The new interns are coming July 1st and our unit along with another unit is going to have an ice cream bar to welcome them. We are also going to give goody bags. I thought about a card with helpful hints to make their life easier. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,

Where I worked, everybody used their seniority to ask for the first 2 weeks of July off. Our ER was a mess until the new residents could find their way around. Terribly cynical. In the perfect world I wish for, your idea sounds much better.

And July 1 this year is the Friday leading into 4th of July weekend ... Should be a blast ...
Seriously though -- we have a picnic as a meet & greet event.
And my dept. always double schedules nursing supervisors July 1-2 -- it's jokingly referred to as the show of force.

Here down under it is nit till the 3rd week of January.............the new grad nurses start on the wards on the 2nd week of January! EEK!!!And the registrars(2nd in command to the consultants) rotate on the last week of Jan!
Interesting! I never would have guessed that the newbies arrive mid summer in each hemisphere.

Being a new grad (started in September)... I am scared to deathhh of the new interns next month! Ahhhh! Co-workers are telling me that I will know more than half of them on what to do in situations... This is terrifying to me!!!

Don't worry, you'll be fine. I had a few rotations at teaching hospitals, and even as a 3rd and 4th semester student I knew more than some interns. Lots of book knowledge, but no idea how to interact with patients or what diseases actually LOOK like, or what to order. That's just my limited experience, there may be some great interns out there.

Ours are here:p
Last night I had to **suggest** that bolusing a liter of NS over an hour wasn't a good idea for a pt with a BP of 158/93---even if he was dehydrated.
And that perhaps Blood Cultures would be a good idea before we give that 103.4 pt some Tylenol.
However, I do love new grads and interns/residents. Most I work with have always been open to suggestions from nursing, have had a fresh optimistic attitude, and shown respect for other members of the team.
This is a common misconception! Tylenol (paracetomol) is an anti-pyretic. It will decrease a temperature but it will not kill bacteria. If the bugs are in the body paracetomol (tylenol) is NOT going to kill them.

I love it when the new residents come. I truly feel like I am watching an episode of Scrubs sometimes when they first come 'round. I think it's so great of you to do something nice for them. I bet they will remember this for a long time (:
