Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. I would do ALMOST anything for my patients, but this was my conversation tonight.
Mr. Doe, I am leaving soon. Do you need anything else before I go home?
Yeah, I need to pee.
OK, no problem, I hand him the urinal and tell him I will leave to give him privacy. Asked him to call when he was done. This is where it gets weird.
Mr. Doe "No, you can't go. You need to help pull it out of my pants and put it in there."
Me "Mr. Doe, you have been using your hands all night to feed yourself. You were living at home taking care of yourself until yesterday. Who did this for you at home before you left and who will do it for you when you go home?"
Mr. Doe "I can do it when I am at home. But here I need you girls to help. Now, put your gloves on and get over here."
Me "Tell ya what, Mr. Doe, I am not going to do this for you. However, if you really need help, I will send the night nurse in to help. Jack will be down in a minute, K?"
We were all shocked when Mr. Doe had managed to use the urinal all by himself by the time Jack made it down the hallway. Really, did he think I was completely naive? Been a nurse for a long time and a woman even longer.

If all of the guys who want it 'handled' realized how poorly they measure up in the grand scheme of things, their egos would shrivel up in a heartbeat. THEN, if they realized we didn't see it as any different than having to giving an enema, they'd be really destroyed....
I wouldn't do it either...if their hands work, they can either get it where they want it, or get help changing their wet clothes.

or deal with the wet floor . . . because i've seen them do that to "make a statement."

i've had this happen to me a few times and i was 100% fine with throwing some towels down and getting the pee off the floor. i'm not an object of sexual gratification for some loser who wants his "joint" touched. i'm not talking about old men or the incapacitated...i'm talking about walkie/talkie dudes ranging from 20s-50s. i don't care if they pee on the floor or themselves. i don't care about the inconvenience of changing a bed or cleaning a floor. i'm not feeling on anyone's genitals male or female unless it's strictly medically necessary. when i was a very young cna i once walked into a young a+ox3 male pts room to collect his breakfast tray. i found him sitting in a chair (got himself into the chair btw...he had zero physical limitations) buck naked with a massive erection and he had the nerve to tell me that i needed to wash him. i told him that i didn't feed him that morning and that the same hands he used to feed himself with were the same ones he was going to use to wash himself. i left him sitting right in that chair, came back with shower supplies, pointed out the shower room and walked right out again.
stuff like this makes me feel violated and disgusted. what a perverted loser.

Always amazes me. When I'm at the doc, the last thing I want anybody in the place doing is touching me in places my swimsuit would cover, ya know? And the last thing I want to do at work is scrub a week's worth of dirt off of somebody's bottom when they're capable of looking after it themselves. My mantra is, "If you can reach it, you can wash it."
We had a woman who you could smell from the doorway. Wasn't a fungal infection, no sign of an STD, she just thought body odor was "sexy."
Not when it's making people gag it's not...

I learned this lesson the hard way.
When I was doing my very first clinical rotation, I was...shall we say a bit naive. Our focus that day was hygiene. My pt was a 33 yo male s/p lap appy POD#1. He was due to be d/c'd later in the afternoon.
So I walk in the room, all bright eyed and bushy tailed, excited to finally interact with a patient. I introduce myself and tell my pt that I am going to gather the supplies for his morning bath.
I walk in, proud of myself for not getting lost and start running some warm water into the basin. I place the basin on the bedside table and, remembering to always give the patient a choice (again, so proud of myself for my holistic mindset) ask him, "Do you want to do this yourself or would you like for me to do it for you?" He replies, "Oh, I want YOU to do it!"
Yeah, that was fodder for my classmates for the rest of the semester.

There is nothing new under the sun! Back in 1972, as a freshman in nursing school, in the days of complete bedrest for days and days after an MI, I had an elderly gent ask me to put some of the body lotion 'down there'. I politely refused. When we were allowed to assist him to a chair at the bedside, he patted my rear end as I made his bed. When I asked my instructor how to deal with this, she laughed!
These days, we would be telling these guys to keep their hands to themselves.

This is why I love working with nurses and cnas who are guys. Nothing like it when one of them goes in the room and says "did you need something?" 10 times out of 10, the perv doesn't need that help after all!!

This was just a topic of conversation at work yesterday. We had more than one male, AOx3, ambulatory pt on the floor who would just use the urinal until it was absolutely full and call, asking it for it to be dumped. Not even sure why they had a urinal in the first place, but lucky us, 2 of these gems were in the same room, so it was quite odoriffic in there. Someone dumped the urinals for them and then dumped the urinals in the trash. Meanwhile, I have an elderly pt who has a very unsteady gait and is weak (AOx3, though) who refuses to use a urinal, so we come running every 30 minutes when he has to pee. Ah, such fun, huh?

What a jerk. Don't let him get away with that crap. Tell him off!
