days here" or other don's interviewing me have been extremely rude at interviews... saying things like " How do you feel about having 25 plus pts. on you." She started out the interview by saying " sorry I dragged you back over here". I couldn't get 2 words in as she continued with her derogatory comments. I am feed up and have decided next interview if they come at me like that I'm going to buck back at them. Atleast to let them know I am not weak or whatever the issue is with me... I have been told so many times that nurses eat their young... I'm 41 (not so young anymore). I do deserve respect ... and a JOB.

I do wish you the best of luck!! I would not put up with that telling you that you won't last thirty days. How do they know if you are not given the chance. I would lookk for facilities that welcome new grads. As far as handling 26 patients, you will get your routine down. When I first started, I thought to myself how the hell am I going to do this?? My first med pass by myself, I think I didnt get done with my morning meds until about 1130. Than had to go back out again for afternoon and finish treatments and charting. I thought it was horrible. But after while I got my own routine down, started to know the residents and their meds it wasnt so bad!! I still have my bad days but that comes with every job. I would go into your next interview with nothing but confidence and tell them that you can handle it and it may take some time but that you are a fast learner and know you can be a good canidate for whatever facility you work for. Dont let them bring you down!!!!

As far as other nurses eating you alive, I dont really have that problem. At my facility, the other nurses were and still are great!! You always will have that one, but I just blow it off. My Rn supervisor will go out of her way to teach me something new and explain things to me. She is definitly very tough and is an excellent nurse but treats all of the LPNs with respect! They took me right in are never agitated when I need to ask them a question. They call me there "little Italian nurse". So you just have to find the right place and you will eventually!!

I am looking for another job because the company that owns the facility will not hire me full time because of budget purposes, which is ridicolous!!!! On my days off they call me and I have stopped going in because if they cant give me a full time job than I am not going to bend over backwards anymore!! Well enough of me going on and on.....good luck!!!
